    Social-Aware Edge Caching in Fog Radio Access Networks

    Fog radio access networks (F-RANs) are becoming an emerging and promising paradigm for fifth generation cellular communication systems. In F-RANs, distributed edge caching techniques among remote radio heads (RRHs) and user equipment (UE) can effectively alleviate the burdens on the fronthaul toward the base band unit pool and the bandwidth of the RANs. However, it is still not clear as to how social relationships affect the performance of edge caching schemes. This paper attempts to analyze the impact of mobile social networks (MSNs) on the performance of edge caching in F-RANs. We propose a Markov-chain-based model to analyze edge caching among edge nodes (i.e., RRHs and MSNs), as well as data sharing among the potential MSNs from the viewpoint of content diffusion in the F-RANs. Moreover, we analyze the edge caching schemes among UE to minimize the bandwidth consumption in the RANs. Finally, the optimal edge caching strategies among RRHs in terms of caching locations and time are introduced to minimize the bandwidth consumption of fronthaul and storage costs in the F-RANs. Simulation results show that the proposed edge caching schemes among UE and RRHs are able to reduce the bandwidth consumption of RANs and fronthaul effectively

    Turbulence and turbulent events in tidal bores: field observations

    A tidal bore is a compressive wave of tidal origin, propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising when a macro-tidal flood flow enters a funnel shaped river mouth with shallow waters. New field measurements were conducted in the Garonne River tidal bore at Arcins in 2015. Instantaneous velocity measurements were performed continuously at high-frequency prior to, during and after each bore. The bore occurrence had a marked effect on the velocity and turbulent Reynolds stress field, with large and rapid fluctuations, during the bore passage and the early flood tide. A turbulent event analysis was conducted in the highly unsteady rapidly-varied tidal bore flow. The method detects bursting events by comparing the absolute value of an instantaneous turbulent flux with its standard deviation. This analysis, based upon basic concepts, was extended to the rapidly varied, highly-unsteady tidal bore flood flow motion. The turbulent event data analysis showed relatively close results for all studies and all fluxes. A very large majority of turbulent events had a duration less than 0.01 s, with on average 20 turbulent events per second. During all studies, the event duration showed some tidal trend, with longer turbulent events immediately after the tidal bore passage, occurring simultaneously with sediment erosion processes

    Complexity of diatom response to Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in ancient, deep and oligotrophic Lake Ohrid (Macedonia and Albania)

    © Author(s) 2016. Lake Ohrid (Macedonia and Albania) is a rare example of a deep, ancient Mediterranean lake and is a key site for palaeoclimate research in the northeastern Mediterranean region. This study conducts the analysis of diatoms as a proxy for Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in Lake Ohrid at a higher resolution than in previous studies. While Lake Ohrid has the potential to be sensitive to water temperature change, the data demonstrate a highly complex diatom response, probably comprising a direct response to temperature-induced lake productivity in some phases and an indirect response to temperaturerelated lake stratification or mixing and epilimnetic nutrient availability in others. The data also demonstrate the possible influence of physical limnological (e.g. the influence of wind stress on stratification or mixing) and chemical processes (e.g. the influence of catchment dynamics on nutrient input) in mediating the complex response of diatoms. During the Lateglacial (ca. 12 300-11 800 cal yr BP), the low-diversity dominance of hypolimnetic Cyclotella fottii indicates low lake productivity, linked to low water temperature. Although the subsequent slight increase in small, epilimnetic C. minuscula during the earliest Holocene (ca. 11 800-10 600 cal yr BP) suggests climate warming and enhanced stratification, diatom concentration remains as low as during the Lateglacial, suggesting that water temperature increase was muted across this major transition. The early Holocene (ca. 10 600-8200 cal yr BP) is characterised by a sustained increase in epilimnetic taxa, with mesotrophic C. ocellata indicating high water-temperature-induced productivity between ca. 10 600-10 200 cal yr BP and between ca. 9500-8200 cal yr BP and with C. minuscula in response to low nutrient availability in the epilimnion between ca. 10 200-9500 cal yr BP. During the middle Holocene (ca. 8200-2600 cal yr BP), when sedimentological and geochemical proxies provide evidence for maximum Holocene water temperature, anomalously low C. ocellata abundance is probably a response to epilimnetic nutrient limitation, almost mimicking the Lateglacial flora apart from the occurrence of mesotrophic Stephanodiscus transylvanicus in the hypolimnion. During the late Holocene (ca. 2600 cal yr BP-present), high abundance and fluctuating composition of epilimnetic taxa are probably a response more to enhanced anthropogenic nutrient input, particularly nitrogen enrichment, than to climate. Overall, the data indicate that previous assumptions concerning the linearity of diatom response in this deep, ancient lake are invalid, and multi-proxy analysis is essential to improve understanding of palaeolimnological dynamics in future research on the long, Quaternary sequence

    Effect of Na doping on flux pinning of YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3O7-d

    We have prepared Na-doped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3Oy +40mol%Y211) (YBNCO) and Na-free YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) samples by the Melt-Textured Growth (MTG) method to study the effect of doped Na ion on flux pinning. The ac susceptibility curves (acs) as well as the hysteresis loops were measured for the samples. Then the effective pinning energy (U(T,Hdc,J)), irreversibility line (Hirr(T)) and critical current density (jc(Hdc)) were determined, where T, Hdc and J are temperature, dc magnetic field and current density, respectively. We found that, with Na doping, the Hirr(T) line shifted to lower temperature while the Jc(Hdc) and U(T,Hdc,J) became smaller. It indicates that the Na ions play a negative role in the flux pinning of YBCO. The appearance of the second peak in the Jc(Hdc) curves and the enhancement of anisotropy in YBNCO further support this finding.Comment: 7 pages, 7figures. Submited to Physica.

    Classification of Overlapped Audio Events Based on AT, PLSA, and the Combination of Them

    Audio event classification, as an important part of Computational Auditory Scene Analysis, has attracted much attention. Currently, the classification technology is mature enough to classify isolated audio events accurately, but for overlapped audio events, it performs much worse. While in real life, most audio documents would have certain percentage of overlaps, and so the overlap classification problem is an important part of audio classification. Nowadays, the work on overlapped audio event classification is still scarce, and most existing overlap classification systems can only recognize one audio event for an overlap. In this paper, in order to deal with overlaps, we innovatively introduce the author-topic (AT) model which was first proposed for text analysis into audio classification, and innovatively combine it with PLSA (Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis). We propose 4 systems, i.e. AT, PLSA, AT-PLSA and PLSA-AT, to classify overlaps. The 4 proposed systems have the ability to recognize two or more audio events for an overlap. The experimental results show that the 4 systems perform well in classifying overlapped audio events, whether it is the overlap in training set or the overlap out of training set. Also they perform well in classifying isolated audio events

    Epitaxial growth of high quality WO3 thin films

    We have grown epitaxial WO3 films on various single-crystal substrates using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. While pronounced surface roughness is observed in films grown on LaSrAlO4 substrates, films grown on Y AlO3 substrates show atomically flat surfaces, as demonstrated by atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The crystalline structure has been confirmed to be monoclinic by symmetric and skew-symmetric XRD. The dependence of the growth modes and the surface morphology on the lattice mismatch are discussed

    Shape memory characteristics of woven glass fibre fabric reinforced epoxy composite in flexure

    Shape memory characteristics of a woven glass fibre (GF) fabric reinforced epoxy composite (reinforcement content: 38 vol.%) were assessed in three point bending mode in a dynamic-mechanical analysis device and compared to those of the parent epoxy resin (EP). From unconstrained tests the shape fixity and recovery ratios and the recovery rate, whereas from constrained tests the recovery stress were determined. The shape fixity and recovery rate decreased due to the GF reinforcement which had, however, no effect on the shape recovery. Major benefit of the woven GF fabric was that the recovery stress could be enhanced by two orders of magnitude in comparison to the neat EP. GF reinforcement was accompanied with a substantial decrease in the failure-free flexural deformability of the composite specimen

    Analysis of rolling contact spall life in 440 C steel bearing rims

    The results of a two year study of the mechanisms of spall failure in the HPOTP bearings are described. The objective was to build a foundation for detailed analyses of the contact life in terms of: cyclic plasticity, contact mechanics, spall nucleation, and spall growth. Since the laboratory rolling contact testing is carried out in the 3 ball/rod contact fatigue testing machine, the analysis of the contacts and contact lives produced in this machine received attention. The results from the experimentally observed growth lives are compared with calculated predictions derived from the fracture mechanics calculations
