    Gut microbiota targeted approach in the management of chronic liver diseases

    The liver is directly connected to the intestines through the portal vein, which enables the gut microbiota and gut-derived products to influence liver health. There is accumulating evidence of decreased gut flora diversity and alcohol sensitivity in patients with various chronic liver diseases, including non-alcoholic/alcoholic liver disease, chronic hepatitis virus infection, primary sclerosing cholangitis and liver cirrhosis. Increased intestinal mucosal permeability and decline in barrier function were also found in these patients. Followed by bacteria translocation and endotoxin uptake, these will lead to systemic inflammation. Specific microbiota and microbiota-derived metabolites are altered in various chronic liver diseases studies, but the complex interaction between the gut microbiota and liver is missing. This review article discussed the bidirectional relationship between the gut and the liver, and explained the mechanisms of how the gut microbiota ecosystem alteration affects the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases. We presented gut-microbiota targeted interventions that could be the new promising method to manage chronic liver diseases

    Multicolour Optical Variability Monitoring of Blazars with High Time Resolution

    We carried out a high time-resolution, multicolour optical observing campaign for eight γ\gamma-ray detected blazars during 2010-2020. We analyze flux variations, correlations between magnitudes and colours on different timescales. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected in all eight sources of our sample. A bluer-when-brighter (BWB) chromatic trend is dominant on intraday timescales. On the short timescales, the BWB trend only shows up in ON 231, 3C 279, BL Lacertae and 1E 1458.8+2249. There is a BWB trend in 3C 279 on the long timescale. We estimate the upper limits of black hole mass for three blazars (i.e. ON 321, 1ES 1426+42.8, PKS 1510-089) using variability timescales. On April 13, 2010 a potential quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with the period of P=48.67±13.90P=48.67\pm13.90 minutes is found in 1ES 1426+42.8. The light curve on March 16, 2021 further shows the existence of the QPO phenomenon. The QPO in this target deserves further observation and confirmation.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted in MNRA

    Rendezvous on a Line by Location-Aware Robots Despite the Presence of Byzantine Faults

    A set of mobile robots is placed at points of an infinite line. The robots are equipped with GPS devices and they may communicate their positions on the line to a central authority. The collection contains an unknown subset of "spies", i.e., byzantine robots, which are indistinguishable from the non-faulty ones. The set of the non-faulty robots need to rendezvous in the shortest possible time in order to perform some task, while the byzantine robots may try to delay their rendezvous for as long as possible. The problem facing a central authority is to determine trajectories for all robots so as to minimize the time until the non-faulty robots have rendezvoused. The trajectories must be determined without knowledge of which robots are faulty. Our goal is to minimize the competitive ratio between the time required to achieve the first rendezvous of the non-faulty robots and the time required for such a rendezvous to occur under the assumption that the faulty robots are known at the start. We provide a bounded competitive ratio algorithm, where the central authority is informed only of the set of initial robot positions, without knowing which ones or how many of them are faulty. When an upper bound on the number of byzantine robots is known to the central authority, we provide algorithms with better competitive ratios. In some instances we are able to show these algorithms are optimal

    Theory of structural response to macroscopic electric fields in ferroelectric systems

    We have developed and implemented a formalism for computing the structural response of a periodic insulating system to a homogeneous static electric field within density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT). We consider the thermodynamic potentials E(R,eta,e) and F(R,eta,e) whose minimization with respect to the internal structural parameters R and unit cell strain eta yields the equilibrium structure at fixed electric field e and polarization P, respectively. First-order expansion of E(R,eta,e) in e leads to a useful approximation in which R(P) and eta(P) can be obtained by simply minimizing the zero-field internal energy with respect to structural coordinates subject to the constraint of a fixed spontaneous polarization P. To facilitate this minimization, we formulate a modified DFPT scheme such that the computed derivatives of the polarization are consistent with the discretized form of the Berry-phase expression. We then describe the application of this approach to several problems associated with bulk and short-period superlattice structures of ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO3 and PbTiO3. These include the effects of compositionally broken inversion symmetry, the equilibrium structure for high values of polarization, field-induced structural phase transitions, and the lattice contributions to the linear and the non-linear dielectric constants.Comment: 19 pages, with 15 postscript figures embedded.     Bacterial microevolution and the Pangenome

    The comparison of multiple genome sequences sampled from a bacterial population reveals considerable diversity in both the core and the accessory parts of the pangenome. This diversity can be analysed in terms of microevolutionary events that took place since the genomes shared a common ancestor, especially deletion, duplication, and recombination. We review the basic modelling ingredients used implicitly or explicitly when performing such a pangenome analysis. In particular, we describe a basic neutral phylogenetic framework of bacterial pangenome microevolution, which is not incompatible with evaluating the role of natural selection. We survey the different ways in which pangenome data is summarised in order to be included in microevolutionary models, as well as the main methodological approaches that have been proposed to reconstruct pangenome microevolutionary history

    The Growth of Black Holes and Their Host Spheroids in (Sub)mm-loud QSOs at High Redshift

    We study the growth of black holes and stellar population in spheroids at high redshift using several (sub)mm-loud QSO samples. Applying the same criteria established in an earlier work, we find that, similar to IR QSOs at low redshift, the far-infrared emission of these (sub)mm-loud QSOs mainly originates from dust heated by starbursts. By combining low-z IR QSOs and high-z (sub)mm-loud QSOs, we find a trend that the star formation rate (\Mstardot) increases with the accretion rate (\Mdot). We compare the values of \Mstardot/\Mdot for submm emitting galaxies (SMGs), far-infrared ultraluminous/hyperluminous QSOs and typical QSOs, and construct a likely evolution scenario for these objects. The (sub)mm-loud QSO transition phase has both high \Mdot and \Mstardot and hence is important for establishing the correlation between the masses of black holes and spheroids.Comment: 19 pages,3 figures,submitted to Chin.     Anomalous enhancement of tetragonality in PbTiO3 induced by negative pressure

    Using a first-principles approach based on density-functional theory, we find that a large tetragonal strain can be induced in PbTiO3 by application of a negative hydrostatic pressure. The structural parameters and the dielectric and dynamical properties are found to change abruptly near a crossover pressure, displaying a ``kinky'' behavior suggestive of proximity to a phase transition. Analogous calculations for BaTiO3 show that the same effect is also present there, but at much higher negative pressure. We investigate this unexpected behavior of PbTiO3 and discuss an interpretation involving a phenomenological description in terms of a reduced set of relevant degrees of freedom.Comment: 9 pages, with 9 postscript figures embedded.     Assessing the representation of species included within the Canadian Living Planet Index

    To effectively combat the biodiversity crisis, we need ambitious targets and reliable indicators to accurately track trends and measure conservation impact. In Canada, the Living Planet Index (LPI) has been adapted to produce a national indicator by both World Wildlife Fund-Canada (Canadian Living Planet Index; C-LPI) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (Canadian Species Index) to provide insight into the status of Canadian wildlife, by evaluating temporal trends in vertebrate population abundance. The indicator includes data for just over 50% of Canadian vertebrate species. To assess whether the current dataset is representative of the distribution of life history characteristics of Canadian wildlife, we analyzed the representation of species-specific biotic variables (i.e., body size, trophic level, lifespan) for vertebrates within the C-LPI compared to native vertebrates lacking LPI data. Generally, there was considerable overlap in the distribution of biotic variables for species in the C-LPI compared to native Canadian vertebrate species lacking LPI data. Nevertheless, some differences among distributions were found, driven in large part by discrepancy in the representation of fishes—where the C-LPI included larger-bodied and longer-lived species. We provide recommendations for targeted data collection and additional analyses to further strengthen the applicability, accuracy, and representativity of biodiversity indicators
