Enhanced Andreev reflection in gapped graphene

We theoretically demonstrate unusual features of superconducting proximity effect in gapped graphene which presents a pseudospin symmetry-broken ferromagnet with a net pseudomagnetization. We find that the presence of a band gap makes the Andreev conductance of graphene superconductor/pseudoferromagnet (S/PF) junction to behave similar to that of a graphene ferromagnet-superconductor junction. The energy gap ΔN\Delta_N enhance the pseudospin inverted Andreev conductance of S/PF junction to reach a limiting maximum value for ΔNμ\Delta_N\gg \mu, which depending on the bias voltage can be larger than the value for the corresponding junction with no energy gap. We further demonstrate a damped-oscillatory behavior for the local density of states of the PF region of S/PF junction and a long-range crossed Andreev reflection process in PF/S/PF structure with antiparallel alignment of pseudomagnetizations of PFs, which confirm that, in this respect, the gapped normal graphene behaves like a ferromagnetic graphene.Comment: 7.2 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. A PCR-free, optics-free device is used for the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) 16S rRNA at 10 fM, which corresponds to ~100-1000 colony forming units/mL (CFU/mL) depending on cellular rRNA levels. The development of a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective nucleic acid detection platform is sought for the detection of pathogenic microbes in food, water and body fluids. Since 16S rRNA sequences are species specific and are present at high copy number in viable cells, these nucleic acids offer an attractive target for microbial pathogen detection schemes. Here, target 16S rRNA of E. coli at 10 fM concentration was detected against a total RNA background using a conceptually simple approach based on electromechanical signal transduction, whereby a step change reduction in ionic current through a pore indicates blockage by an electrophoretically mobilized bead-peptide nucleic acid probe conjugate hybridized to target nucleic acid. We investigated the concentration detection limit for bacterial species-specific 16S rRNA at 1 pM to 1 fM and found a limit of detection of 10 fM for our device, which is consistent with our previous finding with single-stranded DNA of similar length. In addition, no false positive responses were obtained with control RNA and no false negatives with target 16S rRNA present down to the limit of detection (LOD) of 10 fM. Thus, this detection scheme shows promise for integration into portable, low-cost systems for rapid detection of pathogenic microbes in food, water and body fluids

PURPOSE: To examine ondansetron use in pregnancy in the context of other antiemetic use among a large insured United States population of women delivering live births. METHODS: We assessed ondansetron and other antiemetic use among pregnant women delivering live births between 2001 and 2015 in 15 data partners contributing data to the Mini-Sentinel Distributed Database. We identified live birth pregnancies using a validated algorithm, and all forms of ondansetron and other available antiemetics were identified using National Drug Codes or procedure codes. We assessed the prevalence of antiemetic use by trimester, calendar year, and formulation. RESULTS: In over 2.3 million pregnancies, the prevalence of ondansetron, promethazine, metoclopramide, or doxylamine/pyridoxine use anytime in pregnancy was 15.2, 10.3, 4.0, and 0.4%, respectively. Ondansetron use increased from \u3c1% of pregnancies in 2001 to 22.2% in 2014, with much of the increase attributable to oral ondansetron beginning in 2006. Promethazine and metoclopramide use increased modestly between 2001 (13.8%, 3.2%) and 2006 (16.0%, 6.0%) but decreased annually through 2014 (8.0%, 3.2%). Doxylamine/pyridoxine, approved for management of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy in 2013, was used in 1.8% of pregnancies in 2014. For all antiemetics, use was highest in the first trimester. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a marked increase in ondansetron use by study year, prescribed to nearly one-quarter of insured pregnant women in 2014, occurring in conjunction with decreased use of promethazine and metoclopramide. Given the widespread use of ondansetron in pregnancy, data establishing product efficacy and methodologically rigorous evaluation of post-marketing safety are needed

Monosomal Karyotype at the Time of Diagnosis or Transplantation Predicts Outcomes of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Myelodysplastic Syndrome

AbstractVarious cytogenetic risk scoring systems may determine prognosis for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We evaluated 4 different risk scoring systems in predicting outcome after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). We classified 124 patients with MDS using the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS), the revised International Prognostic Scoring System (R-IPSS), Armand's transplantation-specific cytogenetic grouping, and monosomal karyotype (MK) both at the time of diagnosis and at alloHCT. After adjusting for other important factors, MK at diagnosis (compared with no MK) was associated with poor 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) (27% [95% confidence interval, 12% to 42%] versus 39% [95% confidence interval, 28% to 50%], P = .02) and overall survival (OS) (29% [95% confidence interval, 14% to 44%] versus 47% [95% confidence interval, 36% to 59%], P = .02). OS but not DFS was affected by MK at alloHCT. MK frequency was uncommon in low-score R-IPPS and IPSS. Although IPSS and R-IPSS discriminated good/very good groups from poor/very poor groups, patients with intermediate-risk scores had the worst outcomes and, therefore, these scores did not show a progressive linear discriminating trend. Cytogenetic risk score change between diagnosis and alloHCT was uncommon and did not influence OS. MK cytogenetics in MDS are associated with poor survival, suggesting the need for alternative or intensified approaches to their treatment

Time-series of abundance indices of deep sea demersal resources (501-800m) derived by the MEDITS trawl survey in the Strait of Sicily (GSA 16) were analysed by aggregated taxa (bony fish, cartilaginous fish, cephalopods and crustaceans) and species using a polynomial approach. The results showed a significant increasing trend of the cartilaginous fish and cephalopods, in terms of biomass (kg/km) and density (n/Km) indices, whereas temporal pattern in bony fish and crustaceans resulted not significant. Helicolenus dactylopterus, Hoplostetus mediterraneus, Galeus melastomus, Nephrops norvegicus and Aristaeomorpha foliacea showed significant trends in both number and weight, whereas Aristeus antennatus, Etmopterus spinax and Chimera monstrosa only in biomass. This work was carried out within the Data Collection Regulation and Framework - module trawl surveys MEDITS funded by European Union and the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.peer-reviewe
