    Humans perceive flicker artifacts at 500 Hz.

    Humans perceive a stable average intensity image without flicker artifacts when a television or monitor updates at a sufficiently fast rate. This rate, known as the critical flicker fusion rate, has been studied for both spatially uniform lights, and spatio-temporal displays. These studies have included both stabilized and unstablized retinal images, and report the maximum observable rate as 50-90 Hz. A separate line of research has reported that fast eye movements known as saccades allow simple modulated LEDs to be observed at very high rates. Here we show that humans perceive visual flicker artifacts at rates over 500 Hz when a display includes high frequency spatial edges. This rate is many times higher than previously reported. As a result, modern display designs which use complex spatio-temporal coding need to update much faster than conventional TVs, which traditionally presented a simple sequence of natural images

    Correlation between Pineal Activation and Religious Meditation Observed by Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    The human brain possesses plenty of functions but little is known about its scientific relationship with mind and spirit. Conferences^1,2^ focused on the connection between science and religion were held very recently in which neuroscientists, Buddhist scholars and Dalai Lama discussed attention, mental imagery, emotion, mind, brain functions and meditation, suggesting religious meditation offers an effective means to investigate the mystery of mind and spirit. In the past decade, scientists struggled to obtain brain mappings for various meditation styles using different brain imaging techniques and stimulating results have been observed^3-17^. In this letter we report that, together with other brain regions, pineal body exhibit significant activation during meditation process, supporting the long lasting speculation that pineal plays an important role in the intrinsic awareness which might concern spirit or soul. Pineal is known as an endocrine organ which produces substrates including melatonin and has been ascribed numerous even mysterious functions but its activation during meditation has never been observed by brain imaging technique. In seventeenth century, based on anatomic observation, Descartes ventured to suggest that pineal serves as the principal seat of the soul^18-20^. Inspired by its geometric center in the brain, physiologists, psychologists, philosophers and religionists have been speculating for centuries about pineal's function relevant to spirit and soul. In this study, we chose Chinese Original Quiet Sitting, one style of meditation, to explore this long lasting speculation by functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. Our results demonstrate a correlation between pineal activation and religious meditation which might have profound implications in physiological understanding of the intrinsic awareness

    Local P T symmetry violates the no-signaling principle

    Bender et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5243 (1998)] have developed PT-symmetric quantum theory as an extension of quantum theory to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We show that when this model has a local PT symmetry acting on composite systems, it violates the nonsignaling principle of relativity. Since the case of global PT symmetry is known to reduce to standard quantum mechanics A. Mostafazadeh [J. Math. Phys. 43, 205 (2001)], this shows that the PT-symmetric theory is either a trivial extension or likely false as a fundamental theory. © 2014 American Physical Society

    THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL CAPITAL ON BRAND EVANGELISM IN ONLINE BRAND FAN PAGE: THE ROLE OF PASSIONATE BRAND LOVE

    In recent years research studies have tackle the issue of brand fan economy and their behaviours, however little is known about brand evangelism. Given that many consumers are crazy in love with brand fan page on Facebook, understanding how fans behave in brand fan page is crucial in determining brand evangelism. Our main goal is to understand how different dimensions of social capitals in online fan page exert influence on brand love and how the underlying mechanism in turn facilitates consumers to develop brand evangelism. By using partial least square (PLS), the results show that the three dimensions of social capital impose differing effects in influencing the establishment of brand love and its consequent effect on brand evangelistic behaviours in SNS. It is found that relational capital in brand fan page serves as the most influential antecedent to drive brand love. The findings of this study have significant implications to both marketers and researchers

    ALMA observations of the protostellar disk around the VeLLO IRAS 16253-2429

    We present ALMA long-baseline observations toward the Class 0 protostar IRAS 16253-2429 (hereafter IRAS 16253) with a resolution down to 0.12" (~15 au). The 1.3 mm dust continuum emission has a deconvolved Gaussian size of 0.16" x 0. 07" (20 au x 8.8 au), likely tracing an inclined dusty disk. Interestingly, the position of the 1.38 mm emission is offset from that of the 0.87 mm emission along the disk minor axis. Such an offset may come from a torus-like disk with very different optical depths between these two wavelengths. Furthermore, through CO (2 - 1) and C18O (2 - 1) observations, we study rotation and infall motions in this disk-envelope system and infer the presence of a Keplerian disk with a radius of 8 - 32 au. This result suggests that the disk could have formed by directly evolving from a first core, because IRAS16253 is too young to gradually grow a disk to such a size considering the low rotation rate of its envelope. In addition, we find a quadruple pattern in the CO emission at low velocity, which may originate from CO freeze out at the disk/envelope midplane. This suggests that the "cold disk" may appear in the early stage, implying a chemical evolution for the disk around this proto-brown dwarf (or very low-mass protostar) different from that of low-mass stars.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 11 pages, 6 figure
