Stability analysis of networked control systems using a switched linear systems approach.
Abstract. In this paper, we study the stability of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) that are subject to time-varying transmission intervals and communication constraints in the sense that, per transmission, only one node can access the network and send its information. The order in which nodes send their information is dictated by a network protocol, such as the well-known Round Robin (RR) or Try-Once-Discard (TOD) protocol. Focussing on linear plants and linear continuous-time or discrete-time controllers, we model the NCS with time-varying transmission intervals as a discrete-time switched linear uncertain system. We obtain bounds for the allowable range of transmission intervals in terms of both minimal and maximal allowable transmission intervals. Hereto, a new convex overapproximation of the uncertain switched system is proposed, using a polytopic system with norm-bounded uncertainty, and new stability results for this class of hybrid systems are developed. On the benchmark example of a batch reactor, we explicitly exploit the linearity of the system, leading to a significant reduction in conservatism with respect to the existing approaches
Frequent expression loss of Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain (ITIH) genes in multiple human solid tumors: A systematic expression analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitors (ITI) are a family of plasma protease inhibitors, assembled from a light chain – bikunin, encoded by <it>AMBP </it>– and five homologous heavy chains (encoded by <it>ITIH1</it>, <it>ITIH2</it>, <it>ITIH3</it>, <it>ITIH4</it>, and <it>ITIH5</it>), contributing to extracellular matrix stability by covalent linkage to hyaluronan. So far, ITIH molecules have been shown to play a particularly important role in inflammation and carcinogenesis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We systematically investigated differential gene expression of the <it>ITIH </it>gene family, as well as <it>AMBP </it>and the interacting partner <it>TNFAIP6 </it>in 13 different human tumor entities (of breast, endometrium, ovary, cervix, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, lung, thyroid, prostate, kidney, and pancreas) using cDNA dot blot analysis (Cancer Profiling Array, CPA), semiquantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that <it>ITIH </it>genes are clearly downregulated in multiple human solid tumors, including breast, colon and lung cancer. Thus, <it>ITIH </it>genes may represent a family of putative tumor suppressor genes that should be analyzed in greater detail in the future. For an initial detailed analysis we chose <it>ITIH2 </it>expression in human breast cancer. Loss of <it>ITIH2 </it>expression in 70% of cases (n = 50, CPA) could be confirmed by real-time PCR in an additional set of breast cancers (n = 36). Next we studied ITIH2 expression on the protein level by analyzing a comprehensive tissue micro array including 185 invasive breast cancer specimens. We found a strong correlation (p < 0.001) between ITIH2 expression and estrogen receptor (ER) expression indicating that ER may be involved in the regulation of this ECM molecule.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Altogether, this is the first systematic analysis on the differential expression of <it>ITIH </it>genes in human cancer, showing frequent downregulation that may be associated with initiation and/or progression of these malignancies.</p
Binary Willshaw learning yields high synaptic capacity for long-term familiarity memory
We investigate from a computational perspective the efficiency of the
Willshaw synaptic update rule in the context of familiarity discrimination, a
binary-answer, memory-related task that has been linked through psychophysical
experiments with modified neural activity patterns in the prefrontal and
perirhinal cortex regions. Our motivation for recovering this well-known
learning prescription is two-fold: first, the switch-like nature of the induced
synaptic bonds, as there is evidence that biological synaptic transitions might
occur in a discrete stepwise fashion. Second, the possibility that in the
mammalian brain, unused, silent synapses might be pruned in the long-term.
Besides the usual pattern and network capacities, we calculate the synaptic
capacity of the model, a recently proposed measure where only the functional
subset of synapses is taken into account. We find that in terms of network
capacity, Willshaw learning is strongly affected by the pattern coding rates,
which have to be kept fixed and very low at any time to achieve a non-zero
capacity in the large network limit. The information carried per functional
synapse, however, diverges and is comparable to that of the pattern association
case, even for more realistic moderately low activity levels that are a

Real-time model-based plasma state estimation, monitoring and integrated control in TCV, ASDEX-Upgrade and ITER
To maintain a high-performance, long-duration tokamak plasma scenario, it is necessary to maintain desired profiles while respecting operational limits. This requires real-time estimation of the profiles, monitoring of their evolution with respect to predictions and known limits, and their active control to remain within the desired envelope. Model-based techniques are particularly suitable to tackle such problems due to the nonlinear nature of the processes and the tight coupling among the various physical variables. A suite of physics-based, control-oriented models for the core plasma proles in a tokamak is presented, with models formulated in such a way that powerful methods from the systems and control engineering community can be leveraged to design ancient algorithms. We report on new development and applications of these models for real-time reconstruction, monitoring and integrated control of plasma proles on TCV, ASDEX-Upgrade and simulations for ITER
