On Blowup for time-dependent generalized Hartree-Fock equations
We prove finite-time blowup for spherically symmetric and negative energy
solutions of Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov type equations, which
describe the evolution of attractive fermionic systems (e. g. white dwarfs).
Our main results are twofold: First, we extend the recent blowup result of
[Hainzl and Schlein, Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{287} (2009), 705--714] to
Hartree-Fock equations with infinite rank solutions and a general class of
Newtonian type interactions. Second, we show the existence of finite-time
blowup for spherically symmetric solutions of a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model,
where an angular momentum cutoff is introduced. We also explain the key
difficulties encountered in the full Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory.Comment: 24 page
A Catalog of Transient X-ray Sources in M31
From October 1999 to August 2002, 45 transient X-ray sources were detected in
M31 by Chandra and XMM-Newton. We have performed spectral analysis of all
XMM-Newton and Chandra ACIS detections of these sources, as well as flux
measurements of Chandra HRC detections. The result is absorption-corrected
X-ray lightcurves for these sources covering this 2.8 year period, along with
spectral parameters for several epochs of the outbursts of most of the
transient sources. We supply a catalog of the locations, outburst dates, peak
observed luminosities, decay time estimates, and spectral properties of the
transient sources, and we discuss similarities with Galactic X-ray novae. Duty
cycle estimates are possible for 8 of the transients and range from 40% to 2%;
upper limits to the duty cycles are estimated for an additional 15 transients
and cover a similar range. We find 5 transients which have rapid decay times
and may be ultra-compact X-ray binaries. Spectra of three of the transients
suggest they may be faint Galactic foreground sources. If even one is a
foreground source, this suggests a surface density of faint transient X-ray

Goal disruption theory, military personnel, and the creation of merged profiles: A mixed method investigation
The present study provides an example of the integrated data analysis technique of creating and interpreting merged profiles. By using this approach to merging data sources, we gained unique insight into goal disruption theory (GDT). Qualitative data suggest that military personnel harbor a wide range of desired end-states. Quantitative data support a component of GDT, suggesting that participants who have a strong need for desired end-state displayed greater purposive harm endurance. Interpretation of merged profiles revealed caveats to this relationship, in particular that not all end-states are equally motivating. Results illustrate the benefits of the integrated data analysis technique of creating and interpreting merged profiles. Utilization of the merged profiles illuminated relationships that would not have been exposed otherwise
Research Priorities for Achieving Healthy Marine Ecosystems and Human Communities in a Changing Climate
ABSTRACT: The health of coastal human communities and marine ecosystems are at risk from a host of anthropogenic stressors, in particular, climate change. Because ecological health and human well-being are inextricably connected, effective and positive responses to current risks require multidisciplinary solutions. Yet, the complexity of coupled social-ecological systems has left many potential solutions unidentified or insufficiently explored. The urgent need to achieve positive social and ecological outcomes across local and global scales necessitates rapid and targeted multidisciplinary research to identify solutions that have the greatest chance of promoting benefits for both people and nature. To address these challenges, we conducted a forecasting exercise with a diverse, multidisciplinary team to identify priority research questions needed to promote sustainable and just marine social-ecological systems now and into the future, within the context of climate change and population growth. In contrast to the traditional reactive cycle of science and management, we aimed to generate questions that focus on what we need to know, before we need to know it. Participants were presented with the question, "If we were managing oceans in 2050 and looking back, what research, primary or synthetic, would wish we had invested in today?" We first identified major social and ecological events over the past 60 years that shaped current human relationships with coasts and oceans. We then used a modified Delphi approach to identify nine priority research areas and 46 questions focused on increasing sustainability and well-being in marine social-ecological systems. The research areas we identified include relationships between ecological and human health, access to resources, equity, governance, economics, resilience, and technology. Most questions require increased collaboration across traditionally distinct disciplines and sectors for successful study and implementation. By identifying these questions, we hope to facilitate the discourse, research, and policies needed to rapidly promote healthy marine ecosystems and the human communities that depend upon them
Vaccinations in patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases
Patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) such as RA, IBD or psoriasis, are at increased risk of infection, partially because of the disease itself, but mostly because of treatment with immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive drugs. In spite of their elevated risk for vaccine-preventable disease, vaccination coverage in IMID patients is surprisingly low. This review summarizes current literature data on vaccine safety and efficacy in IMID patients treated with immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory drugs and formulates best-practice recommendations on vaccination in this population. Especially in the current era of biological therapies, including TNF-blocking agents, special consideration should be given to vaccination strategies in IMID patients. Clinical evidence indicates that immunization of IMID patients does not increase clinical or laboratory parameters of disease activity. Live vaccines are contraindicated in immunocompromized individuals, but non-live vaccines can safely be given. Although the reduced quality of the immune response in patients under immunotherapy may have a negative impact on vaccination efficacy in this population, adequate humoral response to vaccination in IMID patients has been demonstrated for hepatitis B, influenza and pneumococcal vaccination. Vaccination status is best checked and updated before the start of immunomodulatory therapy: live vaccines are not contraindicated at that time and inactivated vaccines elicit an optimal immune response in immunocompetent individuals
A second planet transiting LTT 1445A and a determination of the masses of both worlds
K.H. acknowledges support from STFC grant ST/R000824/1.LTT 1445 is a hierarchical triple M-dwarf star system located at a distance of 6.86 pc. The primary star LTT 1445A (0.257 Mâ) is known to host the transiting planet LTT 1445Ab with an orbital period of 5.36 days, making it the second-closest known transiting exoplanet system, and the closest one for which the host is an M dwarf. Using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data, we present the discovery of a second planet in the LTT 1445 system, with an orbital period of 3.12 days. We combine radial-velocity measurements obtained from the five spectrographs, Echelle Spectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observations, High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, High-Resolution Echelle Spectrometer, MAROON-X, and Planet Finder Spectrograph to establish that the new world also orbits LTT 1445A. We determine the mass and radius of LTT 1445Ab to be 2.87 ± 0.25 Mâ and 1.304-0.060+0.067 Râ, consistent with an Earth-like composition. For the newly discovered LTT 1445Ac, we measure a mass of 1.54-0.19+0.20 Mâ and a minimum radius of 1.15 Râ, but we cannot determine the radius directly as the signal-to-noise ratio of our light curve permits both grazing and nongrazing configurations. Using MEarth photometry and ground-based spectroscopy, we establish that star C (0.161 Mâ) is likely the source of the 1.4 day rotation period, and star B (0.215 Mâ) has a likely rotation period of 6.7 days. We estimate a probable rotation period of 85 days for LTT 1445A. Thus, this triple M-dwarf system appears to be in a special evolutionary stage where the most massive M dwarf has spun down, the intermediate mass M dwarf is in the process of spinning down, while the least massive stellar component has not yet begun to spin down.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
HIV-1 Viral loas assays for resource-limited settings
Tremendous strides have been made in treating HIV-1 infection in industrialized countries. Combination therapy with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs suppresses virus replication, delays disease progression, and reduces mortality. In industrialized settings, plasma viral load assays are used in combination with CD4 cell counts to determine when to initiate therapy and when a regimen is failing. In addition, unlike serologic assays, these assays may be used to diagnose perinatal or acute HIV-1 infection. Unfortunately, the full benefits of antiretroviral drugs and monitoring tests have not yet reached the majority of HIV-1-infected patients who live in countries with limited resources. In this article we discuss existing data on the performance of alternative viral load assays that might be useful in resource-limited settings
A complete set of nascent transcription rates for yeast genes
The amount of mRNA in a cell is the result of two opposite reactions: transcription and mRNA degradation. These reactions are governed by kinetics laws, and the most regulated step for many genes is the transcription rate. The transcription rate, which is assumed to be exercised mainly at the RNA polymerase recruitment level, can be calculated using the RNA polymerase densities determined either by run-on or immunoprecipitation using specific antibodies. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the ideal model organism to generate a complete set of nascent transcription rates that will prove useful for many gene regulation studies. By combining genomic data from both the GRO (Genomic Run-on) and the RNA pol ChIP-on-chip methods we generated a new, more accurate nascent transcription rate dataset. By comparing this dataset with the indirect ones obtained from the mRNA stabilities and mRNA amount datasets, we are able to obtain biological information about posttranscriptional regulation processes and a genomic snapshot of the location of the active transcriptional machinery. We have obtained nascent transcription rates for 4,670 yeast genes. The median RNA polymerase II density in the genes is 0.078 molecules/kb, which corresponds to an average of 0.096 molecules/gene. Most genes have transcription rates of between 2 and 30 mRNAs/hour and less than 1% of yeast genes have >1 RNA polymerase molecule/gene. Histone and ribosomal protein genes are the highest transcribed groups of genes and other than these exceptions the transcription of genes is an infrequent phenomenon in a yeast cell
A systematic review of different models of home and community care services for older persons
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Costs and consumer preference have led to a shift from the long-term institutional care of aged older people to home and community based care. The aim of this review is to evaluate the outcomes of case managed, integrated or consumer directed home and community care services for older persons, including those with dementia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A systematic review was conducted of non-medical home and community care services for frail older persons. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, AgeLine, Scopus and PubMed were searched from 1994 to May 2009. Two researchers independently reviewed search results.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty five papers were included in this review. Evidence from randomized controlled trials showed that case management improves function and appropriate use of medications, increases use of community services and reduces nursing home admission. Evidence, mostly from non-randomized trials, showed that integrated care increases service use; randomized trials reported that integrated care does not improve clinical outcomes. The lowest quality evidence was for consumer directed care which appears to increase satisfaction with care and community service use but has little effect on clinical outcomes. Studies were heterogeneous in methodology and results were not consistent.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The outcomes of each model of care differ and correspond to the model's focus. Combining key elements of all three models may maximize outcomes.</p
