The role of p38 MAPK and its substrates in neuronal plasticity and neurodegenerative disease
A significant amount of evidence suggests that the p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling cascade plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity and in neurodegenerative diseases. In this review we will discuss the cellular localisation and activation of p38 MAPK and the recent advances on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of its substrates: MAPKAPK 2 (MK2) and tau protein. In particular we will focus our attention on the understanding of the p38 MAPK-MK2 and p38 MAPK-tau activation axis in controlling neuroinflammation, actin remodelling and tau hyperphosphorylation, processes that are thought to be involved in normal ageing as well as in neurodegenerative diseases. We will also give some insight into how elucidating the precise role of p38 MAPK-MK2 and p38 MAPK-tau signalling cascades may help to identify novel therapeutic targets to slow down the symptoms observed in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease
Biopolymers applied to packaging: A brief literature review on their impact on sustainability
The replacement of fossil raw materials by renewable alternatives is imperative. Renewable, biodegradable, and compostable polymers are options to be developed and adopted. Embedded in this concept, the present study evaluates whether biopolymers are sustainable alternatives to replace traditional polymers used in packaging, such as polyethylene. To that end, a systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out on biopolymers applied to packaging, with an analysis of its impacts. Three sustainability criteria were adopted: a) Criteria for Developing Sustainable Packaging; b) Goals of Sustainable Development; and c) Circular Economy Criteria. The Methodology Section presents the state of the art of potential polymers for packaging and their characteristics vis-à-vis the evaluation criteria adopted based on the SLR. Through data collection, it was observed that advanced obtaining techniques enable polymers economically and that, environmentally speaking, there is a positive consensus about some types of those materials. However, technological maturity and productive scale capacity are necessary to reduce costs in a competitive scenario with conventional polymers
Quantum Interference of Force
We show that a quantum particle subjected to a positive force in one path of
a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a null force in the other path may receive a
negative average momentum transfer when it leaves the interferometer by a
particular exit. In this scenario, an ensemble of particles may receive an
average momentum in the opposite direction of the applied force due to quantum
interference, a behavior with no classical analogue. We discuss some
experimental schemes that could verify the effect with current technology, with
electrons or neutrons in Mach-Zehnder interferometers in free space and with
atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 5 figures. Accepted in Quantum on 2018-12-0
