The Hosotani Mechanism in Bulk Gauge Theories with an Orbifold Extra Space S^1/Z_2
We pursue the possibility of the scenario in which the Higgs field is
identified with the extra-space component of a bulk gauge field. The space-time
we take is M S/Z. We show that a non-trivial
Z-parity assignment allows some of the extra-space component to have
radiatively induced VEV, which strongly modifies the mass spectrum and gauge
symmetry of the theory, realized by oribifolding. In particular we investigate
the dynamical mass generation of zero-mode fermion and spontaneous gauge
symmetry breaking due to the VEV. The gauge theories we adopt are a prototype
model SU(2) and SU(3) model, of special interest as the realistic minimal
scheme to incorporate the standard model SU(2) U(1).Comment: 16 pages 3 figure
Quantum random number generation for 1.25 GHz quantum key distribution systems
Security proofs of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems usually assume that
the users have access to source of perfect randomness. State-of-the-art QKD
systems run at frequencies in the GHz range, requiring a sustained GHz rate of
generation and acquisition of quantum random numbers. In this paper we
demonstrate such a high speed random number generator. The entropy source is
based on amplified spontaneous emission from an erbium-doped fibre, which is
directly acquired using a standard small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module.
The module connects to the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) of a QKD
system. A real-time randomness extractor is implemented in the FPGA and
achieves a sustained rate of 1.25 Gbps of provably random bits.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Psychologists Collaborating With Clergy
If a patient adheres to religious values and practices, should the treating psychologist get input from a clergyperson? How frequent is clergy-psychologist collaboration? What obstacles impede such collaboration? An exploratory survey questionnaire was sent to 200 clergy, 200 psychologists interested in religious issues, and 200 psychologists selected without regard to religious interests or values. Four themes were assessed: types of collaborative activities, frequency of collaboration, obstacles to collaboration, and ways to enhance collaboration. Strategies for promoting clergy-psychologist collaboration include challenging unidirectional referral assumptions, building trust through proximity and familiarity, and considering the importance of shared values and beliefs
Learning Points and Routes to Recommend Trajectories
The problem of recommending tours to travellers is an important and broadly
studied area. Suggested solutions include various approaches of
points-of-interest (POI) recommendation and route planning. We consider the
task of recommending a sequence of POIs, that simultaneously uses information
about POIs and routes. Our approach unifies the treatment of various sources of
information by representing them as features in machine learning algorithms,
enabling us to learn from past behaviour. Information about POIs are used to
learn a POI ranking model that accounts for the start and end points of tours.
Data about previous trajectories are used for learning transition patterns
between POIs that enable us to recommend probable routes. In addition, a
probabilistic model is proposed to combine the results of POI ranking and the
POI to POI transitions. We propose a new F score on pairs of POIs that
capture the order of visits. Empirical results show that our approach improves
on recent methods, and demonstrate that combining points and routes enables
better trajectory recommendations
Multiphoton entanglement through a Bell multiport beam splitter
Multiphoton entanglement is an important resource for linear optics quantum
computing. Here we show that a wide range of highly entangled multiphoton
states, including W-states, can be prepared by interfering single photons
inside a Bell multiport beam splitter and using postselection. A successful
state preparation is indicated by the collection of one photon per output port.
An advantage of the Bell multiport beam splitter is that it redirects the
photons without changing their inner degrees of freedom. The described setup
can therefore be used to generate polarisation, time-bin and frequency
multiphoton entanglement, even when using only a single photon source.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, carefully revised version, references adde
An almost isotropic cosmic microwave temperature does not imply an almost isotropic universe
In this letter we will show that, contrary to what is widely believed, an
almost isotropic cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature does not imply
that the universe is ``close to a Friedmann-Lemaitre universe''. There are two
important manifestations of anisotropy in the geometry of the universe, (i) the
anisotropy in the overall expansion, and (ii) the intrinsic anisotropy of the
gravitational field, described by the Weyl curvature tensor, although the
former usually receives more attention than the latter in the astrophysical
literature. Here we consider a class of spatially homogeneous models for which
the anisotropy of the CMB temperature is within the current observational
limits but whose Weyl curvature is not negligible, i.e. these models are not
close to isotropy even though the CMB temperature is almost isotropic.Comment: 5 pages (AASTeX, aaspp4.sty), submitted to Astrophysical Journal

Can We See Lorentz-Violating Vector Fields in the CMB?
We investigate the perturbation theory of a fixed-norm, timelike
Lorentz-violating vector field. After consistently quantizing the vector field
to put constraints on its parameters, we compute the primordial spectra of
perturbations generated by inflation in the presence of this vector field. We
find that its perturbations are sourced by the perturbations of the inflaton;
without the inflaton perturbation the vector field perturbations decay away
leaving no primordial spectra of perturbations. Since the inflaton perturbation
does not have a spin-1 component, the vector field generically does not
generate any spin-1 ``vector-type'' perturbations. Nevertheless, it will modify
the amplitude of both the spin-0 ``scalar-type'' and spin-2 ``tensor-type''
perturbation spectra, leading to violations of the inflationary consistency
relationship.Comment: 36 pages, 1 fig, RevTex4, Submitted to PR
