TYA Adaptations for the Theatre Educator

    Get PDF
Over the last century, adaptations in the field of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) have been the subject of some debate. While adaptations are currently the most produced type of play by children’s theatre companies and professional theatre organizations, original TYA scripts are the ones that receive the majority of the praise and acclaim, In addition, theatre educators throughout the United States struggle to produce quality plays with the limited funds they have been allotted. This paper serves multiple purposes. It aims to give theatre educators the tools they need to overcome the stigmatized opinions of adapted works. Additionally, it highlights the financial and educational benefits for teachers who write their own adaptations for use in the classroom and on stage. Using writing techniques and methods from some of the best playwrights and adaptors in the TYA world, theatre educators will be able to create meaningful, challenging works adapted from children’s literature

The Effects of Reader\u27s Theater on Reading Comprehension and Fluency of Fifth-Grade Students

    Get PDF
According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, an estimated 75% of students who are poor readers in 3rd grade continue to be poor readers in 9th grade. Although much research has been conducted on this topic, engaging and successful reading programs that put theory into practice are scarce. Reader\u27s theater is a strategy students use to collaborate, rehearse, and critique one another while the teacher offers support and modeling. The research questions addressed the effectiveness of using Reader\u27s Theater to improve scores in reading fluency and comprehension. LaBerge and Samuels\u27 automaticity theory was used as the theoretical foundation for the study. A quasi-experimental control group design was used with a convenience sample of 50 students from 2 fifth-grade classrooms. Preexisting pre- and posttest scores of fluency and comprehension were analyzed using a t test. The results showed no significant differences among groups in their gain scores; however, in regards to comprehension, there was 0.40 point gain among students with disabilities. Findings were presented to stakeholders through a program evaluation report, which recommended the continuation of Reader\u27s Theater during the 2015-2016 school year. While findings were not significant, they do support social change by giving teachers a valid reason to engage readers in meaningful, repeated readings that can increase reading comprehension and enable both struggling and thriving students to better comprehend text and become higher achieving readers

Social Status Inflation, Narcissism, and Aggression: The Role of Peer Victimization as a Potential Moderator

    Get PDF
Much literature relates social status inflation and narcissism to aggression in children, especially pertaining to peer relationships. The literature does not yet address how these concepts may be impacted by peer victimization. Both children with higher levels of social status inflation and narcissism have been found to be sensitive to ego threats (Barry, Grafeman, Bader, & Davis, 2011). The current study tests the theory that children with higher levels of social status inflation and children with higher levels of narcissism tend to elicit negative feedback from their peers, which may take the form of peer victimization. Additionally, an inflated sense of self may relate to an increase in aggression concurrently and with time. For the current study, it was hypothesized that peer victimization would moderate the relation between social status inflation and aggression as well as the relation between narcissism and aggression. Using archival data, 143 fifth graders were screened by teachers for initial moderate to high levels of aggression. Data from two time points were used. Narcissism and social status inflation were found to be strongly positively related to Time 1 proactive aggression, reactive aggression, and peer fighting. Furthermore, narcissism was found to be a unique predictor of an increase in all three aggression outcomes at Time 2. Peer victimization was not found to relate to any of the three aggression outcomes. A combination of high social status inflation and low peer victimization led to the highest increases in peer fighting at Time 2. These findings have important theoretical and clinical implications

Beyonce Feminism: Feminist Messages\u27 Impact on African American Female Identity

    Get PDF
This study examines the influence of Beyoncé’s brand of Black Feminism on the sexual decision making and agency among African American female millennials. This study explores how young African American women interpret and are influence by Beyoncé’s treatment of race, class, and gender as sites of power and privilege. The study targets fourteen (14) Black women ages 18 to 25 who are attending Georgia State University. Narrative inquiry was used to capture participants’ stories via structured interviews. The study’s findings have implications for several arenas of research including sexual communication studies, African American male-female relationships, and gender studies

Microwave Plasma Surface Modifications of Carbon Fibers

    Get PDF
Fiber-polymer matrix interfaces are critical components of high performance composite materials. In this thesis we utilized microwave plasma surface reactions in the presence of maleic anhydride to functionalize carbon fiber surfaces. As a result, carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups were generated, which facilitated covalent bonding to epoxy-based polymer matrices. Raman and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the fiber surfaces, whereas mechanical properties of newly formed interfaces were assessed using shear stress analysis. These studies show that using solventless microwave plasma surface modifications, interfacial mechanical properties of carbon fiber-epoxy matrix can be enhanced by ~ 6%. The broader impact of these studies is that microwave plasma fiber surface modifications can be utilized to functionalize other polymeric and inorganic fibers, with an ultimate goal of enhancing composite interfacial and overall properties

Cybervictimization as a Predictor of Aggression and Cyberbullying among Adolescents: Examination of Potential Risk and Protective Factors

    Get PDF
The current study examined how cybervictimization is related to aggression outcomes among adolescents. The current study also examined various potential risk and protective factors, including depressive symptoms, anger rumination, impulsivity, social support, and gender. It was hypothesized that the relation between cybervictimization and aggression or cyberbullying would be intensified when levels of depressive symptoms, impulsivity, and anger rumination were higher and that the relation between cybervictimization and aggression or cyberbullying would be attenuated when levels of social support were higher. Gender was examined as a research question, with no specific directionality hypothesized. The data for the current study were collected from parents and adolescents via an internet survey site. In total, 144 adolescents (69 males, 75 females, M = 14.90 years) and their parents (recruited from the community) completed the survey and were included in the study. Moderated multiple regression analyses were used to examine the effects of the various moderators on the relation between cybervictimization and aggression or cyberbullying. No significant interactions involving anger rumination or impulsivity were found. However, significant interactions involving depressive symptoms, social support, and gender were found when investigating the relation between cybervictimization and aggression or cyberbullying. The finding that cybervictimization relates to aggression and cyberbullying differentially, depending on gender and levels of depression and social support, could be particularly valuable when treating aggression and/or cyberbullying in adolescents, emphasizing a need to target mood and relational concerns

The Royal College of Art collaborated with British Airways to explore the next 100 years of aviation. An exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, London (1–26 August 2019) & Shanghai Future Lab, West Bund Art Centre (25 Nov–1 Dec 2019) showcased collaborative projects from students across the College that imagine the flight of the future, based on an in-depth research report commissioned by British Airways to mark their centenary. Our idea was to create a body of work that was visionary and that engaged people in conversation and debate about the future. With in-depth global research at its heart, our programme, BA 2119, was a first-of-its-kind exhibition looking to the next 100 years of aviation, through three lenses; aircraft, experience and people, also focused on sustainability and technology to drive change
