A Conversational Academic Assistant for the Interaction in Virtual Worlds
Proceedings of: Forth International Workshop on User-Centric Technologies and applications (CONTEXTS 2010). Valencia, 07-10 September , 2010.The current interest and extension of social networking are rapidly introducing a large number of applications that originate new communication and interaction forms among their users. Social networks and virtual worlds, thus represent a perfect environment for interacting with applications that use multimodal information and are able to adapt to the specific characteristics and preferences of each user. As an example of this application, in this paper we present an example of the integration of conversational agents in social networks, describing the development of a conversational avatar that provides academic information in the virtual world of Second Life. For its implementation techniques from Speech Technologies and Natural Language Processing have been used to allow a more natural interaction with the system using voice.Funded by projects CICYT TIN2008-06742-C02-02/TSI, CICYT

Distinct incubation for homologous in vitro spermatozoa binding on swine oocytes subjected to different storage conditions
AbstractThe sperm in vitro binding assay in homologous oocytes can be used to estimate the boar fertility potential, but its usefulness may be limited by laboratorial structure and oocytes availability. This study aimed at determining the effect of distinct methods of oocytes conditioning and incubation media for the in vitro penetration (IVP) test. Oocytes used in the IVP test were: fresh and conditioned in PBS (T1); cooled and conditioned in PBS at 5°C for 48h (T2); or stored in ovaries frozen at −20°C (T3). For each treatment, two incubation media were tested at 39°C for 6h: modified TRIS buffer medium (mTBM); or Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) extender. The responses of interest were: IVP and polyspermy rates; and the number of penetrating spermatozoa per oocyte. All responses observed with incubation in BTS were inferior to those observed with incubation in mTBM (P<0.0001). When incubation was done in mTBM, none of the responses differed across treatments (P>0.05). However, when incubation was in BTS, all the three responses were superior for T1 than for T2 and T3 (P<0.05). Thus, the IVP test may be conducted with ovaries either cooled or recovered from frozen ovaries with results similar to those observed with fresh oocytes, if incubation is done in mTBM
Vacuum local and global electromagnetic self-energies for a point-like and an extended field source
We consider the electric and magnetic energy densities (or equivalently field
fluctuations) in the space around a point-like field source in its ground
state, after having subtracted the spatially uniform zero-point energy terms,
and discuss the problem of their singular behavior at the source's position. We
show that the assumption of a point-like source leads, for a simple Hamiltonian
model of the interaction of the source with the electromagnetic radiation
field, to a divergence of the renormalized electric and magnetic energy density
at the position of the source. We analyze in detail the mathematical structure
of such singularity in terms of a delta function and its derivatives. We also
show that an appropriate consideration of these singular terms solves an
apparent inconsistency between the total field energy and the space integral of
its density. Thus the finite field energy stored in these singular terms gives
an important contribution to the self-energy of the source. We then consider
the case of an extended source, smeared out over a finite volume and described
by an appropriate form factor. We show that in this case all divergences in
local quantities such as the electric and the magnetic energy density, as well
as any inconsistency between global and space-integrated local self-energies,
disappear.Comment: 8 pages. The final publication is available at link.springer.co
Constraining the expansion rate of the Universe using low-redshift ellipticals as cosmic chronometers
We present a new methodology to determine the expansion history of the
Universe analyzing the spectral properties of early type galaxies (ETG). We
found that for these galaxies the 4000\AA break is a spectral feature that
correlates with the relative ages of ETGs. In this paper we describe the
method, explore its robustness using theoretical synthetic stellar population
models, and apply it using a SDSS sample of 14 000 ETGs. Our motivation
to look for a new technique has been to minimise the dependence of the cosmic
chronometer method on systematic errors. In particular, as a test of our
method, we derive the value of the Hubble constant (stat)
(syst) (68% confidence), which is not only fully compatible with the
value derived from the Hubble key project, but also with a comparable error
budget. Using the SDSS, we also derive, assuming w=constant, a value for the
dark energy equation of state parameter (stat)
(syst). Given the fact that the SDSS ETG sample only reaches , this
result shows the potential of the method. In future papers we will present
results using the high-redshift universe, to yield a determination of H(z) up
to .Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, JCAP accepte
The impact of cannabidiol treatment on resting state functional connectivity, prefrontal metabolite levels and reward processing in recent-onset patients with a psychotic disorder
The first clinical trials with cannabidiol (CBD) as treatment for psychotic disorders have shown its potential as an effective and well-tolerated antipsychotic agent. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the antipsychotic profile of CBD are currently unclear. Here we investigated the impact of 28-day adjunctive CBD or placebo treatment (600 mg daily) on brain function and metabolism in 31 stable recent-onset psychosis patients (<5 years after diagnosis). Before and after treatment, patients underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) session including resting state functional MRI, proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and functional MRI during reward processing. Symptomatology and cognitive functioning were also assessed. CBD treatment significantly changed functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN; time × treatment interaction p = 0.037), with increased connectivity in the CBD (from 0.59 ± 0.39 to 0.80 ± 0.32) and reduced connectivity in the placebo group (from 0.77 ± 0.37 to 0.62 ± 0.33). Although there were no significant treatment effects on prefrontal metabolite concentrations, we showed that decreased positive symptom severity over time was associated with both diminishing glutamate (p = 0.029) and N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA; neuronal integrity marker) levels (p = 0.019) in the CBD, but not the placebo group. CBD treatment did not have an impact on brain activity patterns during reward anticipation and receipt or functional connectivity in executive and salience networks. Our results show that adjunctive CBD treatment of recent-onset psychosis patients induced changes in DMN functional connectivity, but not prefrontal metabolite concentrations or brain activity during reward processing. These findings suggest that DMN connectivity alteration may be involved in the therapeutic effects of CBD.</p
The chemical enrichment of the ICM from hydrodynamical simulations
The study of the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster and inter-galactic
media (ICM and IGM) represents a direct means to reconstruct the past history
of star formation, the role of feedback processes and the gas-dynamical
processes which determine the evolution of the cosmic baryons. In this paper we
review the approaches that have been followed so far to model the enrichment of
the ICM in a cosmological context. While our presentation will be focused on
the role played by hydrodynamical simulations, we will also discuss other
approaches based on semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, also critically
discussing pros and cons of the different methods. We will first review the
concept of the model of chemical evolution to be implemented in any
chemo-dynamical description. We will emphasise how the predictions of this
model critically depend on the choice of the stellar initial mass function, on
the stellar life-times and on the stellar yields. We will then overview the
comparisons presented so far between X-ray observations of the ICM enrichment
and model predictions. We will show how the most recent chemo-dynamical models
are able to capture the basic features of the observed metal content of the ICM
and its evolution. We will conclude by highlighting the open questions in this
study and the direction of improvements for cosmological chemo-dynamical models
of the next generation.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Space Science

Dalitz plot analysis of e+ e- --> pi0 pi0 gamma events at SQRT(s) ~ M(phi) with the KLOE detector
We have studied the Dalitz plot of the e+ e- --> pi0 pi0 gamma events
collected at SQRT(s) ~ M(phi) with the KLOE detector. In the dipion invariant
mass (Mpp) region below 700 MeV, the process under study is dominated by the
non-resonant process e+ e- --> omega pi0 with omega --> pi0 gamma whereas, for
higher Mpp values, the radiative phi decay to the f0(980) is the dominant
mechanism. Different theoretical models are used to fit the Dalitz plot, taking
also into account a possible contribution of the sigma(600). For each model, we
extract the f0(980) mass and its coupling to pipi, KKbar and to the phi.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, submitted to European Physics Journal
Systemizing Virtual Learning and Technologies by Managing Organizational Competency and Talents
The article presents promising components and practices of virtual learning and technologies and discusses how systemization can be made through managing organizational competency and talents. The main goal is to suggest how technologies should be incorporated within an organization to improve the effectiveness of employees’ learning, performance, and development. For technology implementation and adoption, we also introduce models for examining organizational maturity levels and integrating technologies. We argue that virtual learning and technologies are fundamentally pressing HRD roles to change from experts of learning and development to work solution partners leading and supporting the creation of a smart organization.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
SPACE: the spectroscopic all-sky cosmic explorer
We describe the scientific motivations, the mission concept and the instrumentation of SPACE, a class-M mission proposed for concept study at the first call of the ESA Cosmic-Vision 2015–2025 planning cycle. SPACE aims to produce the largest three-dimensional evolutionary map of the Universe over the past 10 billion years by taking near-IR spectra and measuring redshifts for more than half a billion galaxies at 0 < z < 2 down to AB ∼ 23 over 3π sr of the sky. In addition, SPACE will also target a smaller sky field, performing a deep spectroscopic survey of millions of galaxies to AB ∼ 26 and at 2 < z < 10+. These goals are unreachable with ground-based observations due to the ≈500 times higher sky background (see e.g. Aldering, LBNL report number LBNL-51157, 2001). To achieve the main science objectives, SPACE will use a 1.5 m diameter Ritchey- Chretien telescope equipped with a set of arrays of Digital Micro-mirror Devices covering a total field of view of 0.4 deg2, and will perform large-multiplexing multi-object spectroscopy (e.g. ≈6000 targets per pointing) at a spectral resolution of R∼400 as well as diffraction-limited imaging with continuous coverage from 0.8 to 1.8 μm. Owing to the depth, redshift range, volume coverage and quality of its spectra, SPACE will reveal with unique sensitivity most of the fundamental cosmological signatures, including the power spectrum of density fluctuations and its turnover. SPACE will also place high accuracy constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameter and its evolution by measuring the baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted when matter and radiation decoupled, the distanceluminosity relation of cosmological supernovae, the evolution of the cosmic expansion rate, the growth rate of cosmic large-scale structure, and high-z galaxy clusters. The datasets from the SPACE mission will represent a long lasting legacy for the whole astronomical community whose data will be mined for many years to come
Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DANE
Investigation at a --factory can shed light on several debated issues
in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and
experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in
the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum
Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for
improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of
kaons and eta/eta mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the
nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow
di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter
sector. We also report on the physics in the continuum with the
measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma
processes.Comment: 60 pages, 41 figures; added affiliation for one of the authors; added
