Treatment of dogs with compensated myxomatous mitral valve disease with spironolactone-a pilot study
Spironolactone improves outcome in dogs with advanced myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Its efficacy in preclinical MMVD is unknown. The hypothesis was the administration of spironolactone to dogs with compensated MMVD demonstrating risk factors for poorer prognosis will decrease the rate of disease progression. The aim was to provide pilot data to evaluate preliminary effects and sample size calculation for a definitive clinical trial
Diffractive Meson Production and the Quark-Pomeron Coupling
Diffractive meson production at HERA offers interesting possibilities to
investigate diffractive processes and thus to learn something about the
properties of the pomeron. The most succesful phenomenological description of
the pomeron so far assumes it to couple like a isoscalar photon to
single quarks. This coupling leads, however, to problems for exclusive
diffractive reactions. We propose a new phenomenological pomeron vertex, which
leads to very good fits to the known data, but avoids the problems of the old
vertex.Comment: 20 pages, latex with uuencoded postscript, revised versio
Odderon and seven Pomerons: QCD Reggeon field theory from JIMWLK evolution
We reinterpret the JIMWLK/KLWMIJ evolution equation as the QCD Reggeon field
theory (RFT). The basic "quantum Reggeon field" in this theory is the unitary
matrix which represents the single gluon scattering matrix. We discuss the
peculiarities of the Hilbert space on which the RFT Hamiltonian acts. We
develop a perturbative expansion in the RFT framework, and find several
eigenstates of the zeroth order Hamiltonian. The zeroth order of this
perturbation preserves the number of - channel gluons. The eigenstates have
a natural interpretation in terms of the - channel exchanges. Studying the
single - channel gluon sector we find the eigenstates which include the
reggeized gluon and five other colored Reggeons. In the two ( - channel)
gluon sector we study only singlet color exchanges. We find five charge
conjugation even states. The bound state of two reggeized gluons is the
standard BFKL Pomeron. The intercepts of the other Pomerons in the large
limit are where is the intercept of the BFKL
Pomeron, but their coupling in perturbation theory is suppressed by at least
relative to the double BFKL Pomeron exchange. For the Pomeron
we find . We also find three charge
conjugation odd exchanges, one of which is the unit intercept
Bartels-Lipatov-Vacca Odderon, while another one has an interecept greater than
unity. We explain in what sense our calculation goes beyond the standard
BFKL/BKP calculation. We make additional comments and discuss open questions in
our approach.Comment: 58 pages, 4 figures, Extended version. To appear in JHE

Modeling Power Generation Losses Due to Environmental and Fish Passage Attraction Flows at a Run-Of-River Hydroelectric Operation in the Northeast
Environmental mitigation represents an important, recurring cost to the hydropower industry, the largest renewable power source in the United States. Environmental flows are one such expense whereby hydro operations maintain a minimum flow in the river to mitigate impacts on aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Any hydroelectric facility may have a habitat maintenance flow requirement, but facilities with assisted aquatic organism passage structures, or fishways, may be subject to additional flow requirements associated with specific species migrations. This study assesses the economic impact of meeting environmental flow requirements in terms of losses to power generation at a representative hydroelectric facility and fish lift in the Northeast

Reconciliation and possible symbols of reconciliation in contemporaiy South AfricaIn this article the important issue of reconciliation is addressed, and certain dimensions of reconciliation are discussed: perspectives from Scripture, forgiveness as prerequisite; restitution as a result and the process itself. The important role of the church of Jesus Christ as initiator and facilitator of the process of reconciliation is also stressed. The article ends with a statement that the time has come for new symbols of reconciliation in South Africa and some ideas for reconciliatory gestures are proposed
Skewed Parton Distributions and F_2^D at beta -> 1
We show that the diffractive structure function is perturbatively calculable
in the domain where the diffractive mass is small but still outside the
resonance region. In this domain, which can be characterized by Lambda^2/Q^2 <<
1-beta << (Lambda^2/Q^2)^1/2, the structure function represents a new
observable, which is highly sensitive to the small-x skewed gluon distribution.
Our leading order calculation and the estimate of next-to-leading order
corrections are consistent with available data and demonstrate the potential of
more precise data to put further constraints on skewing effects.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, including five PostScript figure
Aquatic community response to volcanic eruptions on the Ecuadorian Andean flank: evidence from the palaeoecological record
Aquatic ecosystems in the tropical Andes are under increasing pressure from human modification of the landscape (deforestation and dams) and climatic change (increase of extreme events and 1.5 °C on average temperatures are projected for AD 2100). However, the resilience of these ecosystems to perturbations is poorly understood. Here we use a multi-proxy palaeoecological approach to assess the response of aquatic ecosystems to a major mechanism for natural disturbance, volcanic ash deposition. Specifically, we present data from two Neotropical lakes located on the eastern Andean flank of Ecuador. Laguna Pindo (1°27.132′S–78°04.847′W) is a tectonically formed closed basin surrounded by a dense mid-elevation forest, whereas Laguna Baños (0°19.328′S–78°09.175′W) is a glacially formed lake with an inflow and outflow in high Andean Páramo grasslands. In each lake we examined the dynamics of chironomids and other aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms to explore the effect of thick (> 5 cm) volcanic deposits on the aquatic communities in these two systems with different catchment features. In both lakes past volcanic ash deposition was evident from four large tephras dated to c.850 cal year BP (Pindo), and 4600, 3600 and 1500 cal year BP (Baños). Examination of the chironomid and aquatic assemblages before and after the ash depositions revealed no shift in composition at Pindo, but a major change at Baños occurred after the last event around 1500 cal year BP. Chironomids at Baños changed from an assemblage dominated by Pseudochironomus and Polypedilum nubifer-type to Cricotopus/Paratrichocladius type-II, and such a dominance lasted for approximately 380 years. We suggest that, despite potential changes in the water chemistry, the major effect on the chironomid community resulted from the thickness of the tephra being deposited, which acted to shallow the water body beyond a depth threshold. Changes in the aquatic flora and fauna at the base of the trophic chain can promote cascade effects that may deteriorate the ecosystem, especially when already influenced by human activities, such as deforestation and dams, which is frequent in the high Andes
Charm Contribution to the Structure Function in Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering
The charm contribution to the structure functions of diffractive deep
inelastic scattering is considered here within the context of the
Ingelman-Schlein model. Numerical estimations of this contribution are made
from parametrizations of the HERA data. Influence of the Pomeron flux factor is
analized as well as the effect of the shape of the initial parton distribution
employed in the calculations. The obtained results indicate that the charm
contribution to diffractive deep inelastic process might be large enough to be
measured in the HERA experiments.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures, to be published in Physical Review
The Total Cross Section and the BFKL Pomeron at Collider
We present a numerical estimate of the total cross
section at LEP and at the designed Next Linear Collider (NLC), based
upon the BFKL Pomeron. We find for the linear collider that the event rate is
substantial provided electrons scattered under small angles can be detected,
and a measurement of this cross section provides an excellent test of the BFKL
Pomeron. For LEP, although the number of events is substantially smaller, an
initial study of this process is feasible.Comment: 10 pages, latex, 5 figures included using epsfi
Pastorale berading aan persone geaffekteer deur MIV
Pastoral counselling to people affected by HIV.HIV is a pandemic which influences each and everyone in South Africa, the country in the world with the largest number of people living with HIV. The impact of HIV on the social, economical and micro level is tremendous. The effect of HIV on individual households is immediate, and poverty, sickness, stress, death and loneliness contribute to the devastation caused by this phenomenon. The pastoral counsellor should be equipped with the necessary knowledge to guide and support the person affected by HIV. The counselee must be empowered to handle his or her specific crisis significantly. Perspectives based on Scripture suggest how the Christian believer can manage sickness, suffering and death. The Scripture guides the Christian in times of suffering and conflict to persevere in the hope that God will give deliverance. In the article, it will be shown how the pastoral counsellor must, according to Scripture and as a called shepherd, admonish, educate, support and guide the counselee to accept the ministry of reconciliation, given to her or him by God through Christ his Son. The counselee affected by HIV will have to be empowered by the necessary knowledge in order to care for and support the person affected by HIV and be able to digest and cope with his or her own pain and stress. Pastoral counsellors can make use of the proposed counselling model in order to counsel persons affected by HIV
