Solutions of the dispersion equation in the region of overlapping of zero-sound and particle-hole modes
In this paper the solutions of the zero-sound dispersion equation in the
random phase approximation (RPA) are considered. The calculation of the damped
zero-sound modes \omega_s(k) (complex frequency of excitation) in the nuclear
matter is presented. The method is based on the analytical structure of the
polarization operators \Pi(\omega,k). The solutions of two dispersion equations
with \Pi(\omega,k) and with Re(\Pi(\omega,k)) are compared. It is shown that in
the first case we obtain one-valued smooth solutions without "thumb-like"
forms. Considering the giant resonances in the nuclei as zero-sound excitations
we compare the experimental energy and escape width of the giant dipole
resonance (GDR) in the nucleus A with \omega_s(k) taken at a definite wave
vector k=k_A.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures; revised versio
Bifurcation analysis and application for impulsive systems with delayed impulses
Electronic version of an article published in International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, Volume 27, Issue 12, November 2017, 1750186 [23 pages]. DOI: 10.1142/S0218127417501863, © World Scientific Publishing Company, https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscinet/ijbcIn this article, we present a systematic approach to bifurcation analysis of impulsive systems with autonomous or periodic right-hand sides that may exhibit delayed impulse terms. Methods include Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction and center manifold reduction. Both methods are presented abstractly in the context of the stroboscopic map associated to a given impulsive system, and are illustrated by way of two in-depth examples: the analysis of a SIR model of disease transmission with seasonality and unevenly distributed moments of treatment, and a scalar logistic differential equation with a delayed census impulsive harvesting effort. It is proven that in some special cases, the logistic equation can exhibit a codimension two bifurcation at a 1:1 resonance point
Surface nanoscale axial photonics:robust fabrication of high-quality-factor microresonators
Recently introduced surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) makes it possible to fabricate high-Q-factor microresonators and other photonic microdevices by dramatically small deformation of the optical fiber surface. To become a practical and robust technology, the SNAP platform requires methods enabling reproducible modification of the optical fiber radius at nanoscale. In this Letter, we demonstrate superaccurate fabrication of high-Q-factor microresonators by nanoscale modification of the optical fiber radius and refractive index using CO laser and UV excimer laser beam exposures. The achieved fabrication accuracy is better than 2Å in variation of the effective fiber radius
Parameter mismatches, variable delay times and synchronization in time-delayed systems
We investigate synchronization between two unidirectionally linearly coupled
chaotic non-identical time-delayed systems and show that parameter mismatches
are of crucial importance to achieve synchronization. We establish that
independent of the relation between the delay time in the coupled systems and
the coupling delay time, only retarded synchronization with the coupling delay
time is obtained. We show that with parameter mismatch or without it neither
complete nor anticipating synchronization occurs. We derive existence and
stability conditions for the retarded synchronization manifold. We demonstrate
our approach using examples of the Ikeda and Mackey-Glass models. Also for the
first time we investigate chaos synchronization in time-delayed systems with
variable delay time and find both existence and sufficient stability conditions
for the retarded synchronization manifold with the coupling delay lag time.
Also for the first time we consider synchronization between two
unidirectionally coupled chaotic multi-feedback Ikeda systems and derive
existence and stability conditions for the different anticipating, lag, and
complete synchronization regimes.Comment: 12 page
Structuring visual exploratory analysis of skill demand
The analysis of increasingly large and diverse data for meaningful interpretation and question answering is handicapped by human cognitive limitations. Consequently, semi-automatic abstraction of complex data within structured information spaces becomes increasingly important, if its knowledge content is to support intuitive, exploratory discovery. Exploration of skill demand is an area where regularly updated, multi-dimensional data may be exploited to assess capability within the workforce to manage the demands of the modern, technology- and data-driven economy. The knowledge derived may be employed by skilled practitioners in defining career pathways, to identify where, when and how to update their skillsets in line with advancing technology and changing work demands. This same knowledge may also be used to identify the combination of skills essential in recruiting for new roles. To address the challenges inherent in exploring the complex, heterogeneous, dynamic data that feeds into such applications, we investigate the use of an ontology to guide structuring of the information space, to allow individuals and institutions to interactively explore and interpret the dynamic skill demand landscape for their specific needs. As a test case we consider the relatively new and highly dynamic field of Data Science, where insightful, exploratory data analysis and knowledge discovery are critical. We employ context-driven and task-centred scenarios to explore our research questions and guide iterative design, development and formative evaluation of our ontology-driven, visual exploratory discovery and analysis approach, to measure where it adds value to users’ analytical activity. Our findings reinforce the potential in our approach, and point us to future paths to build on
Revisiting vertical structure of neutrino-dominated accretion disks: Bernoulli parameter, neutrino trapping and other distributions
We revisit the vertical structure of neutrino dominated accretion flows
(NDAFs) in spherical coordinates with a new boundary condition based on the
mechanical equilibrium. The solutions show that NDAF is significantly thick.
The Bernoulli parameter and neutrino trapping are determined by the mass
accretion rate and the viscosity parameter. According to the distribution of
the Bernoulli parameter, the possible outflow may appear in the outer region of
the disk. The neutrino trapping can essentially affect the neutrino radiation
luminosity. The vertical structure of NDAF is like a "sandwich", and the
multilayer accretion may account for the flares in gamma-ray bursts.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

Stationary phase slip state in quasi-one-dimensional rings
The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter
vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the
phase by at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform
rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. However,
for non-uniform rings with e.g. variations of geometrical or physical
parameters or with attached wires this state can be stabilized and may be
realized experimentally.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, RevTex 4.0 styl
Hydrogen peroxide production in an atmospheric pressure RF glow discharge: comparison of models and experiments
The production of (Formula presented.) in an atmospheric pressure RF glow discharge in helium-water vapor mixtures has been investigated as a function of plasma dissipated power, water concentration, gas flow (residence time) and power modulation of the plasma. (Formula presented.) concentrations up to 8 ppm in the gas phase and a maximum energy efficiency of 0.12 g/kWh are found. The experimental results are compared with a previously reported global chemical kinetics model and a one dimensional (1D) fluid model to investigate the chemical processes involved in (Formula presented.) production. An analytical balance of the main production and destruction mechanisms of (Formula presented.) is made which is refined by a comparison of the experimental data with a previously published global kinetic model and a 1D fluid model. In addition, the experiments are used to validate and refine the computational models. Accuracies of both model and experiment are discussed
Interference between the halves of a double-well trap containing a Bose-Einstein condensate
Interference between the halves of a double-well trap containing a
Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. It is found that when the atoms in the two
wells are initially in the coherent state, the intensity exhibits collapses and
revivals, but it does not for the initial Fock states. Whether the initial
states are in the coherent states or in a Fock states, the fidelity time has
nothing to do with collision. We point out that interference and its fidelity
can be adjusted experimentally by properly preparing the number and initial
states of the system.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phy. rev.
