    What Kind of “Green” do the Guests Want? An Exploration of Adoption of Luxury Hotel Green Room Attributes

    This study aims to provide insights for sustainability initiatives in Singapore luxury hotels. We explore the impact of green room attributes toward guests’ satisfaction and hotel selection. We surveyed 387 respondents to identify their preferences for green room attributes. Among different green room attributes, we find that younger travelers are satisfied with cloth laundry bags, while older travelers appreciate wooden keys. A female guest is more likely to enjoy eco-friendly food and beverages amenities, while a male guest is more likely to appreciate motion or occupancy sensors. With regard to choosing a hotel, those traveling for leisure and at an older age ranked service quality as more important. Female travelers appreciate cleanliness compared to room rates, and those with higher education ranked sustainability initiatives higher. The analysis of demographic factors can be referenced by the hospitality industry practitioners and the hoteliers of luxury hotels operators when they plan to implement green room features or marketing strategies targeted to a specific segment of customers. As for the greater aim, the research contributes to the literature that focuses on the rise of green consumption to support global sustainability initiatives

    Alcohol Abstinence Does Not Fully Reverse Abnormalities of Mucosal-Associated Invariant T Cells in the Blood of Patients With Alcoholic Hepatitis

    OBJECTIVES: Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) develops in approximately 30% of chronic heavy drinkers. The immune system of patients with AH is hyperactivated, yet ineffective against infectious diseases. Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are innate-like lymphocytes that are highly enriched in liver, mucosa, and peripheral blood and contribute to antimicrobial immunity. We aimed to determine whether MAIT cells were dysregulated in heavy drinkers with and without AH and the effects of alcohol abstinence on MAIT cell recovery. METHODS: MR1 tetramers loaded with a potent MAIT cell ligand 5-(2-oxopropylideneamino)-6-d-ribitylaminouracil were used in multiparameter flow cytometry to analyze peripheral blood MAIT cells in 59 healthy controls (HC), 56 patients with AH, and 45 heavy drinkers without overt liver disease (HDC) at baseline and 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Multiplex immunoassays were used to quantify plasma levels of cytokines related to MAIT cell activation. Kinetic Turbidimetric Limulus Amebocyte Lysate Assay and ELISA were performed to measure circulating levels of 2 surrogate markers for bacterial translocation (lipopolysaccharide and CD14), respectively. RESULTS: At baseline, patients with AH had a significantly lower frequency of MAIT cells than HDC and HC. HDC also had less MAIT cells than HC (median 0.16% in AH, 0.56% in HDC, and 1.25% in HC). Further, the residual MAIT cells in patients with AH expressed higher levels of activation markers (CD69, CD38, and human leukocyte antigen [HLA]-DR), the effector molecule granzyme B, and the immune exhaustion molecule PD-1. Plasma levels of lipopolysaccharide and CD14 and several cytokines related to MAIT cell activation were elevated in patients with AH (interferon [IFN]-α, interleukin [IL]-7, IL-15, IL-17, IL-18, IL-23, IFN-γ, and tumor necrosis factor α). Decreased MAIT cell frequency and upregulated CD38, CD69, and HLA-DR correlated negatively and positively, respectively, with aspartate aminotransferase level. MAIT cell frequency negatively correlated with IL-18. HLA-DR and CD38 levels correlated with several cytokines. At follow-ups, abstinent patients with AH had increased MAIT cell frequency and decreased MAIT cell activation. However, MAIT cell frequency was not fully normalized in patients with AH (median 0.31%). DISCUSSION: We showed that HDC had a reduction of blood MAIT cells despite showing little evidence of immune activation, whereas patients with AH had a severe depletion of blood MAIT cells and the residual cells were highly activated. Alcohol abstinence partially reversed those abnormalities

    Bethe-Ansatz density-functional theory of ultracold repulsive fermions in one-dimensional optical lattices

    We present an extensive numerical study of ground-state properties of confined repulsively interacting fermions on one-dimensional optical lattices. Detailed predictions for the atom-density profiles are obtained from parallel Kohn-Sham density-functional calculations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The density-functional calculations employ a Bethe-Ansatz-based local-density approximation for the correlation energy, which accounts for Luttinger-liquid and Mott-insulator physics. Semi-analytical and fully numerical formulations of this approximation are compared with each other and with a cruder Thomas-Fermi-like local-density approximation for the total energy. Precise quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the reliability of the various local-density approximations, and in conjunction with these allow to obtain a detailed microscopic picture of the consequences of the interplay between particle-particle interactions and confinement in one-dimensional systems of strongly correlated fermions.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, submitte

    Alignment of Brightest Cluster Galaxies with their Host Clusters

    We examine the alignment between Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and their host clusters in a sample of 7031 clusters with 0.08<z<0.44 found using a matched-filter algorithm and an independent sample of 5744 clusters with 0.1<z<0.3 selected with the maxBCG algorithm, both extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 imaging data. We confirm that BCGs are preferentially aligned with the cluster's major axis; clusters with dominant BCGs (>0.65 mag brighter than the mean of the second and third ranked galaxies) show stronger alignment than do clusters with less dominant BCGs at the 4.4 sigma level. Rich clusters show a stronger alignment than do poor clusters at the 2.3 sigma level. Low redshift clusters (z<0.26) show more alignment than do high redshift (z>0.26) clusters, with a difference significant at the 3.0 sigma level. Our results do not depend on the algorithm used to select the cluster sample, suggesting that they are not biased by systematics of either algorithm. The correlation between BCG dominance and cluster alignment may be a consequence of the hierarchical merging process which forms the cluster.
