    Theory of combined exciton-cyclotron resonance in a two-dimensional electron gas: The strong magnetic field regime

    I develop a theory of combined exciton-cyclotron resonance (ExCR) in a low-density two-dimensional electron gas in high magnetic fields. In the presence of excess electrons an incident photon creates an exciton and simultaneously excites one electron to higher-lying Landau levels. I derive exact ExCR selection rules that follow from the existing dynamical symmetries, magnetic translations and rotations about the magnetic field axis. The nature of the final states in the ExCR is elucidated. The relation between ExCR and shake-up processes is discussed.     Charged vortices in superfluid systems with pairing of spatially separated carriers

    It is shown that in a magnetic field the vortices in superfluid electron-hole systems carry a real electrical charge. The charge value depends on the relation between the magnetic length and the Bohr radiuses of electrons and holes. In double layer systems at equal electron and hole filling factors in the case of the electron and hole Bohr radiuses much larger than the magnetic length the vortex charge is equal to the universal value (electron charge times the filling factor).Comment: 4 page

    Critical Currents of Ideal Quantum Hall Superfluids

    Filling factor ν=1\nu=1 bilayer electron systems in the quantum Hall regime have an excitonic-condensate superfluid ground state when the layer separation dd is less than a critical value dcd_c. On a quantum Hall plateau current injected and removed through one of the two layers drives a dissipationless edge current that carries parallel currents, and a dissipationless bulk supercurrent that carries opposing currents in the two layers. In this paper we discuss the theory of finite supercurrent bilayer states, both in the presence and in the absence of symmetry breaking inter-layer hybridization. Solutions to the microscopic mean-field equations exist at all condensate phase winding rates for zero and sufficiently weak hybridization strengths. We find, however, that collective instabilities occur when the supercurrent exceeds a critical value determined primarily by a competition between direct and exchange inter-layer Coulomb interactions. The critical current is estimated using a local stability criterion and varies as (dcd)1/2(d_c-d)^{1/2} when dd approaches dcd_c from below. For large inter-layer hybridization, we find that the critical current is limited by a soliton instability of microscopic origin.Comment: 18 RevTeX pgs, 21 eps figure

    Under pressure: design and validation of a pressure-sensitive insole for ankle plantar flexion biofeedback during neuromuscular gait training

    Background: Electromyography (EMG)-based audiovisual biofeedback systems, developed and tested in research settings to train neuromuscular control in patient populations such as cerebral palsy (CP), have inherent implementation obstacles that may limit their translation to clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to design and validate an alternative, plantar pressure-based biofeedback system for improving ankle plantar flexor recruitment during walking in individuals with CP. Methods: Eight individuals with CP (11–18 years old) were recruited to test both an EMG-based and a plantar pressure-based biofeedback system while walking. Ankle plantar flexor muscle recruitment, co-contraction at the ankle, and lower limb kinematics were compared between the two systems and relative to baseline walking. Results: Relative to baseline walking, both biofeedback systems yielded significant increases in mean soleus (43–58%, p < 0.05), and mean (68–70%, p < 0.05) and peak (71–82%, p < 0.05) medial gastrocnemius activation, with no differences between the two systems and strong relationships for all primary outcome variables (R = 0.89–0.94). Ankle co-contraction significantly increased relative to baseline only with the EMG-based system (52%, p = 0.03).     Usability and performance validation of an ultra-lightweight and versatile untethered robotic ankle exoskeleton

    Background: Ankle exoskeletons can improve walking mechanics and energetics, but few untethered devices have demonstrated improved performance and usability across a wide range of users and terrains. Our goal was to design and validate a lightweight untethered ankle exoskeleton that was effective across moderate-to-high intensity ambulation in children through adults with and without walking impairment. Methods: Following benchtop validation of custom hardware, we assessed the group-level improvements in walking economy while wearing the device in a diverse unimpaired cohort (n = 6, body mass = 42–92 kg). We also conducted a maximal exertion experiment on a stair stepping machine in a small cohort of individuals with cerebral palsy (CP, n = 5, age = 11–33 years, GMFCS I-III, body mass = 40–71 kg). Device usability metrics (device don and setup times and System Usability Score) were assessed in both cohorts. Results: There was a 9.9 ± 2.6% (p = 0.012, range = 0–18%) reduction in metabolic power during exoskeleton-assisted inclined walking compared to no device in the unimpaired cohort. The cohort with CP was able to ascend 38.4 ± 23.6% (p = 0.013, range = 3–132%) more floors compared to no device without increasing metabolic power (p = 0.49) or perceived exertion (p = 0.50). Users with CP had mean device don and setup times of 3.5 ± 0.7 min and 28 ± 6 s, respectively. Unimpaired users had a mean don time of 1.5 ± 0.2 min and setup time of 14 ± 1 s. The average exoskeleton score on the System Usability Scale was 81.8 ± 8.4 (“excellent”). Conclusions: Our battery-powered ankle exoskeleton was easy to use for our participants, with initial evidence supporting effectiveness across different terrains for unimpaired adults, and children and adults with CP.     Feasibility evaluation of a dual-mode ankle exoskeleton to assist and restore community ambulation in older adults

    Background Age-related deficits in plantar flexor muscle function during the push-off phase of walking likely contribute to the decline in mobility that affects many older adults. New mobility aids and/or functional training interventions may help slow or prevent ambulatory decline in the elderly.Objective The overarching objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of using an untethered, dual-mode ankle exoskeleton as a mobility aid to reduce energy consumption, and as a resistive gait training tool to facilitate functional recruitment of the plantar flexor muscles.Methods We recruited six older adults (68-83 years old) to evaluate acute metabolic and neuromuscular adaption to ankle exoskeleton assistance and to evaluate the potential for ankle resistance with biofeedback to facilitate utilization of the ankle plantar flexors. We also conducted a 12-session ankle resistance training protocol with one pilot participant.Results Participants reached the lowest net metabolic power and soleus integrated electromyography (iEMG) at 6.6 ± 1.6 and 5.8 ± 4.9 min, respectively, during the 30-min exoskeleton assistance adaptation trial. Four of five participants exhibited a reduction (up to 19%) in metabolic power during walking with assistance. Resistance increased stance-phase soleus iEMG by 18-186% and stance-phase average positive ankle power by 9-88%. Following ankle resistance gait training, the participant exhibited increased walking speed, endurance, and strength.Conclusions Our results suggest that dual-mode ankle exoskeletons appear highly applicable to treating plantar flexor dysfunction in the elderly, with assistance holding potential as a mobility aid and resistance holding potential as a functional gait training tool. © 2022 The Author(s).
