Realization of Artificial Ice Systems for Magnetic Vortices in a Superconducting MoGe Thin-film with Patterned Nanostructures

We report an anomalous matching effect in MoGe thin films containing pairs of circular holes arranged in such a way that four of those pairs meet at each vertex point of a square lattice. A remarkably pronounced fractional matching was observed in the magnetic field dependences of both the resistance and the critical current. At the half matching field the critical current can be even higher than that at zero field. This has never been observed before for vortices in superconductors with pinning arrays. Numerical simulations within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory reveal a square vortex ice configuration in the ground state at the half matching field and demonstrate similar characteristic features in the field dependence of the critical current, confirming the experimental realization of an artificial ice system for vortices for the first time.Comment: To appear in Phys. Using tunable vacuum-UV radiation from a synchrotron, negative ions are detected by quadrupolar mass spectrometry following photoexcitation of three gaseous halogenated methanes CH3_3X (X = F,Cl,Br). The anions X^-, H^-, CX^-, CHX^- and CH2_2X^- are observed, and their ion yields recorded in the range 8-35 eV. The anions show a linear dependence of signal with pressure, showing that they arise from unimolecular ion-pair dissociation, generically described as AB + hvv \rightarrow A^- + B+^+ (+ neutrals). Absolute cross sections for ion-pair formation are obtained by calibrating the signal intensities with those of F^- from both SF6_6 and CF4_4. The cross sections for formation of X^- + CH3_3+^+ are much greater than for formation of CH2_2X^- + H+^+. In common with many quadrupoles, the spectra of mm/zz 1 (H^-) anions show contributions from all anions, and only for CH3_3Br is it possible to perform the necessary subtraction to obtain the true H^- spectrum. The anion cross sections are normalised to vacuum-UV absorption cross sections to obtain quantum yields for their production. The appearance energies of X^- and CH2_2X^- are used to calculate upper limits to 298 K bond dissociation energies for Do^o (H3_3C-X) and Do^o (XH2_2C-H) which are consistent with literature values. The spectra suggest that most of the anions are formed indirectly by crossing of Rydberg states of the parent molecule onto an ion-pair continuum. The one exception is the lowest-energy peak of F^- from CH3_3F at 13.4 eV, where its width and lack of structure suggest it may correspond to a direct ion-pair transition

    Vacuum-UV negative photoion spectroscopy of CF3Cl, CF3Br and CF3I

Using synchrotron radiation negative ions have been detected by mass spectrometry following vacuum-UV photoexcitation of trifluorochloromethane (CF3_3Cl), trifluorobromomethane (CF3_3Br) and trifluoroiodomethane (CF3_3I). The anions F^-, X^-, F2_2^-, FX^-, CF^-, CF2_2^- and CF3_3^- were observed from all three molecules, where X = Cl, Br or I, and their ion yields recorded in the range 8-35 eV. With the exception of Br^- and I^-, the anions observed show a linear dependence of signal with pressure, showing that they arise from unimolecular ion-pair dissociation. Dissociative electron attachment, following photoionization of CF3_3Br and CF3_3I as the source of low-energy electrons, is shown to dominate the observed Br^- and I^- signals, respectively. Cross sections for ion-pair formation are put on to an absolute scale by calibrating the signal strengths with those of F^- from both SF6_6 and CF4_4. These anion cross sections are normalized to vacuum-UV absorption cross sections, where available, and the resulting quantum yields are reported. Anion appearance energies are used to calculate upper limits to 298 K bond dissociation energies for D0D^0(CF3_3-X) which are consistent with literature values. We report new data for D0D^0(CF2_2I^--F) ≤ 2.7 ± 0.2 eV and ΔfH2980\Delta_fH^0_{298} (CF2_2I+^+) ≤ (598 ± 22) kJ mol1^{-1}. No ion-pair formation is observed below the ionization energy of the parent molecule for CF3_3Cl and CF3_3Br, and only weak signals (in both I^- and F^-) are detected for CF3_3I. These observations suggest neutral photodissociation is the dominant exit channel to Rydberg state photoexcitation at these lower energies

Project Energize: intervention development and 10 years of progress in preventing childhood obesity

Prevention of childhood obesity is a global priority. The school setting offers access to large numbers of children and the ability to provide supportive environments for quality physical activity and nutrition. This article describes Project Energize, a through-school physical activity and nutrition programme that celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2015 so that it might serve as a model for similar practices, initiatives and policies elsewhere. The programme was envisaged and financed by the Waikato District Health Board of New Zealand in 2004 and delivered by Sport Waikato to 124 primary schools as a randomised controlled trial from 2005 to 2006. The programme has since expanded to include all 242 primary schools in the Waikato region and 70 schools in other regions, including 53,000 children. Ongoing evaluation and development of Project Energize has shown it to be sustainable (ongoing for >10 years), both effective (lower obesity, higher physical fitness) and cost effective (one health related cost quality adjusted life year between 18,000and18,000 and 30,000) and efficient ($45/child/year) as a childhood 'health' programme. The programme's unique community-based approach is inclusive of all children, serving a population that is 42 % Ma¯ori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. While the original nine healthy eating and seven quality physical activity goals have not changed, the delivery and assessment processes has been refined and the health service adapted over the 10 years of the programme existence, as well as adapted over time to other settings including early childhood education and schools in Cork in Ireland. Evaluation and research associated with the programme delivery and outcomes are ongoing. The dissemination of findings to politicians and collaboration with other service providers are both regarded as priorities

    Fermion mixing in quasi-free states

Quantum field theoretic treatments of fermion oscillations are typically restricted to calculations in Fock space. In this letter we extend the oscillation formulae to include more general quasi-free states, and also consider the case when the mixing is not unitary.Comment: 10 pages, Plain Te

Background Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and sodium fluoride augment oral hygiene by inactivating bacteria and inhibiting enamel demineralisation, respectively. However, there are few reports in the literature documenting the antibacterial efficacy of their combined use in mouthrinses. We have used six experimental systems to compare the antibacterial effects of mouthrinses containing 0.075 % CPC (test rinse, TR) or 0.075 % CPC with sodium fluoride (test fluoride rinse, TFR). Results Effects against planktonic bacteria were determined using viable counting (for Streptococcus mutans and salivary bacteria), a redox dye (for Actinomyces viscosus and salivary bacteria) and viable counting (for ex vivo oral rinses). Effects against saliva-derived biofilms were quantified using confocal microscopy and differential viable counting. Inhibition of biofilm formation was evaluated by pre-treating hydroxyapatite coupons with mouthrinses prior to inoculation. Otherwise-identical controls without CPC (control rinse and control fluoride rinse, CR and CFR, respectively), were included throughout. Compared to the controls, TFR and TR demonstrated significant antimicrobial effects in the redox assays, by viable counts (>3 log reductions) and in oral rinse samples (>1.25 log reductions, p 3 log difference, p < 0.05). Overall, there were no consistent differences in the activities of TR and TFR. Conclusions Sodium fluoride did not influence the antibacterial and anti-biofilm potency of CPC-containing formulations, supporting the combined use of CPC and sodium fluoride in mouthrinses to control oral bacteria and protect tooth enamel

Natural history of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the United Kingdom: a descriptive study using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink

Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, muscle-degenerative disease predominantly affecting males. Natural history models capture the full disease pathway under current care and combine with estimates of new interventions’ effects to assess cost-effectiveness by health technology decision-makers. These models require mortality estimates throughout a patient's lifetime, but rare disease datasets typically contain relatively few patients with short follow-ups. Alternative (published) sources of mortality data may therefore be required. Methods: The Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) was evaluated as a source of mortality and natural history data for future economic evaluations of health technologies for DMD and rare diseases in general in the UK population. This retrospective longitudinal cohort study provides flexible parametric estimates of mortality rates and survival probabilities in the current UK DMD population through primary/secondary records in the CPRD since 1990. It also investigates clinically significant milestones such as corticosteroid use, spinal surgery, and cardiomyopathy in these patients. Results: A total of 1121 male patients were included in the study, observed from 0.7 to 48.9 years. Median life expectancy was 25.64 years (95% confidence interval 24.73, 26.47), consistent with previous global estimates. This has improved to 26.47 (25.16, 27.89) years in patients born after 1990. The median ages at corticosteroid initiation, spinal surgery, ventilation, and cardiomyopathy diagnosis were 6.06 years (5.77, 6.29), 14.79 years (14.29, 15.09), 16.97 years (16.50, 18.31), and 15.26 years (14.22, 16.70), respectively. Conclusions: Estimates of mortality in UK-based DMD patients are age-specific in a uniquely large and nationally representative sample from the CPRD

Cognitive performance profiles by latent classes of drug use

Background and Objectives: The relationship between substance use and cognitive deficits is complex and requires innovative methods to enhance understanding. The present study is the first to use LCA to examine associations of drug use patterns with cognitive performance. Methods: Cocaine/heroin users (N = 552) completed questionnaires, and cognitive measures. LCA identified classes based on past-month drug use and adjusted for probabilities of group membership when examining cognitive performance. Latent indicators were: alcohol (ALC), cigarettes (CIG), marijuana (MJ), crack smoking (CS), nasal heroin (NH), injection cocaine (IC), injection heroin (IH), and injection speedball (IS). Age and education were included as covariates in model creation. Results: Bootstrap likelihood ratio test (BLRT) supported a 5-class model. Prevalent indicators (estimated probability of over 50%) for each class are as follows: “Older Nasal Heroin/Crack Smokers” (ONH/CS, n = 166.9): ALC, CIG, NH, CS; “Older, Less Educated Polysubstance” (OLEP, n = 54.8): ALC, CIG, CS, IH, IC, and IS; “Younger Multi-Injectors” (MI, n = 128.7): ALC, CIG, MJ, IH, IC, and IS; “Less Educated Heroin Injectors” (LEHI, n = 87.4): CIG, IH; and “More Educated Nasal Heroin” users (MENH, n = ALC, CIG, NH. In general, all classes performed worse than established norms and older, less educated classes performed worse, with the exception that MENH demonstrated worse cognitive flexibility than YMI. Discussion and Conclusions: This study demonstrated novel applications of a methodology for examining complicated relationships between polysubstance use and cognitive performance. Scientific Significance: Education and/or nasal heroin use are associated with reduced cognitive flexibility in this sample of inner city drug users
