Medication Adherence Survey: A First Year Pharmacy Immersion Students’ Perspective
First year pharmacy Immersion students from University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy used a three question survey during their rotation at Moses H. Cone Hospital that analyzed patients’ medication adherence. Data collection revealed common trends that have been shown in the literature and areas for improvement. This method of evaluation was used by Phase I Immersion students to gain perspective on the problems we continue to have with medication adherence.

3D Structure of Microwave Sources from Solar Rotation Stereoscopy vs Magnetic Extrapolations
We use rotation stereoscopy to estimate the height of a steady-state solar
feature relative to the photosphere, based on its apparent motion in the image
plane recorded over several days of observation. The stereoscopy algorithm is
adapted to work with either one- or two-dimensional data (i.e. from images or
from observations that record the projected position of the source along an
arbitrary axis). The accuracy of the algorithm is tested on simulated data, and
then the algorithm is used to estimate the coronal radio source heights
associated with the active region NOAA 10956, based on multifrequency imaging
data over 7 days from the Siberian Solar Radio Telescope near 5.7 GHz, the
Nobeyama Radio Heliograph at 17 GHz, as well as one-dimensional scans at
multiple frequencies spanning the 5.98--15.95 GHz frequency range from the
RATAN-600 instrument. The gyroresonance emission mechanism, which is sensitive
to the coronal magnetic field strength, is applied to convert the estimated
radio source heights at various frequencies, h(f), to information about
magnetic field vs. height B(h), and the results are compared to a magnetic
field extrapolation derived from photospheric magnetic field observations
obtained by Hinode and MDI. We found that the gyroresonant emission comes from
the heights exceeding location of the third gyrolayer irrespectively on the
magnetic extrapolation method; implications of this finding for the coronal

Patient Medication Use: Interpreting the Results of a Patient Medication Safety Survey by Phase I Immersion Pharmacy Students
A medication safety survey was created during our first year pharmacy rotations in order to assess and gain insight to how safe patients are with their medications at home. The patient population was from the nursing units and emergency department of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. The survey questions covered the topics including how the patients take their medications, medication storage, medication disposal, as well as medication adherence.

Insights into the mechanism of membrane pyrophosphatases by combining experiment and computer simulation
Membrane-integral pyrophosphatases (mPPases) couple the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate (PPi) to the pumping of Na+, H+, or both these ions across a membrane. Recently solved structures of the Na+-pumping Thermotoga maritima mPPase (TmPPase) and H+-pumping Vigna radiata mPPase revealed the basis of ion selectivity between these enzymes and provided evidence for the mechanisms of substrate hydrolysis and ion-pumping. Our atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of TmPPase demonstrate that loop 5-6 is mobile in the absence of the substrate or substrate-analogue bound to the active site, explaining the lack of electron density for this loop in resting state structures. Furthermore, creating an apo model of TmPPase by removing ligands from the TmPPase: IDP: Na structure in MD simulations resulted in increased dynamics in loop 5-6, which results in this loop moving to uncover the active site, suggesting that interactions between loop 5-6 and the imidodiphosphate and its associated Mg2+ are important for holding a loop-closed conformation. We also provide further evidence for the transport-before-hydrolysis mechanism by showing that the non-hydrolyzable substrate analogue, methylene diphosphonate, induces low levels of proton pumping by VrPPase. The RCSB Protein Data Bank: a redesigned query system and relational database based on the mmCIF schema
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is the central worldwide repository for three-dimensional (3D) structure data of biological macromolecules. The Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics (RCSB) has completely redesigned its resource for the distribution and query of 3D structure data. The re-engineered site is currently in public beta test at http://pdbbeta.rcsb.org. The new site expands the functionality of the existing site by providing structure data in greater detail and uniformity, improved query and enhanced analysis tools. A new key feature is the integration and searchability of data from over 20 other sources covering genomic, proteomic and disease relationships. The current capabilities of the re-engineered site, which will become the RCSB production site at http://www.pdb.org in late 2005, are described
