Thermal Pollution Mathematical Model
The free-surface model presented is for tidal estuaries and coastal regions where ambient tidal forces play an important role in the dispersal of heated water. The model is time dependent, three dimensional, and can handle irregular bottom topography. The vertical stretching coordinate is adopted for better treatment of kinematic condition at the water surface. The results include surface elevation, velocity, and temperature. The model was verified at the Anclote Anchorage site of Florida Power Company. Two data bases at four tidal stages for winter and summer conditions were used to verify the model. Differences between measured and predicted temperatures are on an average of less than 1 C
Verification and transfer of thermal pollution model. Volume 2: User's manual for 3-dimensional free-surface model
The six-volume report: describes the theory of a three-dimensional (3-D) mathematical thermal discharge model and a related one-dimensional (1-D) model, includes model verification at two sites, and provides a separate user's manual for each model. The 3-D model has two forms: free surface and rigid lid. The former, verified at Anclote Anchorage (FL), allows a free air/water interface and is suited for significant surface wave heights compared to mean water depth; e.g., estuaries and coastal regions. The latter, verified at Lake Keowee (SC), is suited for small surface wave heights compared to depth. These models allow computation of time-dependent velocity and temperature fields for given initial conditions and time-varying boundary conditions
Spectator Behavior in a Quantum Hall Antidot with Multiple Bound Modes
We theoretically study Aharonov-Bohm resonances in an antidot system with
multiple bound modes in the integer quantum Hall regime, taking capacitive
interactions between the modes into account. We find the spectator behavior
that the resonances of some modes disappear and instead are replaced by those
of other modes, due to internal charge relaxation between the modes. This
behavior is a possible origin of the features of previous experimental data
which remain unexplained, spectator behavior in an antidot molecule and
resonances in a single antidot with three modes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letter
Initial Parton Distribution just after Heavy Ion Collisions
We study the initial distribution of a parton system which is formed just
after relativistic heavy ion collision by the elastic scattering among the
constituent partons in details and analyze the baryon and strangeness contents
of the primary parton system. We present the rapidity and energy distributions
of the system.Comment: 17 page
Method and apparatus for producing an image from a transparent object
The contrast produced from a photographic transparency is controlled by placing the transparency between a pair of partially reflecting mirrors forming walls of an optical cavity. Mirrors trap a collimated laser beam illuminating the transparency so that at least a portion of the beam energy is passed through the transparency plural times. The distance that the light beam travels between the mirrors is controlled as a function of the wavelength of the beam energy to control the phase of light interference in the beam passing through the transparency, thereby controlling the intensity of the beam derived from the mirror downstream of the transparency
Neutron matter on the lattice with pionless effective field theory
We study neutron matter by combining pionless effective field theory with
non-perturbative lattice methods. The neutron contact interaction is determined
by zero temperature scattering data. We simulate neutron matter on the lattice
at temperatures 4 and 8 MeV and densities below one-fifth normal nuclear matter
density. Our results at different lattice spacings agree with one another and
match bubble chain calculations at low densities. The equation of state of pure
neutron matter obtained from our simulations agrees quantitatively with
variational calculations based on realistic potentials.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure
