Efficacy of topical imiquimod 3.75% in the treatment of actinic keratosis of the scalp in immunosuppressed patients: our case series
AbstractBackground: Actinic keratoses (AK) represent common cutaneous lesions, appearing in 'Field cancerization areas' and potentially evolving toward invasive neoplasm. Immunosuppressed patients ..
approach to a water safety plan for recreational waters disinfection of a drainage pumping station as an unconventional point source of fecal contamination
Abstract
In the context of the management of bathing water quality, the intermittent contamination of rainwater drainage pumps (unconventional point sources) could be controlled by peracetic acid disinfection. Thus, a field experimental study was carried out to set up a water safety plan, determining the monitoring parameters and the critical limit for corrective actions. With a 0.5 mg/l dosage, the average logarithmic microbial reduction was 0.50 ± 0.48 for Escherichia coli (EC) and 0.43 ± 0.54 for intestinal enterococci. Among the chemical and physical parameters that could be monitored in real time, the oxidationâreduction potential was the only one able to predict the microbial concentration discharged from a drainage pump and the logarithmic abatement of EC. Considering the possible impact of this source on bathing waters in terms of additional risk of gastrointestinal infections, the critical limit for continuous monitoring was established using a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model
Normal families of functions and groups of pseudoconformal diffeomorphisms of quaternion and octonion variables
This paper is devoted to the specific class of pseudoconformal mappings of
quaternion and octonion variables. Normal families of functions are defined and
investigated. Four criteria of a family being normal are proven. Then groups of
pseudoconformal diffeomorphisms of quaternion and octonion manifolds are
investigated. It is proven, that they are finite dimensional Lie groups for
compact manifolds. Their examples are given. Many charactersitic features are
found in comparison with commutative geometry over or .Comment: 55 pages, 53 reference
New national and regional Annex I Habitat records: from #26 to #36
New Italian data on the distribution of the Annex I Habitats 1510*, 2130*, 2250*, 3180*, 3260, 5230*, 6410, 7140, 7220*, 9320 are reported in this contribution. Specifically, 14 new occurrences in Natura 2000 sites are presented and 20 new cells are added in the EEA 10 km Ă 10 km reference grid. The new data refer to the Italian administrative regions of Abruzzo, Apulia, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Marche, Molise, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria
Antineoplastic activity of idazoxan hydrochloride
Idazoxan hydrochloride (IDA) is a 241 molecular weight imidazoline and adrenoreceptor ligand. It binds to mitochondrial membranes and promotes apoptosis of pancreatic beta cells. Since IDA has not been tested against tumor cells, the purpose of our study was to determine if IDA has antineoplastic activity.
We used the conversion of a soluble tetrazolium salt to an insoluble formazan precipitate and differential staining cytotoxicity assays to determine if IDA was cytotoxic to cell lines of murine lung cancer and human prostate cancer, as well as to a variety of fresh human tumor samples. We used flow cytometry to analyze cell death and calreticulin expression.
IDA is cytotoxic to both cell lines and against aliquots of specimens of breast, gastric, lung, ovarian and prostate cancers as well as non-Hodgkinâs lymphoma. It produces apoptotic cell death and promotes calreticulin expression, suggesting that IDA might be immunomodulatory in vivo.
We anticipate that IDA will be clinically useful in cancer treatment
