The electrical current effect in phase separated La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3: Charge order melting vs. Joule heating
We have studied the effect of electric field on transport properties of the
prototypical phase separated manganite La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y=0.34. Our
results show that the suggested image in which the charge ordered state is
melted by the appliance of an electric current and/or voltage has to be
revised. We were able to explain the observed resistivity drop in terms of an
artifact related to Joule heating and the particular hysteresis that the system
under study display, common to many other phase separated manganites.Comment: 2 figures. Accepted in J. Appl. Phy
Microscopic theory of Cooper pair beam splitters based on carbon nanotubes
We analyze microscopically a Cooper pair splitting device in which a central
superconducting lead is connected to two weakly coupled normal leads through a
carbon nanotube. We determine the splitting efficiency at resonance in terms of
geometrical and material parameters, including the effect of spin-orbit
scattering. While the efficiency in the linear regime is limited to 50% and
decay exponentially as a function of the width of the superconducting region we
show that it can rise up to in the non-linear regime for certain
regions of the stability diagram.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Sources of sport confidence, imagery type and performance among competitive athletes: The mediating role of sports confidence
Aim: This study explored the mediating role of sport confidence upon (1) sources of sport confidence-performance relationship and (2) imagery-performance relationship. Methods: Participants were 157 competitive athletes who completed state measures of confidence level/sources, imagery type and performance within one hour after competition. Results: Among the current sample, confirmatory factor analysis revealed appropriate support for the nine-factor SSCQ and the five-factor SIQ. Mediational analysis revealed that sport confidence had a mediating influence upon the achievement source of confidence-performance relationship. In addition, both cognitive and motivational imagery types were found to be important sources of confidence, as sport confidence mediated imagery type-performance relationship. Conclusion: Findings indicated that athletes who construed confidence from their own achievements and report multiple images on a more frequent basis are likely to benefit from enhanced levels of state sport confidence and subsequent performance

Context unification is in PSPACE
Contexts are terms with one `hole', i.e. a place in which we can substitute
an argument. In context unification we are given an equation over terms with
variables representing contexts and ask about the satisfiability of this
equation. Context unification is a natural subvariant of second-order
unification, which is undecidable, and a generalization of word equations,
which are decidable, at the same time. It is the unique problem between those
two whose decidability is uncertain (for already almost two decades). In this
paper we show that the context unification is in PSPACE. The result holds under
a (usual) assumption that the first-order signature is finite.
This result is obtained by an extension of the recompression technique,
recently developed by the author and used in particular to obtain a new PSPACE
algorithm for satisfiability of word equations, to context unification. The
recompression is based on performing simple compression rules (replacing pairs
of neighbouring function symbols), which are (conceptually) applied on the
solution of the context equation and modifying the equation in a way so that
such compression steps can be in fact performed directly on the equation,
without the knowledge of the actual solution.Comment: 27 pages, submitted, small notation changes and small improvements

Characteristics of enzymatic induction provoked by chlordane
The effects of various stresses, such as restraint and lowering or raising of environmental temperature, in mice pretreated with chlordane were investigated. (Chlordane is an inhibitor of protein synthesis.) It was found that restraint or exposure to a cold environment for three hours mobilized the chlordane stored in the adipose tissue of mice
