On a Lie Algebraic Characterization of Vector Bundles
We prove that a vector bundle is characterized by the Lie
algebra generated by all differential operators on which are eigenvectors
of the Lie derivative in the direction of the Euler vector field. Our result is
of Pursell-Shanks type but it is remarkable in the sense that it is the whole
fibration that is characterized here. The proof relies on a theorem of [Lecomte
P., J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 60 (1981), 229-239] and inherits the same
hypotheses. In particular, our characterization holds only for vector bundles
of rank greater than 1
Decomposition of symmetric tensor fields in the presence of a flat contact projective structure
Let be an odd-dimensional Euclidean space endowed with a contact 1-form
. We investigate the space of symmetric contravariant tensor fields on
as a module over the Lie algebra of contact vector fields, i.e. over the
Lie subalgebra made up by those vector fields that preserve the contact
structure. If we consider symmetric tensor fields with coefficients in tensor
densities, the vertical cotangent lift of contact form is a contact
invariant operator. We also extend the classical contact Hamiltonian to the
space of symmetric density valued tensor fields. This generalized Hamiltonian
operator on the symbol space is invariant with respect to the action of the
projective contact algebra . The preceding invariant operators lead
to a decomposition of the symbol space (expect for some critical density
weights), which generalizes a splitting proposed by V. Ovsienko
Beam tests of the trigger and digital processing electronics for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment
A prototype of the trigger and digital processing electronics for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment, coupled to a prototype of the PbWO4 crystal calorimeter, was tested during summer 96 in the H4 beamline at the CERN SPS. A very successful operation was achieved for this system, which runs in synchronous and pipelined mode at the LHC clock frequency, and performs the basic trigger and data acquisition functions needed in the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter. The performance of the trigger front-end electronics is well within the established requirements: a highly efficient bunch crossing identification ( > 99.9%), a good trigger energy resolution ( s/E ~9%/sq( E)+2%) and a highly efficient electron cluster shape identification ( ~99%) have been achieved. The FERMI digitizing system based on a dynamic analog compressor and a sampling ADC showed a very good perform ance, in particular the energy resolution for 150 GeV electrons was 0.54%, equal to the resolution obtained with a conventional charge integration ADC system

Highly efficient separation of actinides from lanthanides by a phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine ligand
The synthesis, lanthanide complexation, and solvent ex- traction of actinide(III) and lanthanide(III) radiotracers from nitric acid solutions by a phenanthroline-derived quadridentate bis-triazine ligand are described. The ligand separates Am(III) and Cm(III) from the lanthanides with remarkably high efficiency, high selectivity, and fast extraction kinetics compared to its 2,2'-bipyridine counterpart. Structures of the 1:2 bis-complexes of the ligand with Eu(III) and Yb(III) were elucidated by X-ray crystallography and force field calculations, respec-tively. The Eu(III) bis-complex is the first 1:2 bis-complex of a quadridentate bis-triazine ligand to be characterized by crystallography. The faster rates of extraction were verified by kinetics measurements using the rotating membrane cell technique in several diluents. The improved kinetics of metal ion extraction are related to the higher surface activity of the ligand at the phase interface. The improvement in the ligand's properties on replacing the bipyridine unit with a phenanthroline unit far exceeds what was anticipated based on ligand design alone
Внедрение и принцип работы системы сейсмического мониторинга горного массива для работы в условиях ООО "Шахта "Усковская"
The status of the Silicon Microvertex Detector (SMD) and its installation into the LEP-L3 experiment are presented, highlighting novel features and sophisticated techniques. Preliminary results based on 1993 data are given and compared with Monte Carlo predictions, to understand the detector performances and its tracking capabilities
(Homo)glutathione Deficiency Impairs Root-knot Nematode Development in Medicago truncatula
Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are obligatory plant parasitic worms that establish and maintain an intimate relationship with their host plants. During a compatible interaction, RKN induce the redifferentiation of root cells into multinucleate and hypertrophied giant cells essential for nematode growth and reproduction. These metabolically active feeding cells constitute the exclusive source of nutrients for the nematode. Detailed analysis of glutathione (GSH) and homoglutathione (hGSH) metabolism demonstrated the importance of these compounds for the success of nematode infection in Medicago truncatula. We reported quantification of GSH and hGSH and gene expression analysis showing that (h)GSH metabolism in neoformed gall organs differs from that in uninfected roots. Depletion of (h)GSH content impaired nematode egg mass formation and modified the sex ratio. In addition, gene expression and metabolomic analyses showed a substantial modification of starch and γ-aminobutyrate metabolism and of malate and glucose content in (h)GSH-depleted galls. Interestingly, these modifications did not occur in (h)GSH-depleted roots. These various results suggest that (h)GSH have a key role in the regulation of giant cell metabolism. The discovery of these specific plant regulatory elements could lead to the development of new pest management strategies against nematodes
Search for R-Parity Breaking Sneutrino Exchange at LEP
We report on a search for R--parity breaking effects due to supersymmetric tau--sneutrino exchange in the reactions e+e- to e+e- and e+e- to mu+mu- at centre--of--mass energies from 91~{\GeV} to 172~{\GeV}, using the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence for deviations from the Standard Model expectations of the measured cross sections and forward--backward asymmetries for these reactions is found. Upper limits for the couplings and for sneutrino masses up to m_{\SNT} \leq 190~\GeV are determined from an analysis of the expected effects due to tau sneutrino exchange
