    TECHNIQUES TO START THE STOOP CIRCLE (ADLER) ON HIGH BAR

    The stoop circle rearward forward (Adler) is often performed by gymnasts on high bar. The final position, the handstand is a component of judges’ execution value. For the stoop circle only the final position is determined by the gymnastics rules. The start position is not declared. There are two main techniques to start the element stoop circle, which we define as “high” and “low” technique. Aims of the research are finding biomechanical differences between the two techniques and deducing requirements for gymnasts. 2D-video analysis from high bar routines of the World Championships 2007 was used. There are more gymnasts performing the “high” technique. We find differences in movement time and maximum angular velocities for hip and shoulder angles. These differences should be considered by coaches and gymnasts

    A superfluid hydrodynamic model for the enhanced moments of inertia of molecules in liquid 4He

    We present a superfluid hydrodynamic model for the increase in moment of inertia, ΔI\Delta I, of molecules rotating in liquid 4^4He. The static inhomogeneous He density around each molecule (calculated using the Orsay-Paris liquid 4^4He density functional) is assumed to adiabatically follow the rotation of the molecule. We find that the ΔI\Delta I values created by the viscousless and irrotational flow are in good agreement with the observed increases for several molecules [ OCS, (HCN)2_2, HCCCN, and HCCCH3_3 ]. For HCN and HCCH, our model substantially overestimates ΔI\Delta I. This is likely to result from a (partial) breakdown of the adiabatic following approximation.Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps figure, corrected version of published paper. Contrairement Ă  ce que les anthropologues tiennent depuis longtemps pour acquis, une terminologie n’est pas forcĂ©ment inhĂ©rente aux relations gĂ©nĂ©alogiques, ces derniĂšres dĂ©coulant de la logique structurelle de la terminologie de parentĂ©. La structure de la terminologie, reprĂ©sentĂ©e sous une forme algĂ©brique, peut ĂȘtre produite Ă  partir des principaux termes de parentĂ©, suivant un principe supposĂ© universel de structures terminologiques de la parentĂ©. English: Kinship systems are conceptually grounded in culturally formulated idea-systems we refer to as kinship terminologies and through which the boundaries, form and structure of human social systems are culturally constituted. A terminology, contrary to a long-standing assumption in anthropology, is not based on a prior categorization of genealogical relations, as the latter is derived from the structural logic of the kinship terminology. The terminology structure, formally represented as an algebraic structure, can be generated from primary kin terms in accordance with a hypothesized universal theory of kinship terminology structures. Terminologies differ culturally according to the primary terms and equations used for generating them. This requires a paradigm shift from the received view of genealogy as the primary basis for kin relations to a new paradigm in which kinship incorporates both a kin term space expressed through a culturally constituted idea-system we refer to as a kinship terminology and a genealogical space constructed recursively using parent-child relations. Both of these spaces are grounded in a family space composed of parent-child, spouse and sibling positions

    Structural and functional conservation of the human homolog of the Schizosaccharomyces pombe rad2 gene, which is required for chromosome segregation and recovery from DNA damage

    The rad2 mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe is sensitive to UV irradiation and deficient in the repair of UV damage. In addition, it has a very high degree of chromosome loss and/or nondisjunction. We have cloned the rad2 gene and have shown it to be a member of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae RAD2/S. pombe rad13/human XPG family. Using degenerate PCR, we have cloned the human homolog of the rad2 gene. Human cDNA has 55% amino acid sequence identity to the rad2 gene and is able to complement the UV sensitivity of the rad2 null mutant. We have thus isolated a novel human gene which is likely to be involved both in controlling the fidelity of chromosome segregation and in the repair of UV-induced DNA damage. Its involvement in two fundamental processes for maintaining chromosomal integrity suggests that it is likely to be an important component of cancer avoidance mechanisms

    Management system for building materials as a basis for closed loop material flow analysis considering material efficiency and climate change mitigation

    Resource management is becoming increasingly important in the construction sector. In order to support the recycling of materials, it is necessary to determine the quantities in the building stock and those caused by construction activities. At present, a large number of different actors use different categories for construction materials and the raw materials they consist of as well as for waste categories, depending on their field of activity. This results in imprecisions that make it difficult to consistently track and influence mass flows and hinder targeted resource management. This is the starting point of this paper as it discusses possibilities to establish a consistent allocation of materials to context-typical groups following the approach of continuous material flow analysis. On the input-side, aspects of mineral planning and on the output-side aspects of waste and secondary raw material management are being considered and references to grey emissions are established along the entire process chain. In this way, cross-departmental planning relating to recycling management and climate protection will be supported. With regard to the object of consideration and the level of action, a distinction is made between two different spatial scale levels: on the one hand, the individual building level, where the material inventory approach is used to provide detailed information on the building\u27s material composition, and on the other hand the regional level, for which more aggregated information on building material groups is provided in the form of material cadastres.     Carbon storage and DNA absorption in allophanic soils and paleosols

    Andisols and andic paleosols dominated by the nanocrystalline mineral allophane sequester large amounts of carbon (C), attributable mainly to its chemical bonding with charged hydroxyl groups on the surface of allophane together with its physical protection in nanopores within and between allophane nanoaggregates. C near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra for a New Zealand Andisol (Tirau series) showed that the organic matter (OM) mainly comprises quinonic, aromatic, aliphatic, and carboxylic C. In different buried horizons from several other Andisols, C contents varied but the C species were similar, attributable to pedogenic processes operating during developmental upbuilding, downward leaching, or both. The presence of OM in natural allophanic soils weakened the adsorption of DNA on clay; an adsorption isotherm experiment involving humic acid (HA) showed that HA-free synthetic allophane adsorbed seven times more DNA than HA-rich synthetic allophane. Phosphorus X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for salmonsperm DNA and DNA-clay complexes indicated that DNA was bound to the allophane clay through the phosphate group, but it is not clear if DNA was chemically bound to the surface of the allophane or to OM, or both. We plan more experiments to investigate interactions among DNA, allophane (natural and synthetic), and OM. Because DNA shows a high affinity to allophane, we are studying the potential to reconstruct late Quaternary palaeoenvironments by attempting to extract and characterise ancient DNA from allophanic paleosol

    Serotonin Transporter (5-HTTLPR) Genotype and Childhood Trauma are Associated with Individual Differences in Decision Making

    The factors that influence individual differences in decision making are not yet fully characterized, but convergent evidence is accumulating that implicates serotonin (5-HT) system function. Therefore, both genes and environments that influence serotonin function are good candidates for association with risky decision making. In the present study we examined associations between common polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4; 5-HTTLPR and rs25531), the experience of childhood trauma and decision making on the Iowa gambling task (IGT) in 391 (64.5% female) healthy Caucasian adults. Homozygosity for the 5-HTTLPR L allele was associated with riskier decision making in the first block of 20 trials (i.e., decision making under ambiguity, p = 0.004). In addition, mean IGT performance was significantly worse in blocks 3–5 (i.e., decision making under risk, p ≀ 0.05) for those participants who reported experiencing higher levels of childhood trauma. Our findings add to the growing evidence that genetic variation in the 5-HT system is associated with individual differences in decision making under ambiguity; and we report that the experience of childhood trauma is associated with relatively poor decision making under risk
