Measurement of Unsteady Flows in Mercury with Hot-Film Anemometers

    Get PDF
The difficulties in making turbulence measurements in liquid metals are discussed briefly. Attention is then focused on the problem of frequency response attenuation of hot-film anemometers by the thermal capacity of the thermal boundary layer near cylindrical sensors. A solution is given to the problem of heat transfer from an infinite cylinder normal to the potential flow of a fluid with a small sinusoidal velocity component. Application of the results to anemometer measurements is discussed. Some preliminary experiments on dynamic calibration are reported, and they are in reasonable agreement with the theory for Peclet numbers less than one

    Liquefaction Characteristics of Undisturbed Soils

    Get PDF
Undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed on undisturbed samples of natural soil deposits in order to investigate some of the factors affecting its liquefaction characteristics. It was shown that when the cyclic deviator stress is normalized with respect to major principal effective stress the number of cycles to liquefaction is not affected by sample size, consolidation stress, anisotropic consolidation, and grain size and density variations. However, liquefaction resistance was markedly increased by increasing over-consolidation ratio and aging. Also, sample disturbance of loose soils results in an increase, or unconservative measurement, of liquefaction resistance

Influence of blade aerodynamic model on the prediction of helicopter high-frequency airloads

Brown’s vorticity transport model has been used to investigate the influence of the blade aerodynamic model on the accuracy with which the high-frequency airloads associated with helicopter blade–vortex interactions can be predicted. The model yields an accurate representation of the wake structure yet allows significant flexibility in the way that the blade loading can be represented. A simple lifting-line model and a somewhat more sophisticated liftingchord model, based on unsteady thin aerofoil theory, are compared. A marked improvement in the accuracy of the predicted high-frequency airloads of the higher harmonic control aeroacoustic rotor is obtained when the liftingchord model is used instead of the lifting-line approach, and the quality of the prediction is affected less by the computational resolution of the wake. The lifting-line model overpredicts the amplitude of the lift response to blade–vortex interactions as the computational grid is refined, exposing the fundamental deficiencies in this approach when modeling the aerodynamic response of the blade to interactions with vortices that are much smaller than its chord. The airloads that are predicted using the lifting-chord model are relatively insensitive to the resolution of the computation, and there are fundamental reasons to believe that properly converged numerical solutions may be attainable using this approach

Synthesis and Control of Flexible Systems with Component-Level Uncertainties

    Get PDF
An efficient and computationally robust method for synthesis of component dynamics is developed. The method defines the interface forces/moments as feasible vectors in transformed coordinates to ensure that connectivity requirements of the combined structure are met. The synthesized system is then defined in a transformed set of feasible coordinates. The simplicity of form is exploited to effectively deal with modeling parametric and non-parametric uncertainties at the substructure level. Uncertainty models of reasonable size and complexity are synthesized for the combined structure from those in the substructure models. In particular, we address frequency and damping uncertainties at the component level. The approach first considers the robustness of synthesized flexible systems. It is then extended to deal with non-synthesized dynamic models with component-level uncertainties by projecting uncertainties to the system level. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach

    A scheme for symmetrization verification

We propose a scheme for symmetrization verification in two-particle systems, based on one-particle detection and state determination. In contrast to previous proposals, it does not follow a Hong-Ou-Mandel-type approach. Moreover, the technique can be used to generate superposition states of single particles

MATURATION EFFECTS ON LOWER EXTREMITY KINEMATICS IN A DROP VERTICAL JUMP

    Get PDF
As children increase in biologic age, body height and weight increase, and subsequent maturation of the nervous, endocrine, muscular, and cardiovascular systems leads to alterations in neuromuscular performance (Naughton et al., 2000). It is important to understand the effects of growth and development on sports performance and sports injuries. The purpose of this study were to investigate maturation effects on lower extremity kinematics in a drop vertical jump
