A Study of the Relationship Between Loneliness and Internet Use Among University Students
Problem . Research investigating the relationship between loneliness and various dimensions of Internet use is mixed. While some studies support the connection, other studies refute the link. More analysis in this area is needed to help clinicians, parents, college students, school counselors, and educators better understand the effects of the Internet on college-age students. This study attempts to expand understanding of the conflictual relationship that exists between loneliness and the dynamics of Internet use in undergraduate students.
Method . Four-hundred sixty-six randomly selected Andrews University undergraduate students who lived in residence halls, university apartments, and the community completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) and the Internet Use Survey, a questionnaire developed by the researcher. Demographic information was also collected. Analysis of variance, multiple regression, and correlational analyses were performed to test the hypotheses of the study.
Results . Overall, results indicate the Internet does not seem to be influencing the loneliness levels in undergraduate students. Specifically, the amount of Internet use, type of Internet use, history of Internet use, reasons for using the Internet, preference for the Internet as a mode of communication, preference for type of Internet activity, and the changes in face-to-face interaction, talking on the phone, and overall communicating with family, friends, and others (besides family and friends) since using the Internet have a minimal effect on the loneliness experienced in undergraduate students.
Conclusions . In this study, Internet use does not contribute to loneliness among undergraduates using the Internet less than 40 hours per week. For most, use of the Internet is both highly enjoyable and useful.Loneliness is more prevalent in the few who use the Internet more than 40 hours per week and in those who prefer the Internet over face-to-face interaction or talking on the phone. Results showed an inverse relationship between loneliness and the number of years a student had used the Internet. Newer users are at a slightly higher risk of experiencing loneliness than those with a longer history of Internet use. The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network: Results of the naturalistic follow-up study after 2.5 years of follow-up in the German centres
The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (SFBN) is an international, multisite network investigating the characteristics and course of bipolar disorder. Methods (history, ratings and longitudinal follow-up) are standardized and equally applied in all 7 centres. This article describes demographics and illness characteristics of the first 152 German patients enrolled in them SFBN as well as the results of 2.5 years of follow-up. Patients in Germany were usually enrolled after hospitalisation. More than 72% of the study population suffered from bipolar I disorder and 25% from bipolar 11 disorder. The mean +/- SD age of the study participants was 42.08 +/- 13.5 years, and the mean SD age of onset 24.44 +/- 10.9 years. More than 40% of the sample reported a rapid-cycling course in history, and even more a cycle acceleration overtime. 37% attempted suicide at least once. 36% had an additional Axis I disorder, with alcohol abuse being the most common one, followed by anxiety disorders. During the follow-up period, only 27% remained stable, 56% had a recurrence, 12.8% perceived subsyndromal symptoms despite treatment and regular visits. 27% suffered from a rapid-cycling course during the follow-up period. Recurrences were significantly associated with bipolar I disorder, an additional comorbid Axis I disorder, rapid cycling in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and the long-term use of typical antipsychotics. Rapid cycling during follow-up was only associated with a rapidcycling course in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and at least one suicide attempt in history. Copyright (c) 2003 S. Antigens in human glioblastomas and meningiomas: Search for tumour and onco-foetal antigens. Estimation of S-100 and GFA protein.
Extracts of glioblastomas and meningiomas were analysed by quantitative immunoelectrophoresis for the presence of foetal brain antigens and tumour-associated antigens, and levels of 2 normal brain-specific proteins were also determined. The following antibodies were used: monospecific anti-S-100 (glia specific); monospecific anti-GFA (glial fibrillary acidic protein), (astroglia specific); polyspecific anti-foetal brain (12-16th week of gestation); a polyspecific anti-glioblastoma antiserum, absorbed with insolubilized serum, haemolysate and normal brain extract; polyspecific anti-alpha-foetoprotein; and monospecific anti-ferritin. Using the antibodies raised against the tumours, several antigens not present in foetal or adult normal brain were found in the glioblastomas and the meningiomas. These antigens cross-reacted with antigens present in normal liver and were therefore not tumour-associated. S-100 was found in glioblastomas in approximately one tenth the amount in whole brain homogenate, whereas GFA was found 2-4 times enriched. The 2 proteins were absent in meningiomas. The possible use of the GFA protein as a marker for astroglial neoplasia is discussed. Five foetal antigens were found in foetal brain, but none in the tumours. alpha-Foetoprotein could only be demonstrated in foetal tissue extracts, including foetal brain, but not in tumours. Ferritin was detected in all tumour extracts, although the amounts determined were unrelated to histological tumour type
The Influence of Quadrature Errors on Isogeometric Mortar Methods
Mortar methods have recently been shown to be well suited for isogeometric
analysis. We review the recent mathematical analysis and then investigate the
variational crime introduced by quadrature formulas for the coupling integrals.
Motivated by finite element observations, we consider a quadrature rule purely
based on the slave mesh as well as a method using quadrature rules based on the
slave mesh and on the master mesh, resulting in a non-symmetric saddle point
problem. While in the first case reduced convergence rates can be observed, in
the second case the influence of the variational crime is less significant
Polarized Line Formation in Multi-Dimensional Media.III. Hanle Effect with Partial Frequency Redistribution
In the previous two papers, namely, \citet{anuknn11} and \citet{anuetal11} we
solved the polarized radiative transfer (RT) equation in multi-dimensional
(multi-D) geometries, with partial frequency redistribution (PRD) as the
scattering mechanism. We assumed Rayleigh scattering as the only source of
linear polarization () in both these papers. In this paper we extend
these previous works to include the effect of weak oriented magnetic fields
(Hanle effect) on line scattering. We generalize the technique of Stokes vector
decomposition in terms of the irreducible spherical tensors ,
developed in \citet{anuknn11}, to the case of RT with Hanle effect. A fast
iterative method of solution (based on the Stabilized Preconditioned
Bi-Conjugate-Gradient technique), developed in \citet{anuetal11}, is now
generalized to the case of RT in magnetized three-dimensional media. We use the
efficient short-characteristics formal solution method for multi-D media,
generalized appropriately to the present context. The main results of this
paper are the following: (1) A comparison of emergent profiles
formed in one-dimensional (1D) media, with the corresponding emergent,
spatially averaged profiles formed in multi-D media, shows that in the
spatially resolved structures, the assumption of 1D may lead to large errors in
linear polarization, especially in the line wings. (2) The multi-D RT in
semi-infinite non-magnetic media causes a strong spatial variation of the
emergent profiles, which is more pronounced in the line wings. (3)
The presence of a weak magnetic field modifies the spatial variation of the
emergent profiles in the line core, by producing significant

Evolutionary patterns of morphometrics, allozymes and mitochondrial DNA in thrashers (Genus Toxostoma)
We examined patterns of variation in skeletal morphometrics (29 characters), allozymes (34 loci), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction sites (n = 74) and fragments (n = 395), and mtDNA sequences (1,739 bp from cytochrome b, ND2, ND6, and the control region) among all species of Toxostoma. The phenetic pattern of variation in skeletal morphometrics generally matched traditional taxonomic groupings (based on plumage patterns) with the exceptions of T. redivivum, which because of its large size clusters outside of its proper evolutionary group (lecontei), and T. occelatum, which did not cluster with T. curvirostre. Skull characters contributed highly to species discrimination, suggesting that unique feeding adaptations arose in different species groups. Although genetic variation was detected at isozyme loci (average heterozygosity = 3.6%), these data yielded little phylogenetic resolution. Similarly, mtDNA restriction sites were relatively uninformative; hence, phylogenetic conclusions were based on sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed the monophyly of these traditionally recognized assemblages: rufum group (T. rufum, T. longirostre, and T. guttatum), lecontei group (T. lecontei, T. crissale, and T. redivivum), and cinereum group (T. bendirei and T. cinereum). The cinereum and lecontei groups appear to be sister lineages. Monophyly of the curvirostre group (which also includes T. occelatum) was not confirmed. Sequence data suggest that T. occelatum and T. curvirostre, which differ by 7.7% sequence divergence, are probably most closely related to the rufum group. Toxostoma rufum and T. longirostre have similar external appearances and differ by 5.0%. Toxostoma guttatum is restricted to Cozumel Island and often is considered a subspecies of T. longirostre; it differs by more than 5% from the other two members of the rufum group and is a distinct species constituting the basal member of this group. The phenotypically distinctive T. bendirei and T. cinereum differ in sequence divergence by only 1.6%. Overall, mtDNA distances computed from coding genes (mean 8.5%) exceeded distances computed from the control region (mean 7.6%), contrary to expectation. Because neither allozymes nor mtDNA could unambiguously resolve the placement of T. occelatum and T. curvirostre, a scenario involving contemporaneous speciation is suggested. Application of a molecular clock suggested that most speciation occurred in the late Pliocene or early Pleistocene
Bures volume of the set of mixed quantum states
We compute the volume of the N^2-1 dimensional set M_N of density matrices of
size N with respect to the Bures measure and show that it is equal to that of a
N^2-1 dimensional hyper-halfsphere of radius 1/2. For N=2 we obtain the volume
of the Uhlmann 3-D hemisphere, embedded in R^4. We find also the area of the
boundary of the set M_N and obtain analogous results for the smaller set of all
real density matrices. An explicit formula for the Bures-Hall normalization

Two-Qubit Separability Probabilities and Beta Functions
Due to recent important work of Zyczkowski and Sommers (quant-ph/0302197 and
quant-ph/0304041), exact formulas are available (both in terms of the
Hilbert-Schmidt and Bures metrics) for the (n^2-1)-dimensional and
(n(n-1)/2-1)-dimensional volumes of the complex and real n x n density
matrices. However, no comparable formulas are available for the volumes (and,
hence, probabilities) of various separable subsets of them. We seek to clarify
this situation for the Hilbert-Schmidt metric for the simplest possible case of
n=4, that is, the two-qubit systems. Making use of the density matrix (rho)
parameterization of Bloore (J. Phys. A 9, 2059 [1976]), we are able to reduce
each of the real and complex volume problems to the calculation of a
one-dimensional integral, the single relevant variable being a certain ratio of
diagonal entries, nu = (rho_{11} rho_{44})/{rho_{22} rho_{33})$. The associated
integrand in each case is the product of a known (highly oscillatory near nu=1)
jacobian and a certain unknown univariate function, which our extensive
numerical (quasi-Monte Carlo) computations indicate is very closely
proportional to an (incomplete) beta function B_{nu}(a,b), with a=1/2,
b=sqrt{3}in the real case, and a=2 sqrt{6}/5, b =3/sqrt{2} in the complex case.
Assuming the full applicability of these specific incomplete beta functions, we
