    Inter- and intra-annual patterns of seed rain in the black spruce stands of Quebec, Canada

    Divergent reproductive strategies of tree species generate differences in the dynamics of seed production and dispersion. The spatial and temporal variability in seed rain abundance and viability was monitored during the period 2000-2007 in four boreal stands in Quebec, Canada. The aim was to compare the inter-and intra-annual patterns of seed dispersal between species with diverging adaptive characteristics and reproductive strategies by testing the hypothesis that sympatric species can exhibit different patterns of seed dispersal according to specific ecological adaptations. The coefficient of variation (CV), representing the inter-annual variability in seed rain, was close to or higher than 1 in balsam fir (Abies balsamea [L.] P. Mill.) and white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) and confirmed the mast seeding habit of the two species. In contrast, CV in black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] BSP) ranged between 0.24 and 0.54, indicating a more homogeneous inter-annual amount of seed dispersal because of its semiserotinous cones that preserve seeds for an indefinite period of time. The species showed divergent intra-annual patterns of seed dispersal. Most seed dispersal of the companion species was observed in September-November, while black spruce concentrated seed rain in spring, when the proportion of germinated seeds was higher. Boreal stands experience annual seed rains constituted by a gradual dispersal of seeds of different ages and originating from cones belonging to multiple cohorts. However, asynchronous seed rains in terms of quantity and quality can occur if companion species are associated to the dominant black spruce

    Spatially explicit structure of natural stands dominated by black spruce

    Black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP] regeneration emerges in clusters near the pre-existing boles within a few years after the passage of fire. This paper tested the hypothesis that black spruce forests still maintain the spatial structure deriving from postfire stand initiation. Trees and saplings were monitored during 2000-2007 and the horizontal and vertical structure of the stands were investigated on four permanent plots in the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. Plots showed 1300-2150 trees ha-1, and were composed of trees with homogeneous sizes and a very small proportion of saplings. These characteristics identify single cohorts generated by complete, or almost-complete, stand replacement by fire. Ripley's L(r) functions showed that the spatial pattern of trees and saplings ranged from random to aggregated, thus demonstrating that the clustering distribution of the individuals in black spruce forests can be maintained even after 80-120 years from stand initiation. These findings could results from incomplete self-thinning or from an environment with heterogeneous distribution of resources. The practices of ecosystem management recently developed in Eastern Canada should take into account both the horizontal and vertical structure to better modulate the competition among individuals during partial harvesting

    Abstract The chronology of spruce budworm (Choristoneurafumiferana (Clem.)) oubreaks for the past 200 years has been reconstructed by dendrochronological analysis of balsam fir (Abiesbalsamea (L.) Mill.) and white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss) samples from virgin forests, unaffected by insecticide spraying programs and recently protected against fires in the north and northwest of Lac Saint-Jean. Outbreaks began around 1974, 1944, 1909, and possibly, 1832. They are closely linked with those described in the Laurentide wildlife reserve. The frequency, duration and severity of growth rings suppression associated with outbreaks are similar to those registered during outbreaks in the southern forests, except for the 1974 outbreak, which was shorter and less severe. Other outbreaks registered in southern regions, where the proportion of balsam fir is higher, have reached this region where balsam fir populations are marginal. These results underline the importance of these ecological disturbances in the population dynamics of the host trees of the region. La frĂ©quence, la durĂ©e et l'intensitĂ© des ralentissements de croissance associĂ©s aux Ă©pidĂ©mies sont comparables aux ralentissements enregistrĂ©s pendant les Ă©pidĂ©mies qui ont sĂ©vi dans les forĂȘts plus mĂ©ridionales, sauf pour l'Ă©pidĂ©mie de 1974, qui a Ă©tĂ© moins longue et moins sĂ©vĂšre.     Seedling bank dynamics in boreal balsam fir forests

    The seedling banks of 14 balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands of various ages affected to different degrees by the last spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) outbreak were studied in the boreal zone north of Lake Saint-Jean, Quebec. The objectives of the study were to (1) characterize the age structure of fir seedling populations, (2) observe possible links between the seedling age structure and that of the arborescent stratum, and (3) evaluate the impact of the last spruce budworm outbreak on the age structure of seedlings and compare it with the mortality dates of overstory trees. Seedling age structure and mortality distribution of the overstory trees were established. The stands all originated following one of the region's outbreaks that occurred either in the late nineteenth or in the twentieth century. Seedling age structures had normal distributions centered on 20 years and, as for mortality distributions of the overstory trees, they were very similar between the stands. Few significant relationships were observed between the seedling age structures, the density of the stands, and the mortality distributions. There were relationships between the quantity of fir trees and the mortality and between the seedling ages and overstory tree ages. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the similarity of the seedling banks: (1) the seedling bank is always being renewed by a turnover process and (2) the bank establishes and grows to a certain point corresponding generally to 20 growth rings or 20 terminal bud scars, and then it stagnates. Results from this study and field observations suggest that the seedling bank dynamics could be, at least in part, based on a strategy that enables the fir to remain under cover for long periods. This strategy would imply a momentary lack of radial and apical growth

    Chronology of spruce budworm outbreaks near Lake Duparquet, Abitibi region, Quebec

    The chronology of eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana was determined for 200 yr using dendroecological methods. Growth patterns of two budworm host species, balsam fir Abies balsamea and white spruce Picea glauca were compared with white cedar Thuja occidentalis, a nonhost species, and with maps of defoliation surveys. Growth reductions associated with insect defolation situated three outbreak periods in this century between 1970-1987, between 1930-1950, and between 1919-1929. A fourth outbreak period may have occurred between 1810-1832. The outbreaks in this region were less severe than those that have occurred further south of the insect's northern limit of dispersion, but they did have a major impact on the dynamics of balsam fir populations in the region, as revealed by a massive invasion of fir between 1915-1940, and a marked growth release between 1940-1950. Dry periods, reflected in the growth curve of cedar, were associated with recorded outbreak periods

    Episodic recruitment of the seedling banks in balsam fir and white spruce

    Premise of the study: In ecosystems where seed production is low and masting years are sporadic, or with species that have short-lived seeds, regeneration is assured by seedling banks rather than seed banks. Seedling establishment and survival play a critical role in determining the composition of these plant communities by supplying new individuals for their maintenance. Seedling emergence and mortality were investigated to test the hypothesis that recruitment into the seedling bank is periodic. Materials and methods: Seed production and seedling emergence and survival was monitored during 1994-2007 in balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and white spruce (Picea glauca) in four pristine stands of the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. Measurements were collected twice per month by sampling one permanent plot of 20 × 20 m per stand. Key results: Seed-rain abundance reached 9 × 103 seeds m-2 year-1, and was characterized by synchronous sequences of low and high seed production. New seedlings appeared only during the year following a seed production of at least 1 × 103 and 1.5 × 102 seeds m-2 year-1 for balsam fir and white spruce, respectively. Seedlings emerged in July and survived 34-52 d on average, with balsam fir showing a longer lifespan and lower mortality, although 85-99% of seedlings died before completing one year of life. Conclusions: The emergence of young seedlings was coupled with massive seed rains, which allowed synchronous replenishment of the seedling banks among stands and species, and generated different cohorts, yielding a discontinuous age structure

    Testing masting mechanisms of boreal forest species at different stand densities

    Mast seeding is considered a reproductive trait resulting from several potential evolutionary forces. Although the mechanisms driving reproduction have been thoroughly investigated and discussed, their relative importance and possible coexistence remain an open question. Seed rain abundance and viability of balsam fir Abies balsamea, white spruce Picea glauca, and white birch Betula papyrifera were monitored during 1994-2007 along a chronosequence of developmental stages at different densities represented by four stands in the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. The aim of the study was to verify whether seeding temporal dynamics and abundance were affected by stand density, and to test the causal relationships between the hypotheses of pollination efficiency and predator satiation. Seed rain abundance varied substantially among years and species, with the highest values being observed in 1994 and 1996, and attaining up to 28.2 × 10 3 seeds m -2 year -1. However, the annual dynamics of seed production was similar in the three sites with the higher densities. The greater proportions of germinating and dead seeds were observed in white birch, while balsam fir showed an average of 11.2% of damaged seeds, which were infected by larvae. The conifer species had the higher proportions of empty seeds. The causal models tested on balsam fir demonstrated that seed rain abundance influenced the amount of both viable and larval-infected seeds, although no causal relationship existed between these last two variables. The comparable and synchronous seed rain abundances observed among sites demonstrated that stand density can significantly affect the reproduction of trees, probably by limiting the access to resources, but not the annual dynamics of seeding. Pollination efficiency and predator satiation are important forces in the reproductive effort of trees and could be not mutually exclusive because both these mechanisms of natural selection synergistically coexist in driving the seeding dynamics of balsam fir
