The Impact of Accurate Extinction Measurements for X-ray Spectral Models

Interstellar extinction includes both absorption and scattering of photons from interstellar gas and dust grains, and it has the effect of altering a source's spectrum and its total observed intensity. However, while multiple absorption models exist, there are no useful scattering models in standard X-ray spectrum fitting tools, such as XSPEC. Nonetheless, X-ray halos, created by scattering from dust grains, are detected around even moderately absorbed sources and the impact on an observed source spectrum can be significant, if modest, compared to direct absorption. By convolving the scattering cross section with dust models, we have created a spectral model as a function of energy, type of dust, and extraction region that can be used with models of direct absorption. This will ensure the extinction model is consistent and enable direct connections to be made between a source's X-ray spectral fits and its UV/optical extinction.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Interactions of shiga-like toxin-2 (Stx-2) from Escherichia coli O157:H7 and the Bcl-2 family of proteins during host cell programmed cell death

Stx-2 is a major contributor to the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli 0157:H7. Prior reports suggest that Stx-2 increases necrosis and apoptosis of a variety of host cells including those of endothelial origin as well as immune cells such as neutrophils (156). However, the role Stx-2 plays in delayed apoptosis of neutrophils is not fully understood given that previous studies have shown conflicting results (118, 51). The process of apoptosis is mediated by the Bcl-2 protein family (2, 46, 226). The purpose of this research was to define the molecular mechanisms of Stx-2 and Bcl-2 protein family interactions. These studies examined the binding of Stx-2 to select Bcl-2 family proteins, and outlined the effects that Stx-2 and a newly generated mutant of Stx-2 have on neutrophil apoptosis and necrosis rates as well as on caspase-8 and caspase-9 activation. Stx-2 did not bind to the select Bcl-2 family proteins examined nor did it consistently show decreased apoptosis rates in neutrophils. The mechanisms behind Stx-2-induced neutrophil apoptosis potentially involved the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and/or interactions with other Bcl-2 family members such as Bak at the mitochondrial membrane therefore inducing mitochondrial membrane permeabilization (MMP) and its downstream effects

Borders and Blood Pressure: Understanding the Role of Acculturation in a Hypertension Diagnosis Among Hispanic Americans: 2014 California Health Interview Survey

Background: In the U.S. Hispanic population overall, heart disease is the leading cause of death. The prevalence of hypertension among Mexican American immigrants is lower than the general population, yet it is on the rise. Health risks among Hispanics vary depending on their length of stay in the US (as proxy measure of acculturation). The purpose of this study was to examine the association between acculturation and the individual\u27s likelihood of being diagnosed with hypertension among Hispanic Americans. Methods: We used data from the 2014 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) and performed univariate analysis to examine racial differences in prevalence of hypertension. We also performed a multivariate logistic regression to identify if acculturation was significantly related to hypertension diagnoses, after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, level of education, marital status), access to care, and health status (e.g., self-reported health status, BMI), among Mexican Americans and all Hispanics, respectively. Results: Of 3,793 Hispanic American participating in the survey, 81.8% were Mexican Americans and 18.2% were other Hispanics. The prevalence of hypertension among Hispanic was 24.0% (95% CI: 21.5%. 26.7%) which was lower than that of African Americans (39.2%, 95% CI 33.7%, 44.9%) and White (30.2%, 95% CI: 28.5%, 31.9%). In multivariate analyses, acculturation was associated with hypertension among Mexican Americans, but not all Hispanics. For both Mexican Americans and Hispanics, age, health status and BMI were associated with having hypertension: Older people, those with poor health status, and overweight and obese people were more likely than their comparison groups to have hypertension. Those without health insurance were less likely to have hypertension. Conclusion: The results show a positive association between length of time in the United States for longer periods of time, and a diagnosis of hypertension. These results, along with others conducted around Hispanic American immigration, acculturation and chronic disease prevalence, help medical providers, to understand the effects of acculturation on specific health care needs among immigrants, and offer suggestions to patients which are culturally sensitive and relevant. Pemerintah Daerah berkewajiban memberikan pelayanan kesehatan yang bermutu dan terjangkau untuk segenap lapisan masyarakat untuk mencapai tujuan pembangunan kesehatannya.Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kebijakan tata ruang Kota Serang di bidang kesehatan, pemerataan lokasi fasilitas kesehatan dan kinerja pelayanan kesehatan serta apa pengaruh pelayanan kesehatan terhadap derajat kesehatan. Kebijakan tata ruang mengambil dari RPJMD Kota Serang tahun 2008-2013 dibidang kesehatan adalah meningkatkan kapasitas fasilitas dan manajemen pelayanan kesehatan serta SDM Tenaga Kesehatan, meningkatkan akses masyarakat terhadap pelayanan kesehatan yang bermutu dan terjangkau dan meningkatkan kualitas kesehatan lingkungan dan perilaku hidup sehat masyarakat. Sarana fasilitas kesehatan yang ada di Kota Serang adalah rumah sakit, puskesmas, balai pengobatan, polindes, poskesdes, klinik, posyandu, apotik dan pos obat. Penilaian kinerja pelayanan kesehatan berdasarkan pada persepsi masyarakat melalui hasil dari kuesioner dengan membagi tiga kelompok yakni:tingkat pemahaman masyarakat, faktor pendukung dan faktor pendorong. Closed-loop management of inpatient hyperglycemia.

The prevalence of diabetes in the hospital is increasing and approximately 18-20% of hospital beds are occupied by someone with diabetes [1]. Diabetes disproportionally affects the elderly, with three times greater prevalence in hospitalised people aged over 65 years than in those aged under 45 years [2]. Maintaining near normoglycaemia during hospital admissions can be very challenging. The impact of the current illness, medication changes, alterations to meal timings and intake, and requirement for nutrition support in hospital can all contribute to sub-optimal glucose control. Efektivitas Jus Jambu Biji terhadap Perubahan Kadar Hb pada Ibu Hamil Trimester III di Wilayah Kerja Puskesmas Bacem Kabupaten Blitar Tahun 2015

Based on data the number of pregnant women suffer from anemia as much as 19,4%.  The goal of this research is to know  the effectiveness guava juice toward the changing of Hb level among pregnant mothers in the third semester.  The research design is quasi experiment.The population are all of the pregnant women in third semester with 43 mothers. By using purposive sampling technique, it was got 32 respondents. The data were analyzed by T-test dependent and T-test independent. The result of this research  showed that there is difference Hb level with significance value (2-tailed) 0.00 < 0.05. After intervention the increasing of Hb level in control group is 0.5 gr/dl , while in treatment group the average increasing is 1.04 gr/dl. The difference of Hb level in average is  0.5438 gr/dl. Suggested  for the pregnant mothers who consuming Fe tablet, they also should consume guava juice so the absorption of iron can be optimal
