Entropy bounds in terms of the w parameter
In a pair of recent articles [PRL 105 (2010) 041302 - arXiv:1005.1132; JHEP
1103 (2011) 056 - arXiv:1012.2867] two of the current authors have developed an
entropy bound for equilibrium uncollapsed matter using only classical general
relativity, basic thermodynamics, and the Unruh effect. An odd feature of that
bound, S <= A/2, was that the proportionality constant, 1/2, was weaker than
that expected from black hole thermodynamics, 1/4. In the current article we
strengthen the previous results by obtaining a bound involving the (suitably
averaged) w parameter. Simple causality arguments restrict this averaged
parameter to be <= 1. When equality holds, the entropy bound saturates at the
value expected based on black hole thermodynamics. We also add some clarifying
comments regarding the (net) positivity of the chemical potential. Overall, we
find that even in the absence of any black hole region, we can nevertheless get

A Variational Method in Out of Equilibrium Physical Systems
A variational principle is further developed for out of equilibrium dynamical
systems by using the concept of maximum entropy. With this new formulation it
is obtained a set of two first-order differential equations, revealing the same
formal symplectic structure shared by classical mechanics, fluid mechanics and
thermodynamics. In particular, it is obtained an extended equation of motion
for a rotating dynamical system, from where it emerges a kind of topological
torsion current of the form , with and
denoting components of the vector potential (gravitational or/and
electromagnetic) and is the angular velocity of the accelerated frame.
In addition, it is derived a special form of Umov-Poynting's theorem for
rotating gravito-electromagnetic systems, and obtained a general condition of
equilibrium for a rotating plasma. The variational method is then applied to
clarify the working mechanism of some particular devices, such as the Bennett
pinch and vacuum arcs, to calculate the power extraction from an hurricane, and
to discuss the effect of transport angular momentum on the radiactive heating
of planetary atmospheres. This development is seen to be advantageous and opens

Hiperplasia suprarrenal no clásica, características de laboratorio y respuesta al tratamiento. Estudio de cohorte
Objetivo: comparar las características de laboratorio y la respuesta al tratamiento en una cohorte de pacientes con hiperplasia suprarrenal congénita no clásica seguidas durante 12 meses.
Métodos: se realizó un estudio en una cohorte final de 38 pacientes con hiperplasia suprarrenal no clásica evaluadas entre enero de 2006 hasta diciembre de 2016 y que tuvieron seguimiento a 1 año. Las características de la población de estudio y la respuesta de 17-hidroxiprogesterona (17-OH progesterona), testosterona y dehidroepiandrosterona sulfato (DHEA-S) se informan a los 6 y 12 meses después del tratamiento con dexametasona y etinilestradiol/acetato de ciproterona. Se realizó una regresión lineal múltiple para explicar el cambio de las variables de resultado (17- OH progesterona, testosterona y DHEA-S), ajustado de acuerdo con el índice de masa corporal (IMC) y la edad como covariables.
Resultados: la edad promedio de los participantes fue de 25 años, el IMC promedio fue de 28,3 kg/m2. Las características clínicas más prevalentes fueron el acné (52,6 %) y la oligomenorrea (55 %). El hirsutismo se presentó en todos los casos en algún grado (moderado: 31,6 % y grave: 39,5 %, según la escala de Ferriman y Gallwey). El cambio en los niveles de cada una de las hormonas evidenció una disminución significativa de la mediana del rango intercuartílico de 17-OH progesterona, testosterona y DHEA-S, a los 6 y 12 meses (p < 0,05). En la regresión lineal múltiple, los niveles de testosterona presentaron una variación de acuerdo con el IMC (p = 0,04). En el presente estudio, la terapia farmacológica con dexametasona se aplicó a diferentes dosis y todas las pacientes recibieron anticonceptivos con una respuesta clínica y paraclínica adecuada al año de seguimiento.
Conclusión: este estudio sugiere que la combinación de etinilestradiol más acetato de ciproterona con dosis variables de dexametasona disminuye el perfil androgénico en las pacientes con hiperplasia suprarrenal no clásica seguidas durante un año
Effects of pollution on adolescent mental health: a systematic review protocol.
BACKGROUND: Whilst there is little uncertainty about the deleterious impact of pollution on human and planetary health, pollution's impact on adolescent mental health is less well understood. This is particularly true for young people in underdeveloped and developing world contexts, about whom research is generally lacking. Furthermore, although adolescent resilience continues to be a research priority, little attention has been paid to adolescent pathways of resilience in the face or aftermath of pollution exposure. The objective of this study will be to examine the associations between pollution and mental health in 10- to 24-year-olds (i.e. adolescents). METHODS: We designed and registered a study protocol for a systematic review of studies which link pollution and mental health in adolescents. We will include observational studies (e.g. cohort, case-control, time series analyses) that assess the associations between exposure to any form of pollution and the mental health of 10- to 24-year-olds. The primary outcome will be symptoms associated with neurodevelopmental disorders; disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders; depressive disorders; anxiety disorders; substance disorders; and schizophrenia. No secondary outcomes will be considered. Literature searches will be conducted in multiple electronic databases (from inception onwards), including PubMed, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SciELO, ERIC, and Africa-Wide. Two investigators will independently screen all citations, full-text articles, and abstract data. The methodological quality (or bias) of included studies will be appraised using appropriate tools. We will provide a narrative synthesis of the evidence. DISCUSSION: This systematic review will evaluate the evidence on the associations between pollution and the mental health of 10- to 24-year-olds. Our findings will be of potential interest to multiple audiences (including adolescent patients/clients, their families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, scientists, and policy makers) and could be used to develop prevention and intervention strategies as well as focus future research. Genomic Expansion of Magnetotactic Bacteria Reveals an Early Common Origin of Magnetotaxis with Lineage-specific Evolution
The origin and evolution of magnetoreception, which in diverse prokaryotes and protozoa is known as magnetotaxis and enables these microorganisms to detect Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and navigation, is not well understood in evolutionary biology. The only known prokaryotes capable of sensing the geomagnetic field are magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), motile microorganisms that biomineralize intracellular, membrane-bounded magnetic single-domain crystals of either magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4) called magnetosomes. Magnetosomes are responsible for magnetotaxis in MTB. Here we report the first large-scale metagenomic survey of MTB from both northern and southern hemispheres combined with 28 genomes from uncultivated MTB. These genomes expand greatly the coverage of MTB in the Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, and Omnitrophica phyla, and provide the first genomic evidence of MTB belonging to the Zetaproteobacteria and “Candidatus Lambdaproteobacteria” classes. The gene content and organization of magnetosome gene clusters, which are physically grouped genes that encode proteins for magnetosome biosynthesis and organization, are more conserved within phylogenetically similar groups than between different taxonomic lineages. Moreover, the phylogenies of core magnetosome proteins form monophyletic clades. Together, these results suggest a common ancient origin of iron-based (Fe3O4 and Fe3S4) magnetotaxis in the domain Bacteria that underwent lineage-specific evolution, shedding new light on the origin and evolution of biomineralization and magnetotaxis, and expanding significantly the phylogenomic representation of MTB
Effects of ACEi and ARB on post-exercise hypotension induced by exercises conducted at different times of day in hypertensive men
Background: Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) is greater after evening than morning exercise, but antihypertensive drugs may affect the evening potentiation of PEH. Objective: To compare morning and evening PEH in hypertensives receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB). Methods: Hypertensive men receiving ACEi (n = 14) or ARB (n = 15) underwent, in a random order, two maximal exercise tests (cycle ergometer, 15 watts/min until exhaustion) with one conducted in the morning (7 and 9 a.m.) and the other in the evening (8 and 10 p.m.). Auscultatory blood pressure (BP) was assessed in triplicate before and 30 min after the exercises. Changes in BP (post-exercise–pre-exercise) were compared between the groups and the sessions using a two-way mixed ANOVA and considering P < .05 as significant. Results: In the ARB group, systolic BP decrease was greater after the evening than the morning exercise, while in the ACEi group, it was not different after the exercises conducted at the different times of the day. Additionally, after the evening exercise, systolic BP decrease was lower in the ACEi than the ARB group (ARB = −11 ± 8 vs −6 ± 6 and ACEi = −6 ± 7 vs. −8 ± 5 mmHg, evening vs. morning, respectively, P for interaction = 0.014). Conclusions: ACEi, but not ARB use, blunts the greater PEH that occurs after exercise conducted in the evening than in the morning
Poor sleep quality is associated with cardiac autonomic dysfunction in treated hypertensive men
Hypertensives present cardiac autonomic dysfunction. Reduction in sleep quality increases blood pressure (BP) and favors hypertension development. Previous studies suggested a relationship between cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction and sleep quality, but it is unclear whether this association is present in hypertensives. Thus, this study evaluated the relationship between sleep quality and cardiac autonomic modulation in hypertensives. Forty-seven middle-aged hypertensive men under consistent anti-hypertensive treatment were assessed for sleep quality by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI—higher score means worse sleep quality). Additionally, their beat-by-beat BP and heart rate (HR) were recorded, and cardiac autonomic modulation was assessed by their variabilities. Mann-Whitney and t tests were used to compare different sleep quality groups: poor (PSQI > 5, n = 24) vs good (PSQI ≤ 5, n = 23), and Spearman’s correlations to investigate associations between sleep quality and autonomic markers. Patients with poor sleep quality presented lower cardiac parasympathetic modulation (HR high-frequency band = 26 ± 13 vs 36 ± 15 nu, P =.03; HR total variance = 951 ± 1373 vs 1608 ± 2272 ms2, P =.05) and cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (4.5 ± 2.3 vs 7.1 ± 3.7 ms/mm Hg, P =.01). Additionally, sleep quality score presented significant positive correlation with HR (r = +0.34, P =.02) and negative correlations with HR high-frequency band (r = −0.34, P =.03), HR total variance (r = −0.35, P =.02), and cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (r = −0.42, P =.01), showing that poor sleep quality is associated with higher HR and lower cardiac parasympathetic modulation and baroreflex sensitivity. In conclusion, in treated hypertensive men, poor sleep quality is associated with cardiac autonomic dysfunction
