Integrated utilization of grape skins from white grape pomaces
An approach for the integrated utilization of grape skins from white grape pomaces has been proposed. This consists of consecutive or simultaneous extraction of grape skins with neutral organic solvent and water under reflux. Organic extract is a valuable raw material for the isolation of oleanolic acid. The aqueous extract (ca 50%, w/w) is composed of essentially hexoses and suitable for the high yield (till 51%) bioethanol production at a maximum specific cell growth rate (μmax) of 0.29 h−1. The remained extracted grape skins are the complex of structural polysaccharides embedded into cutinous matrix. Extracted grape skins were shown to be a prospective raw material for the production of low-density boards (d ≤ 0.40) for insulation needs. The boards produced from grape skins and bind of 8% urea–formaldehyde resin revealed reasonable tensile strength (0.4 MPa) and a low thermal conductivity (0.09–0.12 W (m K)−1) over a wide range of temperatures (40–200 °C).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
PCR identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in a clinical sample from a patient with symptoms of tuberculous spondylodiscitis
A 42-year-old male complaining of thoracic spine pain was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. An X-ray and computer tomography of the thoracic spine showed spondylodiscitis of the L3 lumbar and L2-L3 intervertebral disk. The tuberculin skin test (PPD) was strongly positive. A radioscopy-guided fine needle aspirate of the affected area was cultured but did not reveal the cause of the disease. Two biopsy attempts failed to reveal the cause of the disease by culturing or by acid-fast-resistant staining (Ziehl Neelsen) of the specimens. A third biopsy also failed to detect the infectious agent by using microbiological procedures, but revealed the presence of a 245-bp amplicon characteristic of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex after PCR of the sample. The result demonstrates the efficacy of PCR for the identification of M. tuberculosis in situations in which conventional diagnosis by culturing techniques or direct microscopy is unable to detect the microorganism. Following this result the patient was treated with the antituberculous cocktail composed by rifampicin, pirazinamide and isoniazid during a six-month period. At the end of the treatment the dorsalgia symptoms had disappeared
Locus Of Control And Contraceptive Knowledge, Attitude And Practice Among University Students [lócus De Controle E Conhecimento, Atitude E Prática Contraceptivas Entre Adolescentes Universitários]
Objective: To assess the relationship between locus of control and knowledge, attitude and practice regarding pill and condom use among university students. Methods: The inquiry was developed in Campinas, a city in Southeastern Brazil, in 2006. A total of 295 adolescent newcomers to a public university answered a structured questionnaire and Levenson's multidimensional locus of control scale. The scores of the dimensions of locus of control were calculated and Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to assess their correlation with knowledge and practice concerning pill and condom use. In order to assess the relationship between the dimensions of locus of control and sociodemographic variables and variables related to the individuals' sex life, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used. RESULTS: Male adolescents had higher scores of powerful others externality when compared to female adolescents (p=0.01). Students living alone had lower internality (p=0.01). When locus of control was compared to condom use in the first intercourse, considering only the 102 students who informed the age of the beginning of sexual activity, greater internality was found among male adolescents who did not use condoms (p<0.05). When the locus of control scores were correlated with contraceptive knowledge and practice, it was found that the higher the powerful others externality locus, the lower the adequate use of contraceptive methods (r= -0.22, p=0.03). Conclusions: The powerful others externality locus influences the practice of contraceptive use in this group of adolescents.4413944Boruchovitch, E., Fatores associados a não-utilização de anticoncepcionais na adolescência (1992) Rev Saude Publica, 26 (6), pp. 437-443. , DOI:10.1590/S0034-89101992000600010Chubb, N.H., Fertman, C.I., Ross, J.L., Adolescent self-esteem and locus of control: a longitudinal study of gender and age differences (1997) Adolescence, 32 (125), pp. 113-129Commendador, K.A., Concept analysis of adolescent decision making and contraception (2003) Nurs Forum, 38 (4), pp. 27-35. , DOI:10.1111/j.0029-6473.2003.00027.xDela Coleta, M.F., Escala multidimensional de locus de controle de Levenson (1987) Arq Bras Psic, 39 (2), pp. 79-97Harvey, A.L., Risky and safe contraceptors: some personality factors (1976) J Psychol, 92 (1), pp. 109-112. , Half(1988) Designing clinical research: an epidemiological approach, p. 218. , Hulley, S.B., Cummings, S.R., editors. Detection of Borrelia lusitaniae, Rickettsia sp. IRS3, Rickettsia monacensis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Ixodes ricinus collected in Madeira Island, Portugal
A total of 300 Ixodes ricinus ticks were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Sequence analysis demonstrated 8 (2.7%) ticks infected with B. lusitaniae, 60 (20%) with Rickettsia spp., and 1 (0.3%) with A. phagocytophilum. Seven (2.3%) ticks were coinfected with B. lusitaniae and Rickettsia spp., 2 (0.6%) with R. monacensis, and 5 (1.7%) with Rickettsia sp. IRS3. The results of this study suggest simultaneous transmission of multiple tick-borne agents on Madeira Island, Portugal
Operational research IO 2021—analytics for a better world. XXI Congress of APDIO, Figueira da Foz, Portugal, November 7–8, 2021
This book provides the current status of research on the application of OR methods to solve emerging and relevant operations management problems. Each chapter is a selected contribution of the IO2021 - XXI Congress of APDIO, the Portuguese Association of Operational Research, held in Figueira da Foz from 7 to 8 November 2021. Under the theme of analytics for a better world, the book presents interesting results and applications of OR cutting-edge methods and techniques to various real-world problems. Of particular importance are works applying nonlinear, multi-objective optimization, hybrid heuristics, multicriteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis, simulation, clustering techniques and decision support systems, in different areas such as supply chain management, production planning and scheduling, logistics, energy, telecommunications, finance and health. All chapters were carefully reviewed by the members of the scientific program committee.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
