Amazonian chemical weathering rate derived from stony meteorite finds at Meridiani Planum on Mars
© The Author(s) 2016.Spacecraft exploring Mars such as the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, as well as the Mars Science Laboratory or Curiosity rover, have accumulated evidence for wet and habitable conditions on early Mars more than 3 billion years ago. Current conditions, by contrast, are cold, extremely arid and seemingly inhospitable. To evaluate exactly how dry today's environment is, it is important to understand the ongoing current weathering processes. Here we present chemical weathering rates determined for Mars. We use the oxidation of iron in stony meteorites investigated by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity at Meridiani Planum. Their maximum exposure age is constrained by the formation of Victoria crater and their minimum age by erosion of the meteorites. The chemical weathering rates thus derived are ~1 to 4 orders of magnitude slower than that of similar meteorites found in Antarctica where the slowest rates are observed on Earth
Risk-shifting Through Issuer Liability and Corporate Monitoring
This article explores how issuer liability re-allocates fraud risk and how risk allocation may reduce the incidence of fraud. In the US, the apparent absence of individual liability of officeholders and insufficient monitoring by insurers under-mine the potential deterrent effect of securities litigation. The underlying reasons why both mechanisms remain ineffective are collective action problems under the prevailing dispersed ownership structure, which eliminates the incentives to moni-tor set by issuer liability. This article suggests that issuer liability could potentially have a stronger deterrent effect when it shifts risk to individuals or entities holding a larger financial stake. Thus, it would enlist large shareholders in monitoring in much of Europe. The same risk-shifting effect also has implications for the debate about the relationship between securities litigation and creditor interests. Credi-tors’ claims should not be given precedence over claims of defrauded investors (e.g., because of the capital maintenance principle), since bearing some of the fraud risk will more strongly incentivise large creditors, such as banks, to monitor the firm in jurisdictions where corporate debt is relatively concentrated
Association of metabolic equivalent of task (MET) score in length of stay in hospital following radical cystectomy with urinary diversion:a multi-institutional study
PURPOSE: The Metabolic equivalent of task (MET) score is used in patients’ preoperative functional capacity assessment. It is commonly thought that patients with a higher MET score will have better postoperative outcomes than patients with a lower MET score. However, such a link remains the subject of debate and is yet unvalidated in major urological surgery. This study aimed to explore the association of patients’ MET score with their postoperative outcomes following radical cystectomy. METHODS: We used records-linkage methodology with unique identifiers (Community Health Index/hospital number) and electronic databases to assess postoperative outcomes of patients who had underwent radical cystectomies between 2015 and 2020. The outcome measure was patients’ length of hospital stay. This was compared with multiple basic characteristics such as age, sex, MET score and comorbid conditions. A MET score of less than four (< 4) is taken as the threshold for a poor functional capacity. We conducted unadjusted and adjusted Cox regression analyses for time to discharge against MET score. RESULTS: A total of 126 patients were included in the analysis. Mean age on date of operation was 66.2 (SD 12.2) years and 49 (38.9%) were female. A lower MET score was associated with a statistically significant lower time-dependent risk of hospital discharge (i.e. longer hospital stay) when adjusted for covariates (HR 0.224; 95% CI 0.077–0.652; p = 0.006). Older age (adjusted HR 0.531; 95% CI 0.332–0.848; p = 0.008) and postoperative complications (adjusted HR 0.503; 95% CI 0.323–0.848; p = 0.002) were also found to be associated with longer hospital stay. Other comorbid conditions, BMI, disease staging and 30-day all-cause mortality were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION: A lower MET score in this cohort of patients was associated with a longer hospital stay length following radical cystectomy with urinary diversion. Measurement of W Polarisation at LEP
The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e+
e- -> W+ W- -> l nu q q~ at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W
decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 183-209 GeV are used to
measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson
production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured
to be 0.218 \pm 0.027 \pm 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and
the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation

Resumo: Pretende-se fazer a abordagem de um conjunto conventual que passou por vicissitudes várias desde a sua desocupação pelos frades carmelitas, exigida pela extinção das ordens religiosas e a sua reutilização atual que contribui para que este património continue vivo e em condições de ser transmitido às gerações vindouras, nas melhores condições.
O Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, foi casa religiosa fundada por iniciativa do bispo de Évora D. Teotónio de Bragança datando a sagração da igreja conventual do ano de 1614.
Integrando a reformada Ordem dos Carmelitas possuía regra austera que obrigava a pobreza e despojamento rigorosos. O carisma contemplativo e apostólico das comunidades dos Carmelitas Descalços inspiravam-se na acção de Jesus “ora orando isolado no deserto, ora em piedosa intervenção quando no meio da multidão”.
Situando-se o convento no exterior da muralha medieva, em área anexa às Portas de Alconchel, à época principal ligação da cidade com o exterior, era local privilegiado de circulação de pessoas e bens.
Possui a igreja orientação sudeste/noroeste desenvolvendo-se o claustro para sudoeste, rodeando-se este com os compartimentos necessários à vida da comunidade religiosa: a sudeste, a ala onde se situava a sala do Capítulo, refeitório e escada “regular” de acesso ao dormitório do piso superior, subdividido em celas; a sudoeste dependências de serviço, nomeadamente o refeitório e cozinha; a noroeste, localiza-se a igreja assim como o pequeno compartimento para os livros de orações e a noroeste, na ala dos “mossos”, localiza-se ainda hoje a primitiva portaria. Possivelmente existiriam aí outros compartimentos como sala de aula, hospedaria, enfermaria, refeitório para os “noviços”, dependências para armazenamento de víveres e um acesso entre os dois pisos a ligar ao dormitório. No tardoz do altar-mor da igreja, no prolongamento da ala claustral, existe ainda hoje a sacristia assim como capela mortuária de um dos benfeitores da casa.
A cerca conventual envolvia o conjunto edificado pelos lados sudoeste e sueste situando-se as ligações com o espaço público a noroeste.
Passados cerca de 200 anos sobre a sua saída dos frades carmelitas, a igreja é utilizada atualmente para a realização de recitais e aulas de música clássica e canto, a capela funerária é ocupada por gabinete, a sacristia é local de aulas de música, a sala do capítulo foi transformada em espaço para crianças mantendo o “refeitório dos frades” a anterior função. As alas sudoeste e dos “mossos” estão totalmente reestruturadas sendo hoje ampla galeria de exposições. O andar superior ocupado pelas celas foi totalmente remodelado aí existindo amplos espaços destinados a exposições e actividades complementares.
A cerca, cedida pela Fazenda Pública à Câmara Municipal de Évora em 1839, foi no ano seguinte reutilizada como cemitério. Os serviços necessários à sua manutenção encontram-se igualmente instalados no atual conjunto edificado

Alteration of cell-wall porosity is involved in osmotic stress-induced enhancement of aluminium resistance in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)
Aluminium (Al) toxicity and drought are the two major abiotic stress factors limiting common bean production in the tropics. Using hydroponics, the short-term effects of combined Al toxicity and drought stress on root growth and Al uptake into the root apex were investigated. In the presence of Al stress, PEG 6000 (polyethylene glycol)-induced osmotic (drought) stress led to the amelioration of Al-induced inhibition of root elongation in the Al-sensitive genotype VAX 1. PEG 6000 (>> PEG 1000) treatment greatly decreased Al accumulation in the 1 cm root apices even when the roots were physically separated from the PEG solution using dialysis membrane tubes. Upon removal of PEG from the treatment solution, the root tips recovered from osmotic stress and the Al accumulation capacity was quickly restored. The PEG-induced reduction of Al accumulation was not due to a lower phytotoxic Al concentration in the treatment solution, reduced negativity of the root apoplast, or to enhanced citrate exudation. Also cell-wall (CW) material isolated from PEG-treated roots showed a low Al-binding capacity which, however, was restored after destroying the physical structure of the CW. The comparison of the Al3+, La3+, Sr2+, and Rb+ binding capacity of the intact root tips and the isolated CW revealed the specificity of the PEG 6000 effect for Al. This could be due to the higher hydrated ionic radius of Al3+ compared with other cations (Al3+ >> La3+ > Sr2+ > Rb+). In conclusion, the results provide circumstantial evidence that the osmotic stress-inhibited Al accumulation in root apices and thus reduced Al-induced inhibition of root elongation in the Al-sensitive genotype VAX 1 is related to the alteration of CW porosity resulting from PEG 6000-induced dehydration of the root apoplast
The economic benefits of invasive species management
Invasive species are known to cause significant negative impacts to ecosystems and to people.
In this paper, we outline the nature of these economic impacts, and then present a range of approaches for estimating the economic costs of invasive species (including impacts on biodiversity), and thus the benefits of management programmes. The importance of thinking clearly about the most appropriate context for valuation is stressed.
We provide examples of the application of non‐market valuation approaches to invasive species management, and show how such methods can be used to measure public preferences over how control is undertaken.
We discuss some important problems in applying economic valuation methods in this context
Antimicrobial Activity and Genetic Profile of Enteroccoci Isolated from Hoopoes Uropygial Gland
Symbiotic microorganisms may be directly transferred from parents to offspring or acquired from a particular environment that animals may be able to select. If benefits for hosts vary among microbial strains, natural selection may favour hosts holding the most beneficial one. Enterococci symbionts living in the hoopoe (Upupa epops) uropygial gland are able to synthesise bacteriocins (antimicrobial peptides that inhibit the growth of competitor bacteria). We explored variability in genetic profile (through RAPD-PCR analyses) and antimicrobial properties (by performing antagonistic tests against ten bacterial indicator strains) of the different isolates obtained from the uropygial glands of hoopoe females and nestlings. We found that the genetic profile of bacterial isolates was related to antimicrobial activity, as well as to individual host identity and the nest from which samples were obtained.
