Making a community network sustainable: the future of the wired high rise

Abstract Much time and money has been committed by governments, private business and the third sector over the last five years in establishing opportunities for underserved populations to gain access to new forms of information and communication technologies, in an effort to overcome the so-called ‘digital divide’. This paper traces the efforts which have been made to establish a networked community at a single high rise public housing estate in inner Melbourne, Australia, and considers some of the potential opportunities for and barriers to ensuring the continuity of the network, which is large, complex, costly and potentially fragile, into the future

Market Thickness, Sunk Entry Costs, Firm Heterogeneity and the Outsourcing Decision: Empirical Evidence of Manufacturing Firms in France

In this paper I investigate, empirically, the outsourcing strategy by firms in French manufacturing industries. I particularly focus on the effect of the market thickness and of firm heterogeneity on the outsourcing strategy. For this purpose, I estimate a dynamic probit model where I link the decision to outsource to previous outsourcing behaviour. I am able to estimate the sunk entry costs incurred by the firms when adopting an outsourcing strategy. The results show that outsourcing is a persistent strategy adopted by more productive firms and larger ones. They also show that market thickness reduces search costs and enhances the establishment of outsourcing relationships.Outsourcing, Firm Heterogeneity, Dynamic Binary Choice Models, Market Thickness

Creative isomorphism between object, idea and states of consciousness

An artist’s report on the composition of ‘The Green Lion Eats the Sun’ (2014) for double bell euphonium, in which a severe case of ‘writer’s block’ was resolved in unusual circumstances. The work was largely composed in a busy airport lounge during a 7-hour delay in which I switched into a trance-like state of high creative focus. The subject explored in the composition is that of parallel structures of consciousness in which one can only gain access to one world at a time through a switching mechanism. This idea partially relates to Benjamin Libet’s experiments showing that there are gaps perforating the weave of our consciousness and in which perception is seen to be a discontinuous phenomenon (Massumi, 2014). The musical work is realized through a parallelism between the structure of this dual interior life and the morphology of the instrument with its two bells or sound sources that can only be activated alternately. The report looks at the isomorphic relation between an object (the musical instrument), the artistic concept (conscious and unconscious layers) and the state of mind in which the composition was carried out, speculating on ways in which external representations help to amplify and prompt creative thinking in music

COMPETITION POLICY: IS IT BAD FOR BUSINESS?

    Get PDF
Of late, the element of competition has posed to be a conundrum to the emerging economies; Malaysia is no exception. Selection of economies theories indicated; competition has been used in innumerable sense. Entrepreneurial competition among producers defines competition as an attempt to offer product at lower prices, in contrast to the adjective; competition policy denotes deregulation of markets with a framework that elevates market disciplines, eliminates distortion and promotes economic efficiency. In developing a competitive framework: a significant question arose; does competition policy merely generates economic efficiency? Empirical analysis on trade and communication has indicated positive impacts. However, competition in Malaysia i.e. implemented through sector regulation; for example in electricity generation has shown little changes on economic efficiency and other benefits. This paper suggests competition policy advocates economic advantages and maximization of other benefits i.e. customer welfare. Simultaneously effects business dynamics. The key to workable ‘model’ originates from strong and independent structural and administrative implementation of the policy. This research reiterates plausible arguments of the benefits i.e. competitive markets generate efficiency and allow for the reflection of true prices in the markets. Alternatively, it also highlights competition impacts on business dynamics and cognizance of Malaysian Competition Act 2010competition, competition policy, economic efficiency, Malaysia and Competition Act 2010

Celebrity worship and incidence of elective cosmetic surgery: evidence of a link among young adults.

Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to explore among young adults whether celebrity worship predicted the incidence of elective cosmetic surgery within the period of 8 months after controlling for several known predictors of elective cosmetic surgery. Methods: A total of 137 young adults completed questionnaire measures of attitudes toward a celebrity whose body image they admired, previous and vicarious experience of elective cosmetic surgery, attitudes toward cosmetic surgery, and a range of psychological and demographic measures at time 1. Participants were then asked to report whether they had undergone elective cosmetic surgery 8 months later. Results: After controlling for several known predictors of elective cosmetic surgery, intense-personal celebrity worship of a celebrity whose body shape was admired by the participant predicted the incidence of elective cosmetic surgery within an 8-month period. Conclusions: The current findings suggest that the type of para-social relationship that young adults form with celebrities, particularly with those whose body shape is admired, may need to be considered by those when speaking to, and educating, young people about their choices around elective cosmetic surgery
