Papillomas And Carcinomas Of The Choroid Plexus: Histological And Immunohistochemical Studies And Comparison With Normal Fetal Choroid Plexus.
Choroid plexus tumors are rare. Results on immunohistochemical features are scanty and controversial even regarding normal plexus. Thirteen cases of choroid plexus tumors and five samples of normal fetal choroid plexus were submitted to immunohistochemical study using a panel of epithelial, neuronal and stromal markers. Relevant histological findings were presence of clear cells in 3/5 papillomas (PP) and 7/8 carcinomas (CA) and all 5 fetal plexuses; rhabdoid cells, desmoplasia and vascular proliferation were found respectively in 3, 4 and 5 cases out of 6 poorly differentiated CA and were absent in PP and well differentiated CA. Pancytokeratin AE1/AE3 was strongly positive in all 13 cases, even in the undifferentiated component of poorly differentiated CA, where reactivity was focal in 3 and diffuse in 3 cases. Low molecular weight cytokeratin (35betaH11) was not expressed in any of the 8 CA, but was present in all 5 PP. In 4 of 6 poorly differentiated CA there was reactivity for smooth muscle actin (1A4) in 10 to 30% of the cells. This was true also for one case lacking rhabdoid cells. Laminin was undetectable in all 6 cases of poorly differentiated CA but was present in 4 PP and 2 well differentiated CA. All 5 fetal plexuses expressed GFAP.62600-
Total water potential variation in a soil table land topsequence, during two years
The objective of this work was to evaluate, fortnightly, during 1996/1997, the total soil water potential variation in a tableland topsequence in Sapeaçu county, BA, Brazil. This topsequence had the following characteristics: a) length of 190 m; b) slope of 0.097 m m-1; c) orange as growing crop; d) the upper third with a cohesive argisolic Yellow Latosol; e) the middle third with a cohesive Yellow Argisol; and f) the lower third with a non-cohesive Gray Argisol. Soil water was estimated by neutron probe at depths of 0.30, 0.70, 1.10, and 1.50 m. Based on water retention curves, matric potential and, in sequence, total soil water potential were determined, for each soil and depth in different times. The cohesive layer makes difficult the water flow in the soil profile, both in the wetting and in the drying processes. Consequently, the total water potential in soils with cohesive layer changed abruptly in the most superficial layer, during the time, and slowing in the deepest layers. In non-cohesive soil, the water potential changed abruptly only in the most superficial layer. The -1,500 kPa limit of soil water pressure as permanent wilting point is not applied to orange crop
Cerebral lymphoma mimicking glioblastoma in an AIDS patient / Linfoma cerebral que imita o glioblastoma em um paciente com AIDS
A 42-year-old male, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) positive for 13 years, but without use of antiviral therapy, presented weight loss of 6 kg and erythematous-purplish lesions in the right buttock. Biopsy was showed cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The patient received antiretroviral therapy and six cycles of chemotherapy achieving complete remission. After 5 years, the patient presented progressive headache with an episode of loss of balance with fall and mental confusion. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass lesion in the periventricular region, involving the splenium of the corpus callosum with restricted diffusion. The brain images were consistent with glioblastoma (GBM) or DLBCL (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma). The hypoperfusion of the lesion on MRI was of fundamental importance for the differential diagnosis, favouring the diagnosis of DLBCL

Pituitary Macroadenoma Presenting As A Nasal Tumor: Case Report.
Pituitary macroadenomas are rare intracranial tumors. In a few cases, they may present aggressive behavior and invade the sphenoid sinus and nasal cavity, causing unusual symptoms. In this paper, we report an atypical case of pituitary adenoma presenting as a nasal mass. The patient was a 44-year-old woman who had had amenorrhea and galactorrhea for ten months, with associated nasal obstruction, macroglossia and acromegaly. Both growth hormone and prolactin levels were increased. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large mass originating from the lower surface of the pituitary gland, associated with sella turcica erosion and tumor extension through the sphenoid sinus and nasal cavity. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a chromophobe pituitary adenoma with densely packed rounded epithelial cells, with some atypias and rare mitotic figures. There was no evidence of metastases. Macroadenoma invading the nasal cavity is a rare condition and few similar cases have been reported in the literature. This study contributes towards showing that tumor extension to the sphenoid sinus and nasopharynx needs to be considered and investigated in order to make an early diagnosis when atypical symptoms like nasal obstruction are present.132377-8
