A high-speed bi-polar outflow from the archetypical pulsating star Mira A
Optical images and high-dispersion spectra have been obtained of the ejected
material surrounding the pulsating AGB star Mira A. The two streams of knots on
either side of the star, found in far ultra-viollet (FUV) GALEX images, have
now been imaged clearly in the light of Halpha. Spatially resolved profiles of
the same line reveal that the bulk of these knots form a bi-polar outflow with
radial velocity extremes of +- 150 km/s with respect to the central star. The
South stream is approaching and the North stream receding from the observer. A
displacement away from Mira A between the position of one of the South stream
knots in the new Halpha image and its position in the previous Palomar
Observatory Sky Survey (POSS I) red plate has been noted. If interpreted as a
consequence of expansion proper motions the bipolar outflow is tilted at 69deg
+- 2deg to the plane of the sky, has an outflow velocity of 160 +- 10 km/s and

Transverse transport in graphite
Graphite is a layered material showing a strong anisotropy. Among the
unconventional properties reported by experiments, the electronic transport
along the c-axis, which has direct implications in order to build graphitic
devices, remains a controversial topic. We study the influence of inelastic
scattering on the electron tunnelling between layers. In the presence of
electron electron interactions, tunnelling processes are modified by inelastic

Deformation of a flexible fiber in a viscous flow past an obstacle
We study the deformation and transport of elastic fibers in a viscous
Hele-Shaw flow with curved streamlines. The variations of the global velocity
and orientation of the fiber follow closely those of the local flow velocity.
The ratios of the curvatures of the fibers by the corresponding curvatures of
the streamlines reflect a balance between elastic and viscous forces: this
ratio is shown experimentally to be determined by a dimensionless {\it Sperm
number} combining the characteristic parameters of the flow (transverse
velocity gradient, viscosity, fiber diameter/cell gap ratio) and those of the
fiber (diameter, effective length, Young's modulus). For short fibers, the
effective length is that of the fiber; for long ones, it is equal to the
transverse characteristic length of the flow. For , the
ratio of the curvatures increases linearly with ; For ,
the fiber reaches the same curvature as the streamlines
Detection of the old stellar component of the major Galactic bar
We present near-IR colour--magnitude diagrams and star counts for a number of
regions along the Galactic plane. It is shown that along the l=27 b=0 line of
sight there is a feature at 5.7 +-0.7kpc with a density of stars at least a
factor two and probably more than a factor five times that of the disc at the
same position. This feature forms a distinct clump on an H vs. J-H diagram and
is seen at all longitudes from the bulge to about l=28, but at no longitude
greater than this. The distance to the feature at l=20 is about 0.5kpc further
than at l=27 and by l=10 it has merged with, or has become, the bulge. Given
that at l=27 and l=21 there is also a clustering of very young stars, the only
component that can reasonably explain what is seen is a bar with half length of
