The New Politics of Sports Franchise Policy Innovation in Chicago
The urban regime in Chicago was an integral player in the determination of sports policy during the 1980s and early 1 990s. As the mediator of every major sports issue, the regime orchestrated the policy response in innovative ways. Regulatory powers were used to control night baseball in Wrigleyville, ultimately appeasing the team owners and most neighborhood residents. Economic development policies were adapted to keep the White Sox, but these were adopted with a major regulatory component and the progressive regime also wove a major social benefit into the redevelopment of the ballpark neighborhood. Although an accommodation to appease the football Bears has yet to be achieved, the regime has worked tirelessly to develop unique solutions. All of this represents a departure from the way in which the Democratic Party machine made policy for Chicago and demonstrates the effectiveness of a working progressive regime in Chicago in recent years
Social Media Platforms and Responsibility for Disinformation
Researchers are paying closer attention to the rise of disinformation on social media platforms and what responsibility, if any, the companies that control these platforms have for false information being spread on their websites. In this paper, we highlight the recent growth in concern regarding online disinformation, discuss other works regarding the use of social media as a tool for spreading disinformation, and discuss how coordinated disinformation campaigns on social media platforms are used to spread propaganda and lies about current political events. We also evaluate the reactions of social media platforms in combatting disinformation and the difficulty in policing it. Finally, we argue the point that governments should not have the power to regulate the content of social media platforms except in cases where said content is actively illegal or could be categorized as a type of speech that is not protected by the First Amendment
“It’s my dream to work with Olympic athletes”: Neophyte sport psychologists’ expectations and initial experiences regarding service delivery
We examined trainee practitioners' initial experiences of applied sport psychology practice. Semi-structured interviews (4) were conducted over 6 months with 7 full-time MSc students before, during, and after the applied sport psychology module, when they were working with clients. Participants also kept reflective diaries over an 8-week period whilst working with clients. Findings included: (a) motivations and expectations of an ASP practice career, (b) perceptions of service delivery, (c) emotional demands, and (d) pivotal experiences. Findings extend previous literature on the initial stages of practitioner development, providing micro-level detail on aspects of the intense development process during this pivotal perio
Generalising unit-refutation completeness and SLUR via nested input resolution
We introduce two hierarchies of clause-sets, SLUR_k and UC_k, based on the
classes SLUR (Single Lookahead Unit Refutation), introduced in 1995, and UC
(Unit refutation Complete), introduced in 1994.
The class SLUR, introduced in [Annexstein et al, 1995], is the class of
clause-sets for which unit-clause-propagation (denoted by r_1) detects
unsatisfiability, or where otherwise iterative assignment, avoiding obviously
false assignments by look-ahead, always yields a satisfying assignment. It is
natural to consider how to form a hierarchy based on SLUR. Such investigations
were started in [Cepek et al, 2012] and [Balyo et al, 2012]. We present what we
consider the "limit hierarchy" SLUR_k, based on generalising r_1 by r_k, that
is, using generalised unit-clause-propagation introduced in [Kullmann, 1999,
2004].
The class UC, studied in [Del Val, 1994], is the class of Unit refutation
Complete clause-sets, that is, those clause-sets for which unsatisfiability is
decidable by r_1 under any falsifying assignment. For unsatisfiable clause-sets
F, the minimum k such that r_k determines unsatisfiability of F is exactly the
"hardness" of F, as introduced in [Ku 99, 04]. For satisfiable F we use now an
extension mentioned in [Ansotegui et al, 2008]: The hardness is the minimum k
such that after application of any falsifying partial assignments, r_k
determines unsatisfiability. The class UC_k is given by the clause-sets which
have hardness <= k. We observe that UC_1 is exactly UC.
UC_k has a proof-theoretic character, due to the relations between hardness
and tree-resolution, while SLUR_k has an algorithmic character. The
correspondence between r_k and k-times nested input resolution (or tree
resolution using clause-space k+1) means that r_k has a dual nature: both
algorithmic and proof theoretic. This corresponds to a basic result of this

Diagnosis and treatment of disease demand a sound understanding of the underlying mechanisms, determining any Achilles' heel that can be targeted in effective therapies. Throughout history, this endeavour to decipher the origin and mechanism of transformation of a normal cell into cancer has led to various theories-from cancer as a curse to an understanding at the level of single-cell heterogeneity, meaning even among a single sub-type of cancer there are myriad molecular challenges to overcome. With increasing insight into cancer genetics and biology, the disease has become ever more complex to understand. The complexity of cancer as a disease was distilled into key traits by Hanahan and Weinberg in their seminal 'Hallmarks of Cancer' reviews. This lucid conceptualization of complex cancer biology is widely accepted and has helped advance cancer therapeutics by targeting the various hallmarks but, with the advancement in technologies, there is greater granularity in how we view cancer as a disease, and the additional understanding over the past decade requires us to revisit the hallmarks of cancer. Based on extensive study of the cancer research literature, we propose four novel hallmarks of cancer, namely, the ability of cells to regress from a specific specialized functional state, epigenetic changes that can affect gene expression, the role of microorganisms and neuronal signalling, to be included in the hallmark conceptualization along with evidence of various means to exploit them therapeutically
Abrupt transition to heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity in England and Wales, 1947–1957, associated with a pronounced increase in the geographical rate of disease propagation
The abrupt transition to heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity in England and Wales, 1947–1957, was associated with a profound change in the spatial dynamics of the disease. Drawing on the complete record of poliomyelitis notifications in England and Wales, we use a robust method of spatial epidemiological analysis (swash-backwash model) to evaluate the geographical rate of disease propagation in successive poliomyelitis seasons, 1940–1964. Comparisons with earlier and later time periods show that the period of heightened poliomyelitis epidemicity corresponded with a sudden and pronounced increase in the spatial rate of disease propagation. This change was observed for both urban and rural areas and points to an abrupt enhancement in the propensity for the geographical spread of polioviruses. Competing theories of the epidemic emergence of poliomyelitis in England and Wales should be assessed in the light of this evidence
