The energy budgets of giant impacts
Giant impacts dominate the final stages of terrestrial planet formation and set the configuration and compositions of the final system of planets. A giant impact is believed to be responsible for the formation of Earth's Moon, but the specific impact parameters are under debate. Because the canonical Moon‐forming impact is the most intensely studied scenario, it is often considered the archetypal giant impact. However, a wide range of impacts with different outcomes are possible. Here we examine the total energy budgets of giant impacts that form Earth‐mass bodies and find that they differ substantially across the wide range of possible Moon‐forming events. We show that gravitational potential energy exchange is important, and we determine the regime in which potential energy has a significant effect on the collision outcome. Energy is deposited heterogeneously within the colliding planets, increasing their internal energies, and portions of each body attain sufficient entropy for vaporization. After gravitational re‐equilibration, post‐impact bodies are strongly thermally stratified, with varying amounts of vaporized and supercritical mantle. The canonical Moon‐forming impact is a relatively low‐energy event and should not be considered the archetype of accretionary giant impacts that form Earth‐mass planets. After a giant impact, bodies are significantly inflated in size compared to condensed planets of the same mass, and there are substantial differences in the magnitudes of their potential, kinetic, and internal energy components. As a result, the conditions for metal‐silicate equilibration and the subsequent evolution of the planet may vary widely between different impact scenarios
Enhanced coupling to microsphere resonances with optical fibers
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Morphology-dependent resonances (MDR's) of polystyrene microspheres were excited by an optical fiber coupler. For optical elimination of the air-cladding interface at the optical fiber coupler surface, the microsphere was immersed in an index-matching oil. MDR's were observed, even though the relative refractive index between the microsphere and the oil was only 1.09. The observed MDR spectra are in good agreement with the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and the localization principle. The scattering efficiency into each MDR is estimated as a function of the impact parameter by means of generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America
New chemical analyses of the Suurberg volcanic rocks and their significance in relation to Mesozoic volcanism in Southern Africa
Volcanic rocks are found associated with several of the late Mesozoic basins of southern South Africa. Bentonites are known from Plettenberg Bay and, according to an unconfirmed report, they are also found in the Worcester Basin, while vitric tuffs have been recorded from east of Oudtshoorn. The most extensive occurrences, however, are those of the Suurberg Group, which crops out sporadically around the margins of the Algoa Basin
Protocol for a national monthly survey of alcohol use in England with 6-month follow-up: 'The Alcohol Toolkit Study'.
Timely tracking of national patterns of alcohol consumption is needed to inform and evaluate strategies and policies aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm. Between 2014 until at least 2017, the Alcohol Toolkit Study (ATS) will provide such tracking data and link these with policy changes and campaigns. By virtue of its connection with the 'Smoking Toolkit Study' (STS), links will also be examined between alcohol and smoking-related behaviour
What do we know about the diets of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia? A systematic literature review.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of published research on the dietary intake of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. METHODS: Peer-reviewed literature from 1990 to October 2016 was searched to identify studies that measured the dietary intake of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. Study quality was assessed using a purposely devised quality appraisal tool. Meta-analysis was not possible due to the heterogeneity in dietary intake assessment methods. A narrative synthesis of study findings, where key themes were compared and contrasted was completed. RESULTS: Twenty-five articles from twenty studies with outcome measures related to dietary intake were included. Dietary intake was assessed by electronic store sales, store turnover method, 24-hour dietary recall, food frequency questionnaire and short questions. Consistent findings were low reported intakes of fruit and vegetables and high intakes of total sugar and energy-dense, nutrient-poor food and beverages. CONCLUSIONS: While differences between studies and study quality limit the generalisability of the findings, most studies suggest that the diets of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are inadequate. Implications for public health: A more concerted approach to understanding dietary patterns of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is required to inform policy and practice to improve diet and nutrition
Cancellation of probe effects in measurements of spin polarized momentum density by electron positron annihilation
Measurements of the two dimensional angular correlation of the
electron-positron annihilation radiation have been done in the past to detect
the momentum spin density and the Fermi surface. We point out that the momentum
spin density and the Fermi Surface of ferromagnetic metals can be revealed
within great detail owing to the large cancellation of the electron-positron
matrix elements which in paramagnetic multiatomic systems plague the
interpretation of the experiments. We prove our conjecture by calculating the
momentum spin density and the Fermi surface of the half metal CrO2, who has
received large attention due to its possible applications as spintronics
material
Touch DNA collection - Performance of four different swabs.
A collaborative study conducted by three police forensic units, a DNA laboratory, and a forensic academic institute was undertaken in order to compare the performance of four different swabs in controlled and quasi-operational conditions. For this purpose, a reference swab (Prionics cardboard evidence collection kit) currently used within the police forensic units and 3 challenger swabs (COPAN 4N6FLOQSwabs™ (Genetics variety), Puritan FAB-MINI-AP and Sarstedt Forensic Swab) were used for collecting DNA traces from previously used items (referred as "touch DNA" in this article) including on 60 collars, 60 screwdrivers and 60 steering wheels obtained from volunteers. For each comparison, the surface considered was divided into two equal components; one was sampled with the reference swab and the other with one of the three challenger swabs. This lead to a total of 360 samples. Conclusions were consistent within the four operational partners. From a practical point of view, the COPAN 4N6FLOQSwabs™ (Genetics variety) was judged the most convenient to use. Furthermore, it allowed the recovery of significantly more DNA from collars (0.65 vs 0.13 ng/μL) and steering wheels (2.82 vs 1.77 ng/μL), and a similar amount of DNA from screwdrivers (0.032 vs 0.026 ng/μL) compared with the Prionics reference swab. The two other challenger swabs provided results that were not significantly different from the reference swab, except for the Puritan swab, whose performance was significantly lower for steering wheels (0.37 vs 0.58 ng/μL). As part of a conservation study, 50 μL of a blood dilution (1/4 with PBS) was deposited on a total of 105 COPAN (Genetics and Crime Scene varieties), Prionics and Sarstedt swabs. They were stored within a cupboard at room temperature. The integrity of the recovered DNA was evaluated with NGM SElect™ DNA profiles after different time-spans ranging from 1 day to 12 months by comparing the height difference of the peaks occurring at the shortest and longest loci, respectively. DNA seemed to remain stable, except when using the COPAN 4N6FLOQSwabs™ treated with an antimicrobial agent (Crime scene variety), which resulted in significant DNA degradation. Following these tests, the COPAN 4N6FLOQSwabs™ (Genetics variety), a model with a desiccant, was selected for further testing in fully operational conditions
