Electromagnetism and multiple-valued loop-dependent wave functionals

We quantize the Maxwell theory in the presence of a electric charge in a "dual" Loop Representation, i.e. a geometric representation of magnetic Faraday's lines. It is found that the theory can be seen as a theory without sources, except by the fact that the wave functional becomes multivalued. This can be seen as the dual counterpart of what occurs in Maxwell theory with a magnetic pole, when it is quantized in the ordinary Loop Representation. The multivaluedness can be seen as a result of the multiply-connectedness of the configuration space of the quantum theory.Comment: 5 page

Desorption Dynamics of Heavy Alkali Metal Atoms (Rb, Cs) off the Surface of Helium Nanodroplets

We present a combined ion imaging and density functional theory study of the dynamics of the desorption process of rubidium and cesium atoms off the surface of helium nanodroplets upon excitation of the perturbed $6s$ and $7s$ states, respectively. Both experimental and theoretical results are well represented by the pseudodiatomic model for effective masses of the helium droplet in the desorption reaction of m_eff/m_He~10 (Rb) and 13 (Cs). Deviations from this model are found for Rb excited to the 6p state. Photoelectron spectra indicate that the dopant-droplet interaction induces relaxation into low-lying electronic states of the desorbed atoms in the course of the ejection process.Comment: in press, J. Development of a high-performance W-band duplexer for plasma diagnosis using a single band with dual circular polarization

It uses a single frequency band, with two signals discriminated by different orthogonal circular polarization, which is generated by means of a septum orthomode transducer (OMT) polarizer. Moreover, this component is optimized loaded with the horn antenna for improving the overall system performance. It is explained how these two components are integrated into a very compact duplexer, designed using efficient numerical algorithms. The manufacturing process by mean of high precision milling, and including electrical discharge machining (EDM) has led to excellent performances. The measured return loss level and isolation are higher than 30 dB, and the insertion loss level is below 0.3 dB. Ferida da moda: epidemiologia, diagnóstico, tratamento e experiência com eqüinos infectados no Pantanal.

A pitiose é uma doença granulomatosa que atinge eqüinos, caninos, bovinos, felinos e humanos e ocorre em áreas tropicais, subtropicais ou temperadas (Meireles et al., 1993; Mendoza et al., 1996), causada pelo omiceto Pythium insidiosum (De Cock et al., 1987). A espécie eqüina é a mais atingida, principalmente nas formas cutânea e subcutânea, seguida dos caninos (Mendoza et al., 1996). A enfermidade em eqüinos caracteriza-se pela formação de granulomas eosinofílicos, com a presença de massas necróticas chamadas de kunkers (Mendoza e Alfaro, 1986; Meireles et al., 1993). Em humanos, a doença é mais comum no sudeste asiático, caracterizando-se por formas sistêmicas com arterites e também formas oftálmicas e subcutâneas, sendo as duas últimas associadas a a e b-talassemias (Imwidthaya, 1994; Imwidthaya, 1995). Vários tratamentos têm sido utilizados, principalmente em eqüinos, incluindo tratamento químico (antifúngicos), cirúrgico e imunoterápico. A imunoterapia, proposta inicialmente por Miller (1981), surgiu como uma alternativa concreta para o controle da doença e tem apresentado resultados promissores (Monteiro, 1999). Magnetic fields around evolved stars: further observations of H2_2O maser polarization

We aim to detect the magnetic field and infer its properties around four AGB stars using H$_2$O maser observations. The sample we observed consists of the following sources: the semi-regular variable RT Vir and the Mira variables AP Lyn, IK Tau, and IRC+60370. We observed the 6$_{1,6}-5_{2,3}$ H$_2$O maser rotational transition, in full-polarization mode, to determine its linear and circular polarization. Based on the Zeeman effect, one can infer the properties of the magnetic field from the maser polarization analysis. We detected a total of 238 maser features, in three of the four observed sources. No masers were found toward AP Lyn. The observed masers are all located between 2.4 and 53.0 AU from the stars. Linear and circular polarization was found in 18 and 11 maser features, respectively. We more than doubled the number of AGB stars in which magnetic field has been detected from H$_2$O maser polarization, as our results confirm the presence of fields around IK Tau, RT Vir and IRC+60370. The strength of the field along the line of sight is found to be between 47 and 331 mG in the H$_2$O maser region. Extrapolating this result to the surface of the stars, assuming a toroidal field ($\propto$ r$^{-1}$), we find magnetic fields of 0.3-6.9 G on the stellar surfaces. If, instead of a toroidal field, we assume a poloidal field ($\propto$ r$^{-2}$), then the extrapolated magnetic field strength on the stellar surfaces are in the range between 2.2 and $\sim$115 G. Finally, if a dipole field ($\propto$ r$^{-3}$) is assumed, the field strength on the surface of the star is found to be between 15.8 and $\sim$1945 G. The magnetic energy of our sources is higher than the thermal and kinetic energy in the H$_2$O maser region of this class of objects. This leads us to conclude that, indeed, magnetic fields probably play an important role in shaping the outflows of evolved stars. (abridged)Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables. Feno de pastagem nativa da "Zona de mimoso", como opcao para suplementacao do rebanho, na epoca seca.

Entre os diversos tipos de vegetacao do Piaui, a pastagem nativa da "zona de mimoso" e considerada uma das mais importantes do Estado. O maior problema enfrentado pelo pecuarista da regiao e a falta de forragempara o rebanho, na seca, ja que a pastagem cultivada e insignificante.Neste periodo a pastagem nativa seca totalmente e parte dela e carregada pelos ventos, tornando-se escassa a disponibilidade de forragem. Noperiodo chuvoso, a pastagem nativa chega a ser abundante e, as vezes excedendo o consumo animal. A producao de feno do excedente da pastagemnativa e uma opcao para suplementacao do gado na epoca critica. A UEPAE de Teresina produziu na "zona de mimoso" cerca de 9,0 t de feno parasuplementacao de seu rebanho. O trabalho foi realizado em marco de 1982, quando havia excedentes de forragem. Foram usados dois sistemas: 1)Todas as operacoes (roco, enleiramento e enfaradmento) forma executados manualmente. 2)Foi realizado roco mecanico, e enleiramento manual. Em ambos o enfardamento foi manual em prensa de feno. A maior producao de feno no sistema totalmente manual foi devido a altura de corte das plantas ter sido mais baixa. O feno produzido em Campo Maior tinha 7,85% de proteina bruta e 0,08% de fosforo, com base na materia seca. Este dados mostram que o teor de proteina e superior as necessidades de mantenca dos bovinos, que e de 7,0%. Competição de cultivares de arroz de sequeiro em diferentes épocas de plantio em Rondônia.

Procura identificar plantios em diferentes epocas, cultivares mais produtivas e melhor adaptaveis. Os experimentos foram conduzidos nas bases fisicas de Porto Velho e Ouro Preto-RO. Utilizou-se delineamento de bloco casualisado, com tres repeticoes. Foram utizadas dez cultivares: IAC-25, IAC-47, IAC-5100, IAC-5544, Chatao, Bico Ganga, IAC-1131, IAC-1246, Pratao precoce e A-19, provenientes da EMBRAPA-CNPAF. Fez-se necessario substituir a cultivar Agulhinha, EEA-409, Dawn, IR-665,14.3.5, P-723-6.3.1 e Cica-4 usadas no ano anterior, pelas seis primeiras das acima citadas, decorrentes do comportamento insatisfatorio para as condicoes locais. Constatou-se a presenca de brusone (Pyricularia orizae Cav.), com baixa incidencia, nas cuiltivares de IAC-25, IAC-5100,IAC-5544, Bico ganga, Pratao precoce e A-19. Concluiu-se que em Ouro Preto as cultivares que se destacaram foram IAC-47, Bico ganga, IAC-1246 e a cultivar que menos acamou foi IAC-47. Observou-se que a partir da segunda quinzena de out., o acamamento diminui, havendo porem uma inluencia negativa na producao.bitstream/item/58759/1/COT-1130-0001.pd
