On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes
The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by
grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is
known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic
Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping
of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then,
sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is
linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio,
IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino
production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as
briefly reviewed in this paper.
The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is
illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino
detector during the year 2000. No significant excess for any of the suggested

Hyperplastic polyps of the duodenum: an unusual histological finding
A 58-year-old man underwent upper gastrointestinal surveillance endoscopy for Barrett’s oesophagus. This showed a possible gastric ulcer, although histological examination was normal. Follow-up endoscopy showed white ridges in the distal duodenum and these were subjected to biopsy. Histological examination of the biopsy specimens showed polypoid duodenal mucosa showing features similar to those of a hyperplastic polyp of the colon. In addition, the mucosal surface was focally of gastric surface type. The features were interpreted overall as most likely to represent an unusual form of regenerative change in the setting of previous chronic inflammatory mucosal damage. The case is presented as an unusual histological phenomenon at this site; it would be important not to overdiagnose neoplasia in this situation
Status of the MIND simulation and analysis
A realistic simulation of the Neutrino Factory detectors is required in order to fully understand the sensitivity of such a facility to the remaining parameters and degeneracies of the neutrino mixing matrix. Here described is the status of a modular software framework being developed to accommodate such a study. The results of initial studies of the reconstruction software and expected efficiency curves in the context of the golden channel are given

LPS binding protein and activation signatures are upregulated during asthma exacerbations in children
Asthma exacerbations in children are associated with respiratory viral infection and atopy, resulting in systemic immune activation and infiltration of immune cells into the airways. The gene networks driving the immune activation and subsequent migration of immune cells into the airways remains incompletely understood. Cellular and molecular profiling of PBMC was employed on paired samples obtained from atopic asthmatic children (n = 19) during acute virus-associated exacerbations and later during convalescence. Systems level analyses were employed to identify coexpression networks and infer the drivers of these networks, and validation was subsequently obtained via independent samples from asthmatic children. During exacerbations, PBMC exhibited significant changes in immune cell abundance and upregulation of complex interlinked networks of coexpressed genes. These were associated with priming of innate immunity, inflammatory and remodelling functions. We identified activation signatures downstream of bacterial LPS, glucocorticoids and TGFB1. We also confirmed that LPS binding protein was upregulated at the protein-level in plasma. Multiple gene networks known to be involved positively or negatively in asthma pathogenesis, are upregulated in circulating PBMC during acute exacerbations, supporting the hypothesis that systemic pre-programming of potentially pathogenic as well as protective functions of circulating immune cells preceeds migration into the airways. Mortality from cerebrovascular disease in a cohort of 23 000 patients with insulin-treated diabetes
Mortality from cerebrovascular disease in a cohort of 23 000 patients with insulin-treated diabetes. Background and Purpose: Disease of the cardiovascular system is the main cause of long-term complications and mortality in patients with type I (insulin-dependent) and type 11 (non- insulin-dependent) diabetes. Cerebrovascular mortality rates have been shown to be raised in patients with type 11 diabetes but have not previously been reported by age and sex in patients with type I diabetes. Methods: A cohort of 23 751 patients with insulin-treated diabetes, diagnosed under the age of 30 years from throughout the United Kingdom, was identified during 1972 to 1993 and followed up for mortality until the end. of December 2000. Age- and sex-specific mortality rates and standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated. Results: There were 1437 deaths during the follow-up, 80 due to cerebrovascular disease. Overall, the cerebrovascular mortality rates in the cohort were higher than the corresponding rates in the general population, and the SMRs were 3.1 (95% Cl, 2.2 to 4.3) for men and 4.4 (95% Cl, 3.1 to 6.0) for women. When stratified by age, the SMRs were highest in the 20- to 39-year age group. After subdivision of cause of death into hemorrhagic and nonhemorrhagic origins, there remained a significant increase in mortality from stroke of nonhemorrhagic origin. Conclusions: Analyses of mortality from this cohort, essentially one of patients with type I diabetes, has shown for the first time that cerebrovascular mortality is raised at all ages in these patients. Type I diabetes is at least as great a risk factor for cerebrovascular mortality as type II diabetes
