Transport and recombination through weakly coupled localized spin pairs in semiconductors during coherent spin excitation
Semi-analytical predictions for the transients of spin-dependent transport
and recombination rates through localized states in semiconductors during
coherent electron spin excitation are made for the case of weakly spin-coupled
charge carrier ensembles. The results show that the on-resonant Rabi frequency
of electrically or optically detected spin-oscillation doubles abruptly as the
strength of the resonant microwave field gamma B_1 exceeds the Larmor frequency
separation within the pair of charge carrier states between which the transport
or recombination transition takes place. For the case of a Larmor frequency
separation of the order of gamma B_1 and arbitrary excitation frequencies, the
charge carrier pairs exhibit four different nutation frequencies. From the
calculations, a simple set of equations for the prediction of these frequencies
is derived
Perceived challenges in business development of smallholder dairy farmers in three Malawian regions
Dairy farmers face various challenges in developing their businesses. The current literature identifies several constraints towards a more efficient dairy sector that relate mostly to on-farm management practices. The available studies analyze constraints mostly from the objective viewpoint of the researcher, whereas very little is known about what farmers themselves perceive to be challenging. To better understand the farmers’ perspective and what they perceive to be challenging, and how these challenges differ across regions, this paper builds on a survey of 529 dairy farmers in Malawi. In the survey, respondents were asked in an open question to name their three main challenges. Based on the responses, a three-level coding scheme was elaborated. Data were then coded by two researchers to ensure reliability of coding. Codes were then used to calculate relative frequencies for the different challenges and to perform chi-square tests to check for regional differences in frequencies. Results suggest that farmers perceive low milk price and milk yield, animal health, availability of feedstock, and the costs for drugs as the main challenges. The analysis also revealed that the challenges vary strongly between the three main regions in the country – Blantyre (south), Lilongwe (central), and Mzuzu (north). The perceived challenges reflect the different production systems in the regions. In Blantyre, dairy farming is low in intensity, and farmers thus perceive inputs, in particular the availability of fodder, as well as outputs, in particular milk yields more frequently as a challenge than farmers in Lilongwe and Mzuzu. In contrast, dairy farming in Lilongwe is the most intense. Accordingly, farmers in Lilongwe perceive costs, in particular for inputs such as mash and concentrates as major constraints. Farmers in Mzuzu, which is a rather remote region, consider a lack of assistance, in particular concerning extension services significantly more challenging than the farmers in the other two regions do. Considering these insights, development work and extensions services may be able to increase outcomes in the dairy sector by targeting the regional challenges.Keywords: Challenges, dairy production, smallholders, Malawi, qualitative study, region
Distributed leadership, trust and online communities
This paper analyses the role of distributed leadership and trust in online communities. The team-based informal ethos of online collaboration requires a different kind of leadership from that in formal positional hierarchies. Such leadership may be more flexible and sophisticated, capable of encompassing ambiguity and rapid change. Online leaders need to be partially invisible, delegating power and distributing tasks. Yet, simultaneously, online communities are facilitated by the high visibility and subtle control of expert leaders. This paradox: that leaders need to be both highly visible and invisible as appropriate, was derived from prior research and tested in the analysis of online community discussions using a pattern-matching process. It is argued that both leader visibility and invisibility are important for the facilitation of trusting collaboration via distributed leadership. Active vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) and bone health in middle-aged and elderly men: the European male aging study (EMAS)
<p>Context: There is little information on the potential impact of serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] on bone health including turnover.</p>
<p>Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the influence of 1,25(OH)2D and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] on bone health in middle-aged and older European men.</p>
<p>Design, Setting, and Participants: Men aged 40–79 years were recruited from population registers in 8 European centers. Subjects completed questionnaires that included questions concerning lifestyle and were invited to attend for quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the heel, assessment of height and weight, and a fasting blood sample from which 1,25(OH)2D, 25(OH)D, and PTH were measured. 1,25(OH)2D was measured using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Bone markers serum N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP) and crosslinks (β-cTX) were also measured. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the hip and lumbar spine was performed in 2 centers.</p>
<p>Main Outcome Measure(s): QUS of the heel, bone markers P1NP and β-cTX, and DXA of the hip and lumbar spine were measured.</p>
<p>Results: A total of 2783 men, mean age 60.0 years (SD 11.0) were included in the analysis. After adjustment for age and center, 1,25(OH)2D was positively associated with 25(OH)D but not with PTH. 25(OH)D was negatively associated with PTH. After adjustment for age, center, height, weight, lifestyle factors, and season, 1,25(OH)2D was associated negatively with QUS and DXA parameters and associated positively with β-cTX. 1,25(OH)2D was not correlated with P1NP. 25(OH)D was positively associated with the QUS and DXA parameters but not related to either bone turnover marker. Subjects with both high 1,25(OH)2D (upper tertile) and low 25(OH)D (lower tertile) had the lowest QUS and DXA parameters and the highest β-cTX levels.</p>
<p>Conclusions: Serum 1,25(OH)2D is associated with higher bone turnover and poorer bone health despite being positively related to 25(OH)D. A combination of high 1,25(OH)2D and low 25(OH)D is associated with the poorest bone health.</p>
Living with a Hereditary Form of Cancer: Experiences and Needs of MEN 2 Patients and Their Families
Unlike the purely medical research done in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) families, little work has been done on the psychosocial aspects of the disease. To assess the severely stressful influences and the consequences of that stress on the family network, a small-scale survey was carried out during a national meeting. The goal of the study was to obtain more information about the experiences and needs of MEN 2 patients and their relatives. Of the 59 respondents, 85% were satisfied with the medical information provided, 81% were satisfied with the medical knowledge of the specialist, but only 12% were satisfied with the medical knowledge of the general practitioner regarding MEN 2. Furthermore, 63% of the parents had difficulties in talking about the disease with their children. The need expressed for contact with fellow sufferers and their families is expected to lead to the establishment of an interest group for MEN 2 families

Lock-in detection for pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance
We show that in pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance (pEDMR)
signal modulation in combination with a lock-in detection scheme can reduce the
low-frequency noise level by one order of magnitude and in addition removes the
microwave-induced non-resonant background. This is exemplarily demonstrated for
spin-echo measurements in phosphorus-doped Silicon. The modulation of the
signal is achieved by cycling the phase of the projection pulse used in pEDMR

Electrostatic inactivation of RNA viruses at air-water and liquid-liquid interfaces
Understanding the interactions between viruses and surfaces or interfaces is
important, as they provide the principles underpinning the cleaning and
disinfection of contaminated surfaces. Yet, the physics of such interactions is
currently poorly understood. For instance, there are longstanding experimental
observations suggesting that the presence of air-water interfaces can
generically inactivate and kill viruses, yet the mechanism underlying this
phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use theory and simulations to show that
electrostatics provides one such mechanism, and that this is very general.
Thus, we predict that the free energy of an RNA virus should increase by
several thousands of as the virion breaches an air-water interface. We
also show that the fate of a virus approaching a generic liquid-liquid
interface depends strongly on the detailed balance between interfacial and
electrostatic forces, which can be tuned, for instance, by choosing different
media to contact a virus-laden respiratory droplet. We propose that these
results can be used to design effective strategies for surface disinfection.
Intriguingly, tunability requires electrostatic and interfacial forces to scale
similarly with viral size, which naturally occurs when charges are arranged in
a double-shell distribution as in RNA viruses like influenza and all

Development of hierarchy and rank effects in weaned growing rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus)
[EN] Aggression among growing rabbits reduces production efficiency, and negatively affects the animal s welfare. Understanding hierarchy development may improve its predictive value with regard to differential access to resources and fitness. This could in turn lead to measures to reduce aggression. This study quantifies the development of a hierarchy among small groups of same-age rabbits kept in high density. We describe the development of the hierarchy in four mixed-sex groups formed after weaning at four weeks of age. The relationships between rank and aggressiveness, weight, sex and wound count were examined. To balance possible genetic effects, each group contained four full sibling dyads (N=8) with the male and female coming from the same litter (total N=32). Each group was housed in a wire mesh cage of 0.72 m² and was observed at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 wk of age. All activities of focal individuals were scored and antagonistic interactions among all group members were sampled continuously. For rank order analysis, submissive behaviours shown after receiving aggression were used. Females were heavier than males (3.2 kg vs 3.0 kg: wk 12); this difference was statistically significant from the sixth week onwards. Two of the four groups developed significantly linear hierarchies from the age of ten and twelve weeks onwards, respectively. In these two groups, rank order did not correlate with body weight, sex or wound count. The group with the steepest hierarchy had the highest number of wounds. The results show that growing rabbits can form linear hierarchies by 10 weeks of age, but this tendency differs strongly among groups. The male and female rabbits did not form separate hierarchies, in contrast to their natural tendencies. Effects of concurrent training on oxidative capacity in rat gastrocnemius muscle
PURPOSE: Training for improvement of oxidative capacity of muscle fibers may be attenuated when concurrently training for peak power. However, because of fiber type-specific recruitment, such attenuation may only account for high-oxidative muscle fibers. Here, we investigate the effects of concurrent training on oxidative capacity (as measured by succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity) by using task-specific recruitment of the high- and low-oxidative compartment of rat medial gastrocnemius muscle (GM). METHODS: Forty rats were subjected to 6 wk of peak power training (PT, n = 10), endurance training (ET, n = 10), concurrent peak power and endurance training (PET, n = 10), or no training (control, n = 10). SDH activity, mRNA expression of SDH, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), receptor-interacting protein 140, and BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa-interacting protein 3 as well as PGC-1α protein levels were analyzed in the low- and high-oxidative region of the GM. RESULTS: In the low-oxidative compartment, PT and PET induced a 30% decrease in SDH activity of Type IIB fibers compared with controls and ET (P < 0.001) without changes in mRNA or protein levels. In the high-oxidative compartment, after ET, SDH mRNA levels were 42% higher and RIP140 mRNA levels 33% lower compared with controls, which did not result in changes in SDH activity. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that in compartmentalized rat GM, peak power on top of endurance training attenuated transcription of mRNA for mitochondrial proteins in high-oxidative muscle fibers. In low-oxidative Type IIB fibers, peak power training substantially decreased SDH activity, which was not related to lower SDH mRNA levels. It is concluded that PT and PET enhanced mitochondrial degradation in the low-oxidative compartment of rat GM. Copyright © 2013 by the American College of Sports Medicine
