Repeated supra-maximal sprint cycling with and without sodium bicarbonate supplementation induces endothelial microparticle release
Under normal homeostatic conditions, the endothelium releases microparticles (MP), which are known to increase under stressful conditions and in disease states. CD105 (endoglin) and CD106 (vascular cell adhesion molecule-1) are expressed on the surface of endothelial cells and increased expression in response to stress may be observed. A randomised-controlled double-blinded study aimed to examine the use of endothelial microparticles as a marker for the state of oneās endothelium, as well as whether maintaining acid-base homeostasis affects the release of these MP. This study tested seven healthy male volunteers, who completed a strenuous cycling protocol, with venous blood analysed for CD105+ and CD106+ MP by flow cytometry at regular intervals. Prior to each trial participants consumed either 0.3 gĀ·kg-1 body mass of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), or 0.045 gĀ·kg-1 body mass of sodium chloride (NaCl). A significant rise in endothelial CD105+MP and CD106+MP (p < 0.05) was observed at 90 minutes post exercise. A significant trend was shown for these MP to return to resting levels 180 minutes post exercise in both groups. No significance was found between experimental groups, suggesting that maintaining acid-base variables closer to basal levels has little effect upon the endothelial stress response for this particular exercise mode. In conclusion, strenuous exercise is accompanied by MP release and the endothelium is able to rapidly recover in healthy individuals, whilst maintaining acid-base homeostasis does not attenuate the MP release from the endothelium after exercise
Implications of a pre-exercise alkalosis-mediated attenuation of HSP72 on its response to a subsequent bout of exercise
The aim of this study was to investigate if a pre-exercise alkalosis-mediated attenuation of HSP72 had any effect on the response of the same stress protein after a subsequent exercise. Seven physically active males [25.0 Ā± 6.5 years, 182.1 Ā± 6.0 cm, 74.0 Ā± 8.3 kg, peak aerobic power (PPO) 316 Ā± 46 W] performed a repeated sprint exercise (EXB1) following a dose of 0.3 g kgā»Ā¹ body mass of sodium bicarbonate (BICARB), or a placebo of 0.045 g kgā»Ā¹ body mass of sodium chloride (PLAC). Participants then completed a 90-min intermittent cycling protocol (EXB2). Monocyte expressed HSP72 was significantly attenuated after EXB1 in BICARB compared to PLAC, however, there was no difference in the HSP72 response to the subsequent EXB2 between conditions. Furthermore there was no difference between conditions for measures of oxidative stress (protein carbonyl and HSP32). These findings confirm the sensitivity of the HSP72 response to exercise-induced changes in acidābase status in vivo, but suggest that the attenuated response has little effect upon subsequent stress in the same day
Harmonic analysis of lossy piezoelectric composite transducers using the plane wave expansion method
Periodic composite ultrasonic transducers oer many advantages but the periodic pillar architecture can give rise to unwanted modes of vibration which interfere with the piston like motion of the fundamental thickness mode. In this paper, viscoelastic loss is incorporated into a three dimensional plane wave expansion model (PWE) of these transducers. A comparison with experimental and nite element data is conducted and a design to damp out these lateral modes is investigated. Scaling and regularisation techniques are introduced to the PWE method to reduceill-conditioning in the large matrices which can arise. The identication of the modes of vibration is aided by examining proles of the displacements, electrical potentialand Poynting vector. The dispersive behaviour of a 2-2 composite transducer with high shear attenuation in the passive phase is examined. The model shows thatthe use of a high shear attenuation ller material improves the frequency band gap surrounding the fundamental thickness mode
An analysis of HCPC fitness to practise hearings: Fit to Practise or Fit for Purpose?
All professions regulated by the HCPC have āprotection of titleā. This means that only those on its relevant register can legally work as or call themselves a social worker. As such, the HCPCās Fitness to Practise panel wields a lot of power over individuals brought before it, effectively being able to prevent them from gaining employment as a social worker or imposing conditions on their practice. This article reports the findings from a study which examined publically available notes of HCPC fitness to practise hearings. The aim was to analyse what happens when an initial investigation finds that there is a case to answer, what factors influence the findings of the Fitness to Practise panel and how the outcome of the hearing then affects the social worker subject to the HCPC process. Using thematic analysis, our findings suggest that the seriousness of the alleged misconduct does not necessarily relate to the severity of sanction applied. It is the social workerās engagement with the process, her insight into the issues and her credibility as a witness that appears to have the most significant bearing on the level of sanction applied
Seasonal Variability of Saturn's Tropospheric Temperatures, Winds and Para-H from Cassini Far-IR Spectroscopy
Far-IR 16-1000 m spectra of Saturn's hydrogen-helium continuum measured
by Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) are inverted to construct a
near-continuous record of upper tropospheric (70-700 mbar) temperatures and
para-H fraction as a function of latitude, pressure and time for a third of
a Saturnian year (2004-2014, from northern winter to northern spring). The
thermal field reveals evidence of reversing summertime asymmetries superimposed
onto the belt/zone structure. The temperature structure that is almost
symmetric about the equator by 2014, with seasonal lag times that increase with
depth and are qualitatively consistent with radiative climate models. Localised
heating of the tropospheric hazes (100-250 mbar) create a distinct perturbation
to the temperature profile that shifts in magnitude and location, declining in
the autumn hemisphere and growing in the spring. Changes in the para-H
() distribution are subtle, with a 0.02-0.03 rise over the spring
hemisphere (200-500 mbar) perturbed by (i) low- air advected by both the
springtime storm of 2010 and equatorial upwelling; and (ii) subsidence of
high- air at northern high latitudes, responsible for a developing
north-south asymmetry in . Conversely, the shifting asymmetry in the
para-H disequilibrium primarily reflects the changing temperature structure
(and the equilibrium distribution of ), rather than actual changes in
induced by chemical conversion or transport. CIRS results interpolated to
the same point in the seasonal cycle as re-analysed Voyager-1 observations show
qualitative consistency, with the exception of the tropical tropopause near the
equatorial zones and belts, where downward propagation of a cool temperature
anomaly associated with Saturn's stratospheric oscillation could potentially

The Electronic Maintenance Report forms allow Local Maintenance Providers (LMP) and other program staff to enter maintenance information into a simple and secure system. This document describes the features and information required to complete the Maintenance Report forms. It is expected that all Corrective Maintenance Reports from LMPs will be submitted electronically into the SLD Portal. As an exception (e.g., when access to the SLD Portal is unavailable), Maintenance Reports can be submitted via a secure Adobe PDF form available through the Sustainability Manager assigned to each country
Progress Toward Meeting the Propulsion Technology Challenges for a 21st Century High-Speed Civil Transport
Ongoing NASA-funded and privately funded studies continue to indicate that an opportunity exists for a second generation supersonic commercial airliner, or High-Speed Civil Transport (HSCT), to become a key part of the 21st century international air transportation system. Long distance air travel is projected to increase at about 5 percent per annum over the next two decades. This projection suggests that by the year 2015, more than 600,000 passengers per day will be traveling long distances, predominantly over water. These routes would be among the most desirable for an HSCT as part of the international air transportation system. Beyond the year 2000, this portion of the air transportation market is projected to be the fastest growing segment
THE IMPLICATIONS OF A NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AREA FOR AGRICULTURE
This is one of two papers commissioned by the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium on various aspects related to the agricultural sector of a prospective North American Free Trade Agreement. The companion paper to this one has been prepared by a working group chaired by Thomas Grennes, North Carolina State University. To minimize duplication with the Grennes paper, this paper has given greater attention to the general trade policy issues raised by a NAFTA, institutional factors, additional commodity detail in cereals, fruit and vegetables, and the relevance of other regional trade agreements such as the Canada-U.S. Trade Agreement.
