A New Light Higgs Boson and Short-Baseline Neutrino Anomalies
The low-energy excesses observed by the MiniBooNE experiment have, to date,
defied a convinc- ing explanation under the standard model even with
accommodation for non-zero neutrino mass. In this paper we explore a new
oscillation mechanism to explain these anomalies, invoking a light neu-
trinophilic Higgs boson, conceived to induce a low Dirac neutrino mass in
accord with experimental limits. Beam neutrinos forward-scattering off of a
locally over-dense relic neutrino background give rise to a novel matter-effect
with an energy-specific resonance. An enhanced oscillation around this
resonance peak produces flavor transitions which are highly consistent with the
MiniBooNE neutrino- and antineutrino-mode data sets. The model provides
substantially improved values beyond either the no-oscillation
hypothesis or the more commonly explored 3+1 sterile neutrino hy- pothesis.
This mechanism would introduce distinctive signatures at each baseline in the
upcoming SBN program at Fermilab, presenting opportunities for further
exploration.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR
Sex differences in exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in endurance-trained athletes
There is evidence that female athletes may be more susceptible to exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia and expiratory flow limitation and have greater increases in operational lung volumes during exercise relative to men. These pulmonary limitations may ultimately lead to greater levels of diaphragmatic fatigue in women. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there are sex differences in the prevalence and severity of exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in 38 healthy endurance-trained men (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 64.0 ± 1.9 ml·kg–1·min–1) and women (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 57.1 ± 1.5 ml·kg–1·min–1). Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was calculated as the difference between gastric and esophageal pressures. Inspiratory pressure-time products of the diaphragm and esophagus were calculated as the product of breathing frequency and the Pdi and esophageal pressure time integrals, respectively. Cervical magnetic stimulation was used to measure potentiated Pdi twitches (Pdi,tw) before and 10, 30, and 60 min after a constant-load cycling test performed at 90% of peak work rate until exhaustion. Diaphragm fatigue was considered present if there was a 15% reduction in Pdi,tw after exercise. Diaphragm fatigue occurred in 11 of 19 men (58%) and 8 of 19 women (42%). The percent drop in Pdi,tw at 10, 30, and 60 min after exercise in men (n = 11) was 30.6 ± 2.3, 20.7 ± 3.2, and 13.3 ± 4.5%, respectively, whereas results in women (n = 8) were 21.0 ± 2.1, 11.6 ± 2.9, and 9.7 ± 4.2%, respectively, with sex differences occurring at 10 and 30 min (P < 0.05). Men continued to have a reduced contribution of the diaphragm to total inspiratory force output (pressure-time product of the diaphragm/pressure-time product of the esophagus) during exercise, whereas diaphragmatic contribution in women changed very little over time. The findings from this study point to a female diaphragm that is more resistant to fatigue relative to their male counterparts
Construction and Assembly of the Wire Planes for the MicroBooNE Time Projection Chamber
In this paper we describe how the readout planes for the MicroBooNE Time
Projection Chamber were constructed, assembled and installed. We present the
individual wire preparation using semi-automatic winding machines and the
assembly of wire carrier boards. The details of the wire installation on the
detector frame and the tensioning of the wires are given. A strict quality
assurance plan ensured the integrity of the readout planes. The different tests
performed at all stages of construction and installation provided crucial
information to achieve the successful realisation of the MicroBooNE wire
planes.Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication as Technical Report in

Experiment Simulation Configurations Used in DUNE CDR
The LBNF/DUNE CDR describes the proposed physics program and experimental
design at the conceptual design phase. Volume 2, entitled The Physics Program
for DUNE at LBNF, outlines the scientific objectives and describes the physics
studies that the DUNE collaboration will perform to address these objectives.
The long-baseline physics sensitivity calculations presented in the DUNE CDR
rely upon simulation of the neutrino beam line, simulation of neutrino
interactions in the far detector, and a parameterized analysis of detector
performance and systematic uncertainty. The purpose of this posting is to
provide the results of these simulations to the community to facilitate
phenomenological studies of long-baseline oscillation at LBNF/DUNE.
Additionally, this posting includes GDML of the DUNE single-phase far detector
for use in simulations. DUNE welcomes those interested in performing this work
as members of the collaboration, but also recognizes the benefit of making
these configurations readily available to the wider community.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, configurations in ancillary file
A Method To Characterize Metalenses For Light Collection Applications
Metalenses and metasurfaces are promising emerging technologies that could
improve light collection in light collection detectors, concentrating light on
small area photodetectors such as silicon photomultipliers. Here we present a
detailed method to characterize metalenses to assess their efficiency at
concentrating monochromatic light coming from a wide range of incidence angles,
not taking into account their imaging quality
Analysis of a Large Sample of Neutrino-Induced Muons with the ArgoNeuT Detector
ArgoNeuT, or Argon Neutrino Test, is a 170 liter liquid argon time projection
chamber designed to collect neutrino interactions from the NuMI beam at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory. ArgoNeuT operated in the NuMI low-energy beam
line directly upstream of the MINOS Near Detector from September 2009 to
February 2010, during which thousands of neutrino and antineutrino events were
collected. The MINOS Near Detector was used to measure muons downstream of
ArgoNeuT. Though ArgoNeuT is primarily an R&D project, the data collected
provide a unique opportunity to measure neutrino cross sections in the 0.1-10
GeV energy range. Fully reconstructing the muon from these interactions is
imperative for these measurements. This paper focuses on the complete kinematic
reconstruction of neutrino-induced through-going muons tracks. Analysis of this
high statistics sample of minimum ionizing tracks demonstrates the reliability
of the geometric and calorimetric reconstruction in the ArgoNeuT detector
The ArgoNeuT Detector in the NuMI Low-Energy beam line at Fermilab
The ArgoNeuT liquid argon time projection chamber has collected thousands of
neutrino and antineutrino events during an extended run period in the NuMI
beam-line at Fermilab. This paper focuses on the main aspects of the detector
layout and related technical features, including the cryogenic equipment, time
projection chamber, read-out electronics, and off-line data treatment. The
detector commissioning phase, physics run, and first neutrino event displays
are also reported. The characterization of the main working parameters of the
detector during data-taking, the ionization electron drift velocity and
lifetime in liquid argon, as obtained from through-going muon data complete the
present report.Comment: 43 pages, 27 figures, 5 tables - update referenc
