Julieta saline receives water from lagoa de Araruama, which is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, to the East of the city of Araruama and to the west of the city of Cabo Frio, between 22o 49’ and 22o 57’ S latitude and 42o 00’ and 42o 23’ W longitude. It is composed by a series of soil tanks obtained by natural excavation, where water gradually concentrates through natural evaporation until salt precipitation. The reservoirs can be divided in three types, according to their activity: cargo, evaporator and crystallizer tanks. The process of making such reservoirs waterproof is enabled bya fine layer of algae which is formed naturally with the passing of time. This study is based on monthly collects within the period ranging from May, 2004 to October, 2004, along three collection stations set up in different saline reservoirs. To identify the microbic composition, fresh, semi-permanent and permanent laminae were obtained and their analysis were performed by means of optical microscopy. The analysis revealed a total of twenty cyanobacterial types. In all layers, a predominant amount of oval spherical forms was observed. The predominance of cyanobacteria is justified by the fact that they are carriers of high morphological adaptations which enables them to survive in various types of environments andbe predominant in hypersaline sites

Bogs are ecosystems found mainly in lower zones that separates inner and outer sandy terraces, and rivers and streams from valleys. These environments are always flooded or suffer seasonal flooding or can stay dry in a extended dry season. Its shallow waters increase the role of the sediment in the maintenance of such ecosystem. The Brejo do Espinho (22º56’ S and 42º14’W) is a coastal body of water located 108 km from Rio de Janeiro city where are observed the development of thick microbial mats (about 2-4 cm in thickness). Aiming the characterization of the microbial mats, was made monthly collections in five collects in stations located in the bog borders. Microbial mats samples were taken using a spatula, deposited into plastics vials and later fixed with 4% formaldeid solution. For identification of the cyanobacterias, fresh and permanent slides were made. Smooth layered microbial mats present in subtidal and intertida regions are composed by thin layers with different colors: green, red and brown, who show also distinct cyanobacterialcomposition. These structures show stratus of cohesive lamina with low lithification. Analysis revealed 27 species of cyanobacterias. Chroococcaceae Nägeli 1849 family was the main family found with 37% of the total frequency followed by Phormidiaceae Anagnostidis & Komárek 1988 family with 18,5%, Synechococcaceae Komárek & Anagnostidis 1995 family with 11,1%, Pseudanabaenaceae Anagnostidis & Komárek 1988 family with 11,1%, Entophysalidaceae Geitler1925 family with 7,4%, Schizothricaceae Elenkin 1934 family with 7,4% and Oscillatoriaceae Gomont 1892 family with 7,4%. The domain of cyanobacterias in the Brejo do Espinho reflects its general plasticity that allows them to adapt to hostile conditions of the environment

Methods: Mixed primary cultures (neurons/glia) obtained from the brains of newborn isogenic BALB/c mice were inoculated with Rocio virus on the 7th day of culture, and the development of cytopathogenic effects was monitored. The infection was confirmed via immunocytochemistry (anti-ROCV), while viral replication was quantified in infected primary cultures. The titration method used depended on the infection period. Results: Rocio virus efficiently infected primary cultured neural cells, with the highest viral titer causing cytopathic changes was observed at 2 days post infection. The virus-infected primary culture survived for up to 7 days post infection, and viral load quantitation showed viral replication kinetics compatible with the cell death kinetics of cultures. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that mouse neural cell primary cultures support Rocio virus replication and could be used as an alternative system for studying Flavivirus infection in the central nervous system

The chemical profile of Dalbergia ecastaphyllum has been indicated as the botanical origin of Brazilian red propolis, an apicultural product with proven therapeutic properties. However, few studies have investigated this plant species. This study evaluated and compared microbiological quality, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity of stem and leaf samples of D. ecastaphyllum. The samples were collected in February 2015, in the southern region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. We performed the microbiological analyses, determined the contents of fatty acid, total phenol and flavonoid, and identified the chemical profile and antioxidant activit. Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and sulfite reducing clostridial spores were not detected in the samples. Acids of the family ω3 were recorded in the stems and ω6 in the leaves. The leaves presented better nutritional quality of the fraction, better antioxidant capacity in the tests by the DPPH method and β-carotene bleaching. There were 49 chemical compounds, of which 38 belonged to the class of flavonoids. The results indicate that stems and leaves of D. ecastaphyllum have biological properties. Leaves particularly are better for functional food formulation and as natural antioxidant.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract The study aimed to verify the sensory acceptability of dulce de leche formulations elaborate with cheese whey (CW) type minas frescal in natura and determine the physicochemical composition of the standard formulation, and those with a higher level of addition of CW and similar acceptance. Were drawn up five formulations of sour candies and F1 (0%) and the other containing 45, 50, 55 and 60% of CW. In physicochemical analyses were determined the moisture content, ash, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and calories. The sensory results showed that the formulations showed no statistical difference for the appearance, aroma, texture and color. However, F5 showed less acceptance for taste, global acceptance and purchase intent. It was found by physicochemical analysis of standard samples and 55% of CW that higher levels of ash, carbohydrates and calories were found in the formulation with CW, however the pattern showed higher amounts of moisture, protein and lipids. The preparation of the products showed that the level of addition to 55% CW in dulce de leche was the most accepted by the panel from among those containing this ingredient, resulting in sensory acceptance similar to standard product with good expectations of sales

This study aimed to characterize honey of Melipona scutellaris regarding its physicochemical parameters using the electronic tongue (e-tongue) technique combined with the multivariate statistical analysis for honey differentiation. Physicochemical parameters were evaluated following official methods of chemical analyses. A potentiometric electronic tongue with 16 cross-sensitivity sensors was used for the analysis. The Principal Component Analysis and the Cluster Analysis distinguished two groups for the sample set in the evaluation of physicochemical parameters, similar to results found using the electronic tongue. We verified a correlation greater than 0.70 between the profile of potentiometric signals and values of pH, ashes, electrical conductivity, HMF, diastase activity, reducing sugars, and apparent sucrose. The combined use of the electronic tongue with the statistical analysis showed the similarity between samples through the formation of two groups of the sample set. The electronic tongue may be used as a complement to traditional techniques of analyses to determine honey physicochemical parameters, constituting a promising tool in association with the multivariate statistical analysis. This study was financed in part by the “Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brasil” (CAPES) - Finance Code 001 and by the “Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia” (FAPESB) - under grant PAM0004/2014.
