Long-Term Profile Variability of Double-Peaked Emmission Lines in AGNs
An increasing number of AGNs exhibit broad, double-peaked Balmer emission
lines, which arise from the outer regions of the accretion disk which fuels the
AGN. The line profiles vary on timescales of 5--10 years. Our group has
monitored a set of 20 double-peaked emitters for the past 8 years (longer for
some objects). Here we describe a project to characterize the variability
patterns of the double-peaked H alpha line profiles and compare with those of

A piloted simulation of helicopter air combat to investigate effects of variations in selected performance and control response characteristics
A piloted simulation study investigating handling qualities and flight characteristics required for helicopter air to air combat is presented. The Helicopter Air Combat system was used to investigate this role for Army rotorcraft. Experimental variables were the maneuver envelope size (load factor and sideslip), directional axis handling qualities, and pitch and roll control-response type. Over 450 simulated, low altitude, one-on-one engagements were conducted. Results from the experiment indicate that a well damped directional response, low sideforce caused by sideslip, and some effective dihedral are all desirable for weapon system performance, good handling qualities, and low pilot workload. An angular rate command system was favored over the attitude type pitch and roll response for most applications, and an enhanced maneuver envelope size over that of current generation aircraft was found to be advantageous. Pilot technique, background, and experience are additional factors which had a significant effect on performance in the air combat tasks investigated. The implication of these results on design requirements for future helicopters is presented
Deuterium Abundance in the Most Metal-Poor Damped Lyman alpha System: Converging on Omega_baryons
The most metal-poor DLA known to date, at z = 2.61843 in the spectrum of the
QSO Q0913+072, with an oxygen abundance only about 1/250 of the solar value,
shows six well resolved D I Lyman series transitions in high quality echelle
spectra recently obtained with the ESO VLT. We deduce a value of the deuterium
abundance log (D/H) = -4.56+/-0.04 which is in good agreement with four out of
the six most reliable previous determinations of this ratio in QSO absorbers.
We find plausible reasons why in the other two cases the 1 sigma errors may
have been underestimated by about a factor of two. The addition of this latest
data point does not change significantly the mean value of the primordial
abundance of deuterium, suggesting that we are now converging to a reliable
measure of this quantity. We conclude that = -4.55+/-0.03 and
Omega_b h^2 (BBN) = 0.0213+/-0.0010 (68% confidence limits). Including the
latter as a prior in the analysis of the five year data of WMAP leads to a
revised best-fitting value of the power-law index of primordial fluctuations
n_s = 0.956+/-0.013 (1 sigma) and n_s < 0.990 with 99% confidence. Considering
together the constraints provided by WMAP 5, (D/H)_p, baryon oscillations in
the galaxy distribution, and distances to Type Ia supernovae, we arrive at the
current best estimates Omega_b h^2 = 0.0224+/-0.0005 and n_s = 0.959+/-0.013.Comment: 13 pages, 8 Figures. Revised version following referee's comments.

The variation in morphology of perennial ryegrass cultivars throughout the grazing season and effects on organic matter digestibility
peer-reviewedThe grass plant comprises leaf, pseudostem, true stem (including inflorescence) and dead material. These components differ in digestibility, and variations in their relative proportions can affect sward quality. The objective of this study was to determine the change in the proportion and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead components of four perennial ryegrass cultivars (two tetraploids: Astonenergy and Bealey and two diploids: Abermagic and Spelga) throughout a grazing season. The DM proportions and in vitro OMD of leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead in all cultivars were determined during ten grazing rotations between May 2011 and March 2012. There was an interaction between rotation and cultivar for leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead proportions. In May and June, Astonenergy had the highest leaf and lowest true stem proportion (P pseudostem > true stem > dead. Bealey had the highest combined leaf and pseudostem proportion 0·92, which explains why it had the highest OMD. In this study, the tetraploid cultivars had the highest leaf and pseudostem proportion and OMD. For accurate descriptions of a sward in grazing studies and to accurately determine sward morphological composition, pseudostem should be separated from true stem, particularly during the reproductive stage when true stem is present
Optical Spectral Properties of Swift BAT Hard X-ray Selected Active Galactic Nuclei Sources
The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN)
is providing an unprecedented view of local AGNs ( = 0.03) and their host
galaxy properties. In this paper, we present an analysis of the optical spectra
of a sample of 64 AGNs from the 9-month survey, detected solely based on their
14-195 keV flux. Our analysis includes both archived spectra from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey and our own observations from the 2.1-m Kitt Peak National
Observatory telescope. Among our results, we include line ratio classifications
utilizing standard emission line diagnostic plots, [O III] 5007 A luminosities,
and H-beta derived black hole masses. As in our X-ray study, we find the type 2
sources to be less luminous (in [O III] 5007 A and 14-195 keV luminosities)
with lower accretion rates than the type 1 sources. We find that the optically
classified LINERs, H II/composite galaxies, and ambiguous sources have the
lowest luminosities, while both broad line and narrow line Seyferts have
similar luminosities. From a comparison of the hard X-ray (14-195 keV) and [O
III] luminosities, we find that both the observed and extinction-corrected [O
III] luminosities are weakly correlated with X-ray luminosity. In a study of
the host galaxy properties from both continuum fits and measurements of the
stellar absorption indices, we find that the hosts of the narrow line sources

Gastrointestinal tract size, total-tract digestibility, and rumen microflora in different dairy cow genotypes
peer-reviewedThe superior milk production efficiency of Jersey (JE) and Jersey × Holstein-Friesian (JE × HF) cows compared with Holstein-Friesian (HF) has been widely published. The biological differences among dairy cow genotypes, which could contribute to the milk production efficiency differences, have not been as widely studied however. A series of component studies were conducted using cows sourced from a longer-term genotype comparison study (JE, JE × HF, and HF). The objectives were to (1) determine if differences exist among genotypes regarding gastrointestinal tract (GIT) weight, (2) assess and quantify whether the genotypes tested differ in their ability to digest perennial ryegrass, and (3) examine the relative abundance of specific rumen microbial populations potentially relating to feed digestibility. Over 3 yr, the GIT weight was obtained from 33 HF, 35 JE, and 27 JE × HF nonlactating cows postslaughter. During the dry period the cows were offered a perennial ryegrass silage diet at maintenance level. The unadjusted GIT weight was heavier for the HF than for JE and JE × HF. When expressed as a proportion of body weight (BW), JE and JE × HF had a heavier GIT weight than HF. In vivo digestibility was evaluated on 16 each of JE, JE × HF, and HF lactating dairy cows. Cows were individually stalled, allowing for the total collection of feces and were offered freshly cut grass twice daily. During this time, daily milk yield, BW, and dry matter intake (DMI) were greater for HF and JE × HF than for JE; milk fat and protein concentration ranked oppositely. Daily milk solids yield did not differ among the 3 genotypes. Intake capacity, expressed as DMI per BW, tended to be different among treatments, with JE having the greatest DMI per BW, HF the lowest, and JE × HF being intermediate. Production efficiency, expressed as milk solids per DMI, was higher for JE than HF and JE × HF. Digestive efficiency, expressed as digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, N, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, was higher for JE than HF. In grazing cows (n = 15 per genotype) samples of rumen fluid, collected using a transesophageal sampling device, were analyzed to determine the relative abundance of rumen microbial populations of cellulolytic bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. These are critically important for fermentation of feed into short-chain fatty acids. A decrease was observed in the relative abundance of Ruminococcus flavefaciens in the JE rumen compared with HF and JE × HF. We can deduce from this study that the JE genotype has greater digestibility and a different rumen microbial population than HF. Jersey and JE × HF cows had a proportionally greater GIT weight than HF. These differences are likely to contribute to the production efficiency differences among genotypes previously reported

Chromosomal instability in untreated primary prostate cancer as an indicator of metastatic potential.
BackgroundMetastatic prostate cancer (PC) is highly lethal. The ability to identify primary tumors capable of dissemination is an unmet need in the quest to understand lethal biology and improve patient outcomes. Previous studies have linked chromosomal instability (CIN), which generates aneuploidy following chromosomal missegregation during mitosis, to PC progression. Evidence of CIN includes broad copy number alterations (CNAs) spanning > 300 base pairs of DNA, which may also be measured via RNA expression signatures associated with CNA frequency. Signatures of CIN in metastatic PC, however, have not been interrogated or well defined. We examined a published 70-gene CIN signature (CIN70) in untreated and castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and previously published reports. We also performed transcriptome and CNA analysis in a unique cohort of untreated primary tumors collected from diagnostic prostate needle biopsies (PNBX) of localized (M0) and metastatic (M1) cases to determine if CIN was linked to clinical stage and outcome.MethodsPNBX were collected from 99 patients treated in the VA Greater Los Angeles (GLA-VA) Healthcare System between 2000 and 2016. Total RNA was extracted from high-grade cancer areas in PNBX cores, followed by RNA sequencing and/or copy number analysis using OncoScan. Multivariate logistic regression analyses permitted calculation of odds ratios for CIN status (high versus low) in an expanded GLA-VA PNBX cohort (n = 121).ResultsThe CIN70 signature was significantly enriched in primary tumors and CRPC metastases from M1 PC cases. An intersection of gene signatures comprised of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) generated through comparison of M1 versus M0 PNBX and primary CRPC tumors versus metastases revealed a 157-gene "metastasis" signature that was further distilled to 7-genes (PC-CIN) regulating centrosomes, chromosomal segregation, and mitotic spindle assembly. High PC-CIN scores correlated with CRPC, PC-death and all-cause mortality in the expanded GLA-VA PNBX cohort. Interestingly, approximately 1/3 of M1 PNBX cases exhibited low CIN, illuminating differential pathways of lethal PC progression.ConclusionsMeasuring CIN in PNBX by transcriptome profiling is feasible, and the PC-CIN signature may identify patients with a high risk of lethal progression at the time of diagnosis
Effects of self- and cross-phase modulation on the spontaneous symmetry breaking of light in ring resonators
We describe spontaneous symmetry breaking in the powers of two optical modes
coupled into a ring resonator, using a pair of coupled Lorentzian equations,
featuring tunable self- and cross-phase modulation terms. We investigate a wide
variety of nonlinear materials by changing the ratio of the self- and
cross-phase interaction coefficients. Static and dynamic effects range from the
number and stability of stationary states to the onset and nature of
oscillations. Minimal conditions to observe symmetry breaking are provided in
terms of the ratio of the self-/cross-phase coefficients, detuning, and input
power. Different ratios of the nonlinear coefficients also influence the
dynamical regime, where they can induce or suppress bifurcations and
oscillations. A generalised description on this kind is useful for the
development of all-optical components, such as isolators and oscillators,
constructed from a wide variety of optical media in ring resonators.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
