The effects of non-abelian statistics on two-terminal shot noise in a quantum Hall liquid in the Pfaffian state
We study non-equilibrium noise in the tunnelling current between the edges of
a quantum Hall liquid in the Pfaffian state, which is a strong candidate for
the plateau at . To first non-vanishing order in perturbation theory
(in the tunneling amplitude) we find that one can extract the value of the
fractional charge of the tunnelling quasiparticles. We note however that no
direct information about non-abelian statistics can be retrieved at this level.
If we go to higher-order in the perturbative calculation of the non-equilibrium
shot noise, we find effects due to non-Abelian statistics. They are subtle, but
eventually may have an experimental signature on the frequency dependent shot
noise. We suggest how multi-terminal noise measurements might yield a more
dramatic signature of non-Abelian statistics and develop some of the relevant

Glucose-Coated Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared by Metal Vapour Synthesis Are Electively Internalized in a Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Cell Line Expressing GLUT1 Transporter
Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) can have a variety of biomedical applications due to their visualization properties through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and heating with radio frequency or alternating magnetic fields. In the oncological field, coating IONP with organic compounds to provide specific features and to achieve the ability of binding specific molecular targets appears to be very promising. To take advantage of the high avidity of tumor cells for glucose, we report the development of very small glucose-coated IONP (glc-IONP) by employing an innovative technique, Metal Vapor Synthesis (MVS). Moreover, we tested the internalization of our gl-IONP on a tumor line, BxPC3, over-expressing GLUT 1 transporter. Both glc-IONP and polyvinylpyrrolidone-IONP (PVP-IONP), as control, were prepared with MVS and were tested on BxPC3 at various concentrations. To evaluate the role of GLUT-1 transporter, we also investigated the effect of adding a polyclonal anti-GLUT1 antibody. After proper treatment, the iron value was assessed by atomic absorption spectrometer, reported in mcg/L and expressed in mg of protein. Our IONP prepared with MVS were very small and homogeneously distributed in a narrow range (1.75-3.75 nm) with an average size of 2.7 nm and were super-paramagnetic. Glc-IONP were internalized by BxPC3 cells in a larger amount than PVP-IONP. After 6h of treatment with 50 mcg/mL of IONPs, the content of Fe was 1.5 times higher in glc-IONP-treated cells compared with PVP-IONP-treated cells. After 1h pre-treatment with anti-GLUT1, a reduction of 41% cellular accumulation of glc-IONP was observed. Conversely, the uptake of PVP-IONPs was reduced only by 14% with antibody pretreatment. In conclusion, MVS allowed us to prepare small, homogeneous, super-paramagnetic glc-IONP, which are electively internalized by a tumor line over-expressing GLUT1. Pine Pitch Canker and Insects: Relationships and Implications for Disease Spread in Europe
Producción CientíficaThe fungal pathogen Fusarium circinatum (Nirenberg and O’ Donnell) is the causal agent
of pine pitch canker (PPC) disease, which seriously affects conifer species in forests and nurseries
worldwide. In Europe, PPC is only established in the Iberian Peninsula; however, it is presumed that its
range could expand through the continent in the near future. Infection caused by this fungus requires
open wounds on the tree, including physical damage caused by insects. Therefore, a relationship
probably occurs between PPC and a wide variety of insects. The aim of this review is to outline the
taxonomic and ecological diversity of insect species with high potential association with F. circinatum
in Europe and elsewhere. The insects were classified as vectors, carriers and wounding agents
according to the association level with the PPC disease. In addition, we discuss the insect-mediated
spreading of PPC disease in relation to the different phases of forest stand development, from seeds
and seedlings in nurseries to mature stands. Lastly, to improve our predictive capacities and to
design appropriate intervention measures and strategies for controlling disease dissemination by

Bone demineralization and vertebral fractures in endogenous cortisol excess: role of disease etiology and gonadal status
INTRODUCTION: The effects of endogenous cortisol (F) excess on bone mass and vertebral fractures have still not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this cross-sectional case-control study was to investigate factors influencing bone demineralization and vertebral fractures in different conditions of F excess, i.e. Cushing's disease and adrenal and ectopic Cushing's syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients and 80 controls were prospectively enrolled: 37 patients (21 females) with pituitary ACTH-secreting adenoma, 18 (14 females) with adrenocortical adenoma, 15 (11 females) with adrenal carcinoma of mixed secretion, and 10 (three females) with ectopic ACTH secretion. The groups had similar age. At diagnosis, bone mineral density (BMD) was determined by the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry technique at the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and femoral neck; vertebral fractures were investigated by standard spinal radiographs. RESULTS: When comparing the groups with different etiology of F excess, the patients with ectopic ACTH secretion had higher F and lower BMD values than the other subgroups. Morning F (P = 0.03) and testosterone levels (P = 0.04) correlated with lumbar BMD. Vertebral fractures were found in 61 (76%) of the patients, were multiple in 52 (85%) of the cases, and clinically evident in 32 (52%). Only multiple fractures were more frequent in patients with ectopic ACTH hypersecretion (P < 0.05). Lumbar spine BMD was the best predictor of vertebral fractures (P < 0.01). Surprisingly, amenorrheic and eumenorrheic women had similar BMD values and fracture prevalence. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence (76%) of vertebral fracture was revealed, regardless of the etiology of the patients' hypercortisolism. The harmful effects of F excess at the spine were partly counterbalanced by the increased androgen production but were not affected by gonadal status in women

We evaluated associations of high levels of urinary total polyphenols (UTP), aproxy measure of polyphenol intake, with longitudinal changes of bone properties in a representative cohort of free-livingparticipants of the InCHIANTI study.MethodsThe InCHIANTI study enrolled representative samples from the registry list of two towns in Tuscany, Italy. Baselinedata were collected in 1998 and follow-up visits in 2001 and 2004. Of the 1453 participants enrolled, 956 consented to donate a24-h urine sample used to assess UTP, had dietary assessment, a physical examination, and underwent a quantitative comput-erized tomography (pQCT) of the tibia. From pQCT images, we estimated markers of bone mass (BM), diaphyseal design (DD),and material quality (MQ). Mixed models were used to study the relationship between baseline tertiles of UTP with changes ofthe bone characteristics over the follow-up.ResultsAt baseline, higher levels of UTP were positively correlated with markers of BM, DD, and MQ. Compared with lowertertile of UTP, participants in the intermediate and highest tertiles had higher cortical bone area, cortical mineral content, andcortical thickness. However, participants in the intermediate and highest UTP tertiles experienced accelerated deterioration ofthese same parameters over the follow-up compared with those in the lowest UTP tertile.ConclusionsDietary intake of polyphenols estimated by UTP and dietary questionnaire was associated with long-term acceler-ated deterioration of bone health. Our study does not support the recommendation of increasing polyphenol intake for osteopo-rosis prevention
Telomere Length Variation in Juvenile Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) provides a potential marker of biological age, closely related to the endothelial dysfunction and consequently to the atherosclerotic process. To investigate the relationship between the LTL and the risk of premature acute myocardial infarction and to evaluate the predictive value of LTL on the onset of major cardiovascular events, 199 patients from 18 to 48 years old with first diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction were enrolled and were matched with 190 controls for sex and age (± 1 year). Clinical data and coronary artery disease were evaluated at enrollment and at follow up. LTL was measured at enrollment using a quantitative PCR-based method. No significant differences were observed in LTL between cases and controls (p = 0.20) and with the presence of coronary artery disease in patients (p = 0.47). Hypercholesterolemic cases presented LTL significantly longer than cases without hypercholesterolemia (t/s: 0.82 ± 0.16 p = 0.79 and t/s norm: 0.79 ± 0.19 p = 0.01), as confirmed in multivariate regression analysis (p = 0.005, β = 0.09). Furthermore, multivariate regression analysis showed LTL significantly shorter in hypertensive cases than in normotensive cases (p = 0.04, β = -0.07). One hundred seventy-one cases (86%) ended the average follow up of 9 ± 5 years, 92 (54%) presented a major cardiovascular event. At multivariate regression analysis the LTL detected at enrollment did not represent a predictive factor of major cardiovascular events nor it significantly impacted with cumulative events. Based on present cohort of young Italian patients, the LTL did not represent a marker of acute myocardial infarction nor had a predictive role at medium term follow up
