Searching for Dark Matter at the LHC with a Mono-Z
We investigate a mono-Z process as a potential dark matter search strategy at
the LHC. In this channel a single Z boson recoils against missing transverse
momentum, attributed to dark matter particles, , which escape the
detector. This search strategy is related, and complementary to, monojet and
monophoton searches. For illustrative purposes we consider the process
in a toy dark matter model, where the Z boson is
emitted from either the initial state quarks, or from the internal propagator.
Among the signatures of this process will be a pair of muons with high pT that
reconstruct to the invariant mass of the Z, and large amounts of missing
transverse energy. Being a purely electroweak signal, QCD and other Standard
Model backgrounds are relatively easily removed with modest selection cuts. We
compare the signal to Standard Model backgrounds and demonstrate that, even for
conservative cuts, there exist regions of parameter space where the signal may
be clearly visible above background in future LHC data, allowing either new
discovery potential or the possibility of supplementing information about the
dark sector beyond that available from other observable channels.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure
CLA-producing adjunct cultures improve the nutritional value of sheep cheese fat
[EN]The influence of the autochthonous CLA-producing Lactobacillus plantarum TAUL 1588 and Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei SS 1644 strains and the ripening time on the fatty acid (FA) content and sensory characteristics of sheep cheese were investigated. Three cheese types with different cultures and the control cheese were produced in duplicate and ripened for 8 months. 86 individual FA were determined by gas chromatography. Ripening time (2, 90, 180 and 240 days) did not have a significant effect (P >.05) on the FA content. However, the presence of both Lactobacillus CLA-producing strains led to a decrease of the saturated FA content and to 1.30, 1.19 and 1.27 times higher levels of vaccenic acid, CLA and omega-3, respectively, when compared to the control cheese. This combination allowed obtaining sheep milk cheeses with a healthier FA content, without appreciable changes on sensory characteristics. Effect of forage type in the ovine diet on the nutritional profile of sheep milk cheese fat
[EN] The high nutritional value of sheep milk can be advantageous in the manufacture of cheese, and fat plays an important role in sheep cheese properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding common hay or silage diets used in commercial farms on the nutritional value of sheep cheese fat. We also monitored the effect of cheese ripening period on the fatty acid profile. Cheeses were produced from milk of sheep fed hay and silage diets from 8 farms, on 4 separate occasions (February, May, August, and November) over a 1-yr period. Eighty-four individual fatty acids were determined and identified by gas chromatography. Ripening time (100 and 180 d) significantly reduced moisture, acidity, and water activity of cheeses but did not affect the fatty acid content. However, hay feeding, compared with silage feeding, led to cheeses with 1.5- and 1.3-fold higher contents of vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid, without detrimental changes in saturated and n-3 (omega-3) fatty acid composition. Managing water scarcity at a river basin scale with economic instruments
This paper presents a conceptual framework for both assessing the role of economic instruments, and reshaping them in order to enhance their contribution to the goals of managing water scarcity. Water management problems stem from the mismatch between a multitude of individual decisions, on the one hand, and the current and projected status of water resources on the other. Economics can provide valuable incentives that drive individual decisions, and can design efficient instruments to address water governance problems in a context of conflicting interests and relevant transaction costs. Yet, instruments such as water pricing or trading are mostly based on general principles of welfare economics that are not readily applicable to assets as complex as water. A flaw in welfare economic approaches lies in the presumption that economic instruments may be good orbad on their own (e.g., finding the "right" price). This vision changes radically when we focus on the problem, instead of the instrument. In this paper, we examine how economic instruments to achieve welfare-enhancing water resource outcomes can realize their full potential in basin-scale management contexts. We follow a political economy perspective that views conflicts between public and private interest as the main instrumental challenge of water management. Our analysis allows us to better understand the critical importance of economic instruments for reconciling individual actions towards collective ambitions of water efficiency, equity and sustainability with lessons for later-adopting jurisdictions. Rather than providing panaceas, the successful design and implementation of economic instruments as key river basin management arrangements involves high transaction costs, wide institutional changes and collective action at different levels
Gauge-independent renormalization in the 2HDM
We present a consistent renormalization scheme for the CP-conserving
Two-Higgs-Doublet Model based on renormalization of the mixing
angles and the soft--symmetry-breaking scale in the Higgs sector.
This scheme requires to treat tadpoles fully consistently in all steps of the
calculation in order to provide gauge-independent -matrix elements. We show
how bare physical parameters have to be defined and verify the gauge
independence of physical quantities by explicit calculations in a general
-gauge. The procedure is straightforward and applicable to other
models with extended Higgs sectors. In contrast to the proposed scheme, the
renormalization of the mixing angles combined with popular
on-shell renormalization schemes gives rise to gauge-dependent results already
at the one-loop level. We present explicit results for electroweak NLO
corrections to selected processes in the appropriately renormalized

Abstract
The Study on COgnition and Prognosis in the Elderly (SCOPE) is a multicentre, prospective, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study designed to compare the effects of candesartan cilexetil and placebo in elderly patients with mild hypertension. The primary objective of the study is to assess the effect of candesartan cilexetil on major cardiovascular events. The secondary objectives of the study are to assess the effect of candesartan cilexetil on cognitive function and on total mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, renal function, hospitalization, quality of life and health economics. Male and female patients aged between 70 and 89 years, with a sitting systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 160-179 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 90-99 mmHg, and a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 24 or above, are eligible for the study. The overall target study population is 4000 patients, at least 1000 of whom are also to be assessed for quality of life and health economics data. After an open run-in period lasting 1-3 months, during which patients are assessed for eligibility and those who are already on antihypertensive therapy at enrolment are switched to hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg o.d., patients are randomized to receive either candesartan cilexetil 8 mg once daily (o.d.) or matching placebo o.d. At subsequent study visits, if SBP remains >160 mmHg, or has decreased by 85 mmHg, study treatment is doubled to candesartan cilexetil 16 mg o.d. or two placebo tablets o.d. Recruitment was completed in January 1999. At that time 4964 patients had been randomized. All randomized patients will be followed for an additional 2 years. If the event rate is lower than anticipated, the follow-up will be prolonged.
