Magneto-optical absorption properties of a Weyl semimetal thin film

    Get PDF
In this study, we investigate the magneto-optical absorption properties of a Weyl semimetal thin film by calculating the magneto-optical absorption coefficients (MOACs) for both intra-band and inter-band transitions. The wave function and energy spectrum were determined using the Hamiltonian minimal model in the presence of magnetic and electric fields. The expressions for the MOACs in both x- and z-directions are obtained using the compact density matrix approach. The numerical results demonstrate that the MOACs are significantly influenced by temperature, carrier concentration, and magnetic and electric fields

Magneto-optical absorption coefficients in monolayer MoSe2

We study the linear, third-order nonlinear, and total absorption coefficients (OACs) caused by intra- and inter-band transitions in monolayer MoSe2 in the presence of a magnetic field by using the compact density matrix approach. The results show that the OACs display the blue-shift behaviour with an increase in the magnetic field. The Zeeman fields do not affect the peak positions but reduce peak intensities slightly. Besides, the strong spin-orbit coupling in monolayer MoSe2 causes the peaks to differ significantly due to spin-up and spin-down. The OACs due to intra-band transition display only one peak in the THz range, while the inter-band spectra show a series of peaks in the near-infrared optical range, making monolayer MoSe2 a promising candidate for novel optoelectronic applications

Encouraging Dialogue around Social Issues with Latinx Students Through Literature Discussion and Culturally Relevant Literature

    Get PDF
This teacher research study examines literature discussions with fourth and fifth grade Latinx students about books that reflect Latinx experiences. For this study, the following questions are explored (1) What social issues do students discuss in literature groups? (2) How do literary response strategies influence student dialogue? And (3) How does my theoretical frame influence my decision making as a teacher? Theories that informed the construction of the literature discussions and the decision making occurring throughout the study are examined closely. The theories intertwine and bridge education and students’ experiences as a resource in learning more about the educational setting. In this study, the discussions of students and the literature response strategies are explored as the data is analyzed to examine the student discussions around issues of immigration, family separation, borders, and so much more. The findings in this study indicate that the experiences of Latinx students are integral to the educational setting and an education that invites who they are enhances their learning experiences. Latinx students are eager for learning opportunities that invite their voices and stories. It is through the construction and assessment of the educational setting that educators can promote culturally responsive, relevant, and sustaining teaching experiences that go beyond the classroom setting. Latinx students build relationships with each other and their teachers as they engage in discussions that allow them to share and learn with each other. This study is a reminder of the crucial role teachers play in creating such powerful spaces and the value that Latinx students bring into the classroom when invited to discuss, engage, and create powerful learning experiences

Phase Shift Design for RIS-Aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Improved Differential Evolution

This paper proposes a novel phase shift design for cell-free massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which only utilizes channel statistics to achieve the uplink sum ergodic throughput maximization under spatial channel correlations. Due to the non-convexity and the scale of the derived optimization problem, we develop an improved version of the differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The proposed scheme is capable of providing high-quality solutions within reasonable computing time. Numerical results demonstrate superior improvements of the proposed phase shift designs over the other benchmarks, particularly in scenarios where direct links are highly probable.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Screening for resistance to Phytophthora

    Get PDF
Identifying and evaluating disease resistance depends on rapid, reliable and robust bioassays that can rapidly screen large numbers of genotypes and breeding progenies. We developed seedling, leaf and stem bioassays to screen durian germplasm from Thailand, Vietnam and Australia for resistance to Phytophthora palmivora. Detached leaf assays segregated durian cultivars into classes consistent with field observations, and are recommended as an early screen in breeding programs. Durian cultivar Chanee emerged as the least susceptible cultivar in Thai and Vietnamese tests

Autophagy Inhibitor Chloroquine Downmodulates Hepatic Stellate Cell Activation and Liver Damage in Bile-Duct-Ligated Mice

Hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation via the autophagy pathway is a critical factor in liver fibrogenesis. This study tests the hypothesis that chloroquine (CQ) treatment can prevent autophagy and HSC activation in vitro and in vivo in bile-duct-ligated (BDL) mice. Sham-operated and BDL mice were treated with either PBS or CQ in two 60 mg/kg doses the day (D) before and after surgery. On day 2 (2D), HSCs were isolated, and their biological activities were evaluated by measuring intracellular lipid content, alpha-sma/collagen, and expression of autophagy lc3, sqstm1/p62 markers. The treatment efficacy on liver function was evaluated with serum albumin, transaminases (AST/ALT), and hepatic histology. Primary HSCs were treated in vitro for 24 h with CQ at 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 30, and 50 mu M. Autophagy and HSC activation were assessed after 2D of treatment. CQ treatment improved serum AST/ALT, albumin, and bile duct proliferation in 2D BDL mice. This is associated with a suppression of HSC activation, shown by higher HSC lipid content and collagen I staining, along with the blockage of HSC autophagy indicated by an increase in p62 level and reduction in lc3 staining. CQ 5 mu M inhibited autophagy in primary HSCs in vitro by increasing p62 and lc3 accumulation, thereby suppressing their in vitro activation. The autophagy inhibitor CQ reduced HSC activation in vitro and in vivo. CQ improved liver function and reduced liver injury in BDL mice

The dust un-biased cosmic star formation history from the 20 cm VLA-COSMOS survey

We derive the cosmic star formation history (CSFH) out to z=1.3 using a sample of ~350 radio-selected star-forming galaxies, a far larger sample than in previous, similar studies. We attempt to differentiate between radio emission from AGN and star-forming galaxies, and determine an evolving 1.4 GHz luminosity function based on these VLA-COSMOS star forming galaxies. We precisely measure the high-luminosity end of the star forming galaxy luminosity function (SFR>100 M_Sol/yr; equivalent to ULIRGs) out to z=1.3, finding a somewhat slower evolution than previously derived from mid-infrared data. We find that more stars are forming in luminous starbursts at high redshift. We use extrapolations based on the local radio galaxy luminosity function; assuming pure luminosity evolution, we derive L(1+z)2.1±0.2L_* \propto (1+z)^{2.1 \pm 0.2} or L(1+z)2.5±0.1L_* \propto (1+z)^{2.5 \pm 0.1}, depending on the choice of the local radio galaxy luminosity function. Thus, our radio-derived results independently confirm the ~1 order of magnitude decline in the CSFH since z~1.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures; submitted to ApJ (revised following the referee report

Mid- and Far-infrared Luminosity Functions and Galaxy Evolution from Multiwavelength Spitzer Observations up to z~2.5

[Abridged]We exploit a large homogeneous dataset to derive a self-consistent picture of IR emission based on the time-dependent 24, 15, 12 and 8micron monochromatic and bolometric IR luminosity functions (LF) over the 0<z<2.5 redshift range. Our analysis is based on the combination of data from deep Spitzer surveys in the VVDS-SWIRE and GOODS areas. To our limiting flux of S(24)=400microJy our derived sample in VVDS-SWIRE includes 1494 sources, and 666 and 904 sources brighter than S(24)=80microJy are catalogued in GOODS-S and GOODS-N, respectively, for a total area of ~0.9 square degs. We obtain reliable optical identifications and redshifts, providing us a rich and robust dataset for our luminosity function determination. Based on the multi-wavelength information available, we constrain the LFs at 8, 12, 15 and 24micron. We also extrapolate total IR luminosities from our best-fit to the observed SEDs of each source, and use this to derive the bolometric LF and comoving volume emissivity up to z~2.5. In the 0<z<1 interval, the bolometric IR luminosity density evolves as (1+z)^3.8+/-0.4. Although more uncertain at higher-z, our results show a flattening of the IR luminosity density at z>1. The mean redshift of the peak in the source number density shifts with luminosity: the brighest IR galaxies appear to be forming stars earlier in cosmic time (z>1.5), while the less luminous ones keep doing it at more recent epochs (z~1 for L(IR)<10^11L_sun). Our results suggest a rapid increase of the galaxy IR comoving volume emissivity back to z~1 and a constant average emissivity at z>1. We also seem to find a difference in the evolution rate of the source number densities as a function of luminosity, a downsizing evolutionary pattern similar to that reported from other samples of cosmic sources.Comment: Accepted for pubblicantion in Astronomy and Astrophysic

The evolution of submillimetre galaxies: two populations and a redshift cut-off

    Get PDF
We explore the epoch dependence of number density and star-formation rate for submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) found at 850 um. The study uses a sample of 38 SMG in the GOODS-N field, for which cross-waveband identifications have been obtained for 35/38 members together with redshift measurements or estimates. A maximum-likelihood analysis is employed, along with the `single-source-survey' technique. We find a diminution in both space density and star formation rate at z > 3, closely mimicking the redshift cut-offs found for QSOs selected in different wavebands. The diminution in redshift is particularly marked, at a significance level too small to measure. The data further suggest, at a significance level of about 0.001, that two separately-evolving populations may be present, with distinct luminosity functions. These results parallel the different evolutionary behaviours of LIRGs and ULIRGs, and represent another manifestation of `cosmic down-sizing', suggesting that differential evolution extends to the most extreme star-forming galaxies.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted. The new version, as accepted for MNRAS, is substantially revised, with more detail on sample selection as well as extended significance tests of the result

Facile Solution Route to Synthesize Nanostructure Li 4

High rate Li-ion batteries have been given great attention during the last decade as a power source for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs, EVs, etc.) due to the highest energy and power density. These lithium batteries required a new design of material structure as well as innovative electrode materials. Among the promising candidates, spinel Li4Ti5O12 has been proposed as a high rate anode to replace graphite anode because of high capacity and a negligible structure change during intercalation of lithium. In this work, we synthesized a spinel Li4Ti5O12 in nanosize by a solution route using LiOH and Ti(OBu)4 as precursor. An evaluation of structure and morphology by XRD and SEM exhibited pure spinel phase Li4Ti5O12 and homogenous nanoparticles around 100 nm. In the charge-discharge test, nanospinel Li4Ti5O12 presents excellent discharge capacity 160 mAh/g at rate C/10, as well as good specific capacities of 120, 110, and 100 mAh/g at high rates C, 5C and 10C, respectively
