    Accurate estimation of air pollution in outdoor routes for citizens and decision making

    There is clear evidence of the effects of air pollution on health. In this paper, we present an innovative application designed to assess Air Quality (AQ) exposure based on the World Health Organization’s AQ Guidelines, analysing pollutants and their concentrations independently. Our aim is to provide this information to citizens based on their health profile (medical history or requirements) before and during outdoor trips of their choice, both walking and cycling, empowering them to proactively make informed personal decisions about their route choices and identifying potentially unhealthy travel environments. For this purpose, we have access to official data from AQ monitoring stations that are updated periodically every 10 min. Then, by using spatial interpolation techniques (with Ordinary Kriging), we estimate each pollutant over a grid superimposed on the city map. Once the pollutants have been mapped on each route, they are analysed in order to consider the different alternatives for deciding and planning changes in speed or trajectory. We evaluated the application in the city of Valencia (Spain) as a use case under different scenarios, and showed the results to assess exposure to pollution on the routes of citizens

    Maternal copper status and neuropsychological development in infants and preschool children

    Introduction Copper (Cu) is an essential element involved in biological processes; however, excessive Cu could be harmful because of its reactive nature. Very few studies have evaluated its potential neurotoxic effects. We aimed to evaluate the association between maternal Cu levels and children's neuropsychological development. Methods Study subjects were mother-child pairs from the Spanish INMA (i.e. Childhood and Environment) Project. Cu was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in serum samples taken at the first trimester of pregnancy (2003-2005). Neuropsychological development was assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID) at 12 months (n = 651) and the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) at 5 years of age (n = 490). Covariates were obtained by questionnaires during pregnancy and childhood. Multivariate linear and non-linear models were built in order to study the association between maternal Cu and child neuropsychological development. Results The mean ± standard deviation of maternal Cu concentrations was 1606 ± 272 μg/L. In the multivariate analysis, a negative linear association was found between maternal Cu concentrations and both the BSID mental scale (beta = −0.051; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: −0.102, −0.001) and the MSCA verbal scale (beta = −0.044; 95%CI:-0.094, 0.006). Boys obtained poorer scores than girls, with increasing Cu at 12 months (interaction p-value = 0.040 for the mental scale and 0.074 for the psychomotor scale). This effect modification disappeared at 5 years of age. The association between Cu and the MSCA scores (verbal, perceptive performance, global memory and motor, general cognitive, and executive function scales) was negative for those children with lowest maternal iron concentrations (<938μg/L). Conclusion The Cu concentrations observed in our study were within the reference range established for healthy pregnant women in previous studies. The results of this study contribute to the body of scientific knowledge with important information on the possible neurotoxic capability of Cu during pregnancy

    Postnatal exposure to mercury and neuropsychological development among preschooler children

    The objective of this study was to describe the postnatal exposure to Hg and to evaluate its association with neuropsychological development among preschool children. The study population are 4–5 years old children (n = 1252) participant in the Spanish INMA Project. Total Hg was measured in cord blood and in hair samples taken at 4 years of age (2008–2012). Neuropsychological development was assessed using the McCarthy Scales of Children’s Abilities (MSCA). Information on covariates and possible confounders was obtained by questionnaires during pregnancy and childhood. Generalized additive and linear regression models were built in order to assess the relationship between MSCA scores and Hg exposure. We also evaluated the magnitude of the possible bias generated from measurement error in seafood intake estimate from questionnaire and Hg determination. The geometric mean of hair Hg was 0.98 μg/g [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.94, 1.03]. In the regression analysis, the association between Hg and the MSCA scores was positive for all the scales and statistically significant for the verbal (β = 0.89; 95%CI 0.38, 1.39), memory (β = 0.42; 95%CI 0.09, 0.76) and general cognitive scales (β = 1.35; 95%CI 0.45, 2.25). However, these associations were clearly attenuated when we adjusted by the children’s fish intake variables or when took into account theoretical scenarios of low precision in fish intake and Hg measurements. Hg levels in this Spanish population were high in comparison with other European countries; however, we did not observe adverse effects on child neuropsychological development associated with this postnatal exposure to Hg

    Actividades de aprendizaje activo para una evaluación sostenible en el ámbito universitario

    Desde que se inició la pandemia del COVID19, la docencia de nuestras asignaturas ha pasado por diversos modelos (virtual, híbrido y de nuevo presencial) de manera muy abrupta. Esto nos ha llevado a realizar una tarea continua de adaptación y detectar la necesidad de disponer de nuevas estrategias para conseguir una tutorización y evaluación continua del estudiantado que sea sostenible para el profesorado y, a su vez, útil para el estudiantado. Aunque existen múltiples herramientas en las plataformas de aprendizaje que utiliza el profesorado, se necesita integrar las actividades en una metodología conjunta que garantice el aprendizaje activo y autónomo, que fomente la metacognición en el alumnado, y asegure que reciben realimentaciones pertinentes a lo largo del curso. En este trabajo, analizamos qué actividades de aprendizaje activo pueden ser adecuadas para el alumnado y el profesorado. En lo que se refiere al estudiantado analizamos si le ha ayudado a reflexionar sobre su aprendizaje, el aprendizaje en sí, su implicación y su motivación. Para el profesorado, si percibe que estas actividades cumplen con su objetivo de aprendizaje, y además si la carga de trabajo relacionada con la evaluación es sostenible. Los resultados obtenidos de este estudio son relevantes para la comunidad educativa, ya que nos servirán para seleccionar las actividades de aprendizaje activo que cumplan con las dos premisas antes señaladas, que nos lleven a optimizar el trabajo del profesorado y a obtener una mayor satisfacción del estudiantado, mejorando o al menos manteniendo el aprendizaje.Since the COVID19 pandemic began, the teaching of our subjects has gone through different models (virtual, hybrid and again face-to-face) in a very abrupt manner. This has led us to carry out a continuous task of adaptation and to detect the need for new strategies to achieve continuous tutoring and assessment of students that is sustainable for the teaching staff and, at the same time, useful for the students. Although there are multiple tools in the learning platforms used by teachers, there is a need to integrate the activities into a joint methodology that guarantees active and autonomous learning, encourages metacognition in students, and ensures that they receive relevant feedback throughout the course. In this paper, we analyse which active learning activities are satisfactory for students and teachers. For the students, we analyse whether it has helped them to reflect on their learning, the learning itself, their involvement, and their motivation. For the teaching staff, whether they perceive these activities as fulfilling their learning objective, and whether the workload related to assessment will be less in the future. The results obtained from this study are relevant for the educational community, as they will help us to select active learning activities that comply with the two aforementioned premises, which will lead us to optimise the work of the teaching staff and to obtain greater student satisfaction, improving or at least maintaining learning.Este trabajo está financiado por UV-SFPIE_PID-1642016 y UV-SFPIE_PID-1642041 del Servei de Formació Permanent i Innovació Educativa de la UV

    Seguimiento del Máster en Ingeniería de Telecomunicación: medidas para conseguir la calidad y la excelencia

    El Máster Universitario en Ingeniería de Telecomunicación en la Universidad de Alicante es el título que se imparte desde la Escuela Politécnica Superior y que habilita para el ejercicio de la profesión regulada de Ingeniero de Telecomunicación. Consta de 90 ECTS y se imparte a lo largo de 2 cursos académicos. El máster está implantado desde el curso 2011-2012 por lo que durante el actual curso 2012-2013 tendremos egresados de la primera promoción. Una vez implantado en su totalidad, es posible realizar un seguimiento del máster con la intención de obtener la excelencia académica mediante todas aquellas medidas y procesos de evaluación internos que sean necesarios. Además también es conveniente evaluar el impacto social, universitario y empresarial del máster evaluando las carencias, lagunas y oportunidades de formación que se detecten y tomando las oportunas medidas correctoras. Será necesario tener en cuenta la relación del título con el mundo empresarial y con la sociedad en general que tiene el sector de las telecomunicaciones en la evaluación de la calidad docente en el aula

    Cabbage and fermented vegetables : From death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

    Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance as well as lung and endothelial damage, two severe outcomes of COVID-19. The nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is the most potent antioxidant in humans and can block in particular the AT(1)R axis. Cabbage contains precursors of sulforaphane, the most active natural activator of Nrf2. Fermented vegetables contain many lactobacilli, which are also potent Nrf2 activators. Three examples are: kimchi in Korea, westernized foods, and the slum paradox. It is proposed that fermented cabbage is a proof-of-concept of dietary manipulations that may enhance Nrf2-associated antioxidant effects, helpful in mitigating COVID-19 severity.Peer reviewe

    Autoantibodies against type I IFNs in patients with life-threatening COVID-19

    Interindividual clinical variability in the course of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is vast. We report that at least 101 of 987 patients with life-threatening coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia had neutralizing immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies (auto-Abs) against interferon-w (IFN-w) (13 patients), against the 13 types of IFN-a (36), or against both (52) at the onset of critical disease; a few also had auto-Abs against the other three type I IFNs. The auto-Abs neutralize the ability of the corresponding type I IFNs to block SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro. These auto-Abs were not found in 663 individuals with asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection and were present in only 4 of 1227 healthy individuals. Patients with auto-Abs were aged 25 to 87 years and 95 of the 101 were men. A B cell autoimmune phenocopy of inborn errors of type I IFN immunity accounts for life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia in at least 2.6% of women and 12.5% of men

    Nrf2-interacting nutrients and COVID-19 : time for research to develop adaptation strategies

    There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPAR gamma:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NF kappa B: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2 alpha:Elongation initiation factor 2 alpha). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT(1)R axis (AT(1)R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity
