    A Note on Log Concave Survivor Functions in Auctions

    In a standard English auction in which bidders’ valuations are independently drawn from a common distribution, a standard regularity condition is that the survivor function of the distribution be log concave. In an auction where the seller sets a fixed price, the equivalent condition requires log concavity of a survivor function derived from the primitive distribution. In this note we show that log concavity of the primitive survivor function implies log concavity in the derived functions. This result is of interest when studying on-line auctions that combined aspects of fixed-price and English auctions.English Auction; Log Concavity; Survivor Function

Now let j be a random variable, determined by the binomial distribution. Specifically, let there be n potential competitors for the consumer in the lottery, each with an independent probability of ? of being a competitor.     Establishing the reliability and validity of the diet culture beliefs scale

    Includes bibliographical references.2022 Fall.Throughout history, human bodies have evolved to represent status, wealth, and morality through their shape and size. Although body objectification occurs across the gender spectrum, women have historically experienced the most pressure to fit whatever sociocultural norms are current. In recent decades, women whose bodies are thin and toned are often more highly valued in United States society than those who are in larger bodies. Efforts to transform and maintain the ideal body are rampant among women and include restrictive diets, excessive exercise, and pharmaceutical or surgical interventions. Dieting has become a pervasive part of United States culture. Research has shown that dieting is a strong predictor of eating disorders. Eating disorders account for more deaths than most mental illnesses, second only to opioid addiction. Eating disorders and disordered eating exist in people of all shapes and sizes, ethnic, and sociocultural backgrounds, but they often go undiagnosed because of the sociocultural stigma that only emaciated, young, wealthy, White women suffer from them. Early detection of eating disorders is crucial for successful treatment and intervention. This study explored the development of a new scale, the Diet Culture Beliefs Scale, by assessing its reliability and validity as a measure of individuals' internalized beliefs about the ways in which food and body size are indicative of morality and health. The goal of this study was to contribute a tool to both the body of research and clinical practice that may help medical and mental health providers identify warning signs of eating disorder development. Study results indicated that the Diet Culture Beliefs Scale retained its originally identified three-factor structure as evidenced by a Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Additionally, the Diet Culture Beliefs Scale showed both test- retest and internal consistency reliability, suggesting that it consistently measures diet culture beliefs over time and across items. Finally, the Diet Culture Beliefs Scale showed criterion- related, convergent, and discriminant validity suggesting that it is an accurate measure of diet culture as a unique construct. As such, the Diet Culture Beliefs Scale should be considered a psychometrically sound tool to support researchers and clinicians better understand the relationship between diet culture and eating disorders, as well as to provide early detection of eating disorder risk factors

    The Fixed Price Offer (FPO) mechanism in Trade Me auctions allows sellers to make a take-it-or-leave-it offer at the conclusion of an unsuccessful auction. We investigate the effects of the FPO option on strategies and outcomes in independent-value auctions. The FPO option induces some bidders with a value above the seller’s reserve to wait for an FPO instead of bidding. Overall, the FPO option increases the probability of sale but reduces expected seller revenue compared to a standard auction.     035— Working Memory and Locomotor Activity in Old and Young Mice Fed a Ketogenic Diet

    The ketogenic diet (KD), a high-fat, low-carb diet, has recently been used to treat disorders associated with an inflexibility of cognitive and behavioral routines, such as dementia and autism spectrum disorder. However, there has been little investigation into how KD’s beneficial effects on cognitive behavior may change with age. Here, we show the effects of KD on performance in a working memory task and locomotor activity in young and old C57BL6/J mice. In Experiment 1, we used a Barnes Maze to assess working memory. In the Barnes Maze, mice locate an escape box under a target hole by using spatial cues. Each day the target hole is moved to a new location. We found that mice on KD performed better, indicated by shorter latencies to find the target hole. However, only the young mice on KD made fewer errors. To check for differences in activity between mice on KD and mice fed a normal diet, Experiment 2 employed a 1h locomotor test. KD increased horizontal activity in young and old mice. Thus, regardless of age, mice fed KD performed better in a working memory task and were more active. Findings may be useful for using KD as a therapy

    Resistance to BRAF inhibitors induces glutamine dependency in melanoma cells

    BRAF inhibitors can extend progression-free and overall survival in melanoma patients whose tumors harbor mutations in BRAF. However, the majority of patients eventually develop resistance to these drugs. Here we show that BRAF mutant melanoma cells that have developed acquired resistance to BRAF inhibitors display increased oxidative metabolism and increased dependency on mitochondria for survival. Intriguingly, the increased oxidative metabolism is associated with a switch from glucose to glutamine metabolism and an increased dependence on glutamine over glucose for proliferation. We show that the resistant cells are more sensitive to mitochondrial poisons and to inhibitors of glutaminolysis, suggesting that targeting specific metabolic pathways may offer exciting therapeutic opportunities to treat resistant tumors, or to delay emergence of resistance in the first-line setting

    Biomarkers of aging associated with past treatments in breast cancer survivors.

    Radiation and chemotherapy are effective treatments for cancer, but are also toxic to healthy cells. Little is known about whether prior exposure to these treatments is related to markers of cellular aging years later in breast cancer survivors. We examined whether past exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment was associated with DNA damage, telomerase activity, and telomere length 3-6 years after completion of primary treatments in breast cancer survivors (stage 0-IIIA breast cancer at diagnosis). We also examined the relationship of these cellular aging markers with plasma levels of Interleukin (IL)-6, soluble TNF-receptor-II (sTNF-RII), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Ninety-four women (36.4-69.5 years; 80% white) were evaluated. Analyses adjusting for age, race, BMI, and years from last treatment found that women who had prior exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiation compared to women who had previously received surgery alone were more likely to have higher levels of DNA damage (P = .02) and lower telomerase activity (P = .02), but did not have differences in telomere length. More DNA damage and lower telomerase were each associated with higher levels of sTNF-RII (P's < .05). We found that exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiation 3-6 years prior was associated with markers of cellular aging, including higher DNA damage and lower telomerase activity, in post-treatment breast cancer survivors. Furthermore, these measures were associated with elevated inflammatory activation, as indexed by sTNF-RII. Given that these differences were observed many years after the treatment, the findings suggest a long lasting effect of chemotherapy and/or radiation exposure
