Footprints of Statistical Anisotropies
We propose and develop a formalism to describe and constrain statistically
anisotropic primordial perturbations. Starting from a decomposition of the
primordial power spectrum in spherical harmonics, we find how the temperature
fluctuations observed in the CMB sky are directly related to the coefficients
in this harmonic expansion. Although the angular power spectrum does not
discriminate between statistically isotropic and anisotropic perturbations, it
is possible to define analogous quadratic estimators that are direct measures
of statistical anisotropy. As a simple illustration of our formalism we test
for the existence of a preferred direction in the primordial perturbations
using full-sky CMB maps. We do not find significant evidence supporting the

Lamb Wave Modes in Coal-Tar-Coated Steel Plates
In order to study the feasibility of using ultrasonic Lamb wave modes for detection and sizing of corrosion-related flaws in buried steel pipelines, we have calculated Lamb wave modes and performed numerous experiments on steel plates coated on one side with coal-tar enamel. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these theoretical and experimental results
Cosmic Microwave Background, Accelerating Universe and Inhomogeneous Cosmology
We consider a cosmology in which a spherically symmetric large scale
inhomogeneous enhancement or a void are described by an inhomogeneous metric
and Einstein's gravitational equations. For a flat matter dominated universe
the inhomogeneous equations lead to luminosity distance and Hubble constant
formulas that depend on the location of the observer. For a general
inhomogeneous solution, it is possible for the deceleration parameter to differ
significantly from the FLRW result. The deceleration parameter can be
interpreted as ( for a flat matter dominated universe) in a
FLRW universe and be as inferred from the inhomogeneous enhancement
that is embedded in a FLRW universe. A spatial volume averaging of local
regions in the backward light cone has to be performed for the inhomogeneous
solution at late times to decide whether the decelerating parameter can be
negative for a positive energy condition. The CMB temperature fluctuations
across the sky can be unevenly distributed in the northern and southern
hemispheres in the inhomogeneous matter dominated solution, in agreement with
the analysis of the WMAP power spectrum data by several authors. The model can
possibly explain the anomalous alignment of the quadrupole and octopole moments

Parity Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution
The parity of a bit string of length is a global quantity that can be
efficiently compute using a global counter in time. But is it
possible to find the parity using cellular automata with a set of local rule
tables without using any global counter? Here, we report a way to solve this
problem using a number of binary, uniform, parallel and deterministic

Visually targeted reaching in horse-head grasshoppers
Visually targeted reaching to a specific object is a demanding neuronal task requiring the translation of the location of the object from a two-dimensionsal set of retinotopic coordinates to a motor pattern that guides a limb to that point in three-dimensional space. This sensorimotor transformation has been intensively studied in mammals, but was not previously thought to occur in animals with smaller nervous systems such as insects. We studied horse-head grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Proscopididae) crossing gaps and found that visual inputs are sufficient for them to target their forelimbs to a foothold on the opposite side of the gap. High-speed video analysis showed that these reaches were targeted accurately and directly to footholds at different locations within the visual field through changes in forelimb trajectory and body position, and did not involve stereotyped searching movements. The proscopids estimated distant locations using peering to generate motion parallax, a monocular distance cue, but appeared to use binocular visual cues to estimate the distance of nearby footholds. Following occlusion of regions of binocular overlap, the proscopids resorted to peering to target reaches even to nearby locations. Monocular cues were sufficient for accurate targeting of the ipsilateral but not the contralateral forelimb. Thus, proscopids are capable not only of the sensorimotor transformations necessary for visually targeted reaching with their forelimbs but also of flexibly using different visual cues to target reaches. © 2012 The Royal Society
Examining the Link between Crime and Unemployment: A Time Series Analysis for Canada
We use national and regional Canadian data to analyse the relationship between economic activity (as reflected by the unemployment rate) and crime rates. Given potential aggregation bias, we disaggregate the crime data and look at the relationship between six different types of crimes rates and unemployment rate; we also disaggregate the data by region. We employ an error correction model in our analysis to test for short-run and long-run dynamics. We find no evidence of long-run relationship between crime and unemployment, when we look at both disaggregation by type of crime and disaggregation by region. Lack of evidence of a long-run relationship indicates we have no evidence of the motivation hypothesis. For selected types of property crimes, we find some evidence of a significant negative short-run relationship between crime and unemployment, lending support to the opportunity hypothesis. Inclusion of control variables in the panel analysis does not alter the findings, qualitatively or quantitatively
