Tailoring Creative Project Submission Guidelines for Blackboard
Your students have worked diligently to produce a project that showcases their creative talent. Immediately following their presentations, your office becomes a repository of student projects, threatening to cave in upon you at the slightest provocation. Creative projects can\u27t be graded digitally, or can they? This session offers tips and tricks to help insure the digital submissions you receive via Blackboard accurately represent students’ creative endeavors
'It's been a long hard fight for me': The Stolen Generations and Narratives of Poor Health in Australia 1883-2009
Health, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), can be defined as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ Using this definition of health, and others, as guiding principles, this thesis takes a thematic approach in order to demonstrate how nineteenth- and twentieth-century Australian government policies have influenced the health of Indigenous Australians today. The four key themes investigated are alienation, mental illness, alcohol abuse, and crime. By weaving the narratives taken from a number of published oral interviews, testimonies from Bringing Them Home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families and Telling Our Story: A Report by the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc) on the Removal of Aboriginal children from their families in Western Australia, and other edited collections, this thesis argues that from the perspective of numerous members of the Stolen Generations, the forcible removal of Aboriginal children and the subsequent feelings of alienation produced by removal, have had significant and on-going implications for the current state of poor health within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Gene Expression Analysis of Telomerase Related Genes in Myeloid Malignancy
Telomere shortening and an increased telomerase activity are associated with poor prognosis and disease progression in many cancers. In Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) telomere shortening has a strong correlation with disease progression. Expression of hTERT, the catalytic component of telomerase, was evaluated in the CD34+ cells of CML patients. This revealed that expression of hTERT was significantly reduced in chronic phase CML and decreased with disease progression to accelerated phase and blast crisis. It could therefore be concluded that reduced hTERT expression contributes to reduced telomere length in CML. Additionally, expression of c-Myc, which increases hTERT transcription, correlated with hTERT expression suggesting decreased hTERT is partly caused by reduced c-Myc. hTERT promoter methylation and mutation status were investigated and this revealed that the hTERT promoter was not methylated and mutation rates were low suggesting that these are not contributing to reduced hTERT expression. cDNA microarrays were used to analyse gene expression in neutrophils of patients with Essential Thrombocythaemia (ET) harbouring the JAK2 V617F mutation which, like the BCR/ABL translocation in CML, results in an activated kinase. Neutrophils of ET patients exhibited a gene expression profile close to that of controls despite the presence of the mutation. Affymetrix microarrays were used to investigate the role of telomerase related genes in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). Genes decreased in patients with del(5q) include positive regulators of telomere length and genes with higher expression were associated with increased telomerase activity. Inferring that in these patients telomere length would be reduced but counteracted by increased expression of genes promoting telomerase activity. Genes that could differentiate between RA and RAEB2 subtypes were mostly related to telomere maintenance. These results demonstrate the complex role of telomerase and telomere length in malignancy and challenge the view that hTERT is always increased in cancer

A Knowledge Management Approach: Business Intelligence in an Intranet Data Warehouse
For contemporary businesses to stay viable, businessintelligence is mission critical. Although the importance ofbusiness intelligence is recognised, there is limited research onwhat information contributes to business intelligence and howbusiness intelligence is sought for use in an organisationalintranet. This research discusses how business intelligence issought, captured and used having tapped into an intranet datawarehouse as a knowledge management approach. It adoptsqualitative case study method using interviews and observationtechniques. A case study was conducted to examine how anIntranet system was designed, how business intelligence wascaptured, and how it aided strategic planning and decisionmaking in business operation. The respondents explained howstructured business intelligence data was categorised anddisseminated to users and how the used information empoweredstaff in their work performance. The intranet design successfullyretains staff knowledge within the organisation. It was alsosuccessful in drawing all internal resources together, capturingresources from external sources, and forming a commonrepository of organisational assets for use through organisationalwork procedures within the intranet
FACS Interior Design I Class
Students from the FACS 200 Interior Design course worked together to design projects that physically moved while celebrating one or more tenants of Gestalt Theory. Projects were displayed in the Jerry Falwell Library, and students from the Bell Tower, Dominoes, Pop-up Book, Flower Bouquet, Waterfall, and Pinwheel groups gave presentations on their work on November 10th, 2020 in the library. Each project began with a mind map to generate ideas, followed by: the Programming Phase to discover materials and explore interpretations of Gestalt Theory, the Schematic and Design Development Phase to create plans for the proposed ideas, and finally the Contract Administration Phase to fabricate the design and put the project on display.https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/theoryinaction_projects2020/1006/thumbnail.jp
Inflorescence Architecture and Floral Morphology of Aratitiyopea lopezii (Xyridaceae)
Aratitiyopea lopezii is a robust perennial species of Xyridaceae from seasonally saturated, mid- to high-elevation, sandstone and granite sites in northern South America. The species lacks the scapose inflorescence characteristic of Xyridaceae and, having the gestalt of a rhizomatous bromeliad, it is seemingly aberrant in the family. However, closer examination confirms features consistent with the family and the previously noted morphological similarities to Orectanthe. Details of inflorescence structure and floral morphology are presented and compared to other genera of Xyridaceae
Overcoming Today’s Ethical Challenges for Librarians and Vendors (Lively Discussion)
Librarians and information professionals are often faced with situations that require judgment of ethical behavior regarding the library, patrons, and vendor relationships. Librarians encounter conflicts of interest, intellectual freedom issues, privacy concerns, and vendor and publisher relations dilemmas daily. Shrinking and flat budgets and rapidly advancing technology create further challenges to providing high-quality services while practicing ethical behavior. In this session, you will learn some of the ethical challenges that present themselves in librarianship and tactics that can be employed to overcome such challenges. In addition, you will learn how to work and build ethical relationships with vendors, how vendors are held to a high ethical standard, and different ways to evaluate and retain transparency in these relationships.
The session includes a brief presentation followed by breakout groups for a lively discussion on some of the ethical issues we encounter in libraries along with Q&A from the audience
