    eLISA Telescope In-field Pointing and Scattered Light Study

    The orbital motion of the three spacecraft that make up the eLISA Observatory constellation causes long-arm line of sight variations of approximately one degree over the course of a year. The baseline solution is to package the telescope, the optical bench, and the gravitational reference sensor (GRS) into an optical assembly at each end of the measurement arm, and then to articulate the assembly. An optical phase reference is exchanged between the moving optical benches with a single mode optical fiber (backlink fiber). An alternative solution, referred to as in-field pointing, embeds a steering mirror into the optical design, fixing the optical benches and eliminating the backlink fiber, but requiring the additional complication of a two-stage optical design for the telescope.     Validity of the Polar V800 heart rate monitor to measure RR intervals at rest

    Purpose To assess the validity of RR intervals and short-term heart rate variability (HRV) data obtained from the Polar V800 heart rate monitor, in comparison to an electrocardiograph (ECG). Method Twenty participants completed an active orthostatic test using the V800 and ECG. An improved method for the identification and correction of RR intervals was employed prior to HRV analysis. Agreement of the data was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), Bland–Altman limits of agreement (LoA), and effect size (ES). Results A small number of errors were detected between ECG and Polar RR signal, with a combined error rate of 0.086 %. The RR intervals from ECG to V800 were significantly different, but with small ES for both supine corrected and standing corrected data (ES 0.999 for both supine and standing corrected intervals. When analysed with the same HRV software no significant differences were observed in any HRV parameters, for either supine or standing; the data displayed small bias and tight LoA, strong ICC (>0.99) and small ES (≤0.029). Conclusions The V800 improves over previous Polar models, with narrower LoA, stronger ICC and smaller ES for both the RR intervals and HRV parameters. The findings support the validity of the Polar V800 and its ability to produce RR interval recordings consistent with an ECG. In addition, HRV parameters derived from these recordings are also highly comparable

    Nicotinamide mononucleotide supplementation reverses vascular dysfunction and oxidative stress with aging in mice

    We tested the hypothesis that supplementation of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a key NAD (+) intermediate, increases arterial SIRT1 activity and reverses age‐associated arterial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Old control mice (OC) had impaired carotid artery endothelium‐dependent dilation (EDD) (60 ± 5% vs. 84 ± 2%), a measure of endothelial function, and nitric oxide (NO)‐mediated EDD (37 ± 4% vs. 66 ± 6%), compared with young mice (YC). This age‐associated impairment in EDD was restored in OC by the superoxide ([Formula: see text]) scavenger TEMPOL (82 ± 7%). OC also had increased aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV, 464 ± 31 cm s(−1) vs. 337 ± 3 cm s(−1)) and elastic modulus (EM, 6407 ± 876 kPa vs. 3119 ± 471 kPa), measures of large elastic artery stiffness, compared with YC. OC had greater aortic [Formula: see text] production (2.0 ± 0.1 vs. 1.0 ± 0.1 AU), nitrotyrosine abundance (a marker of oxidative stress), and collagen‐I, and reduced elastin and vascular SIRT1 activity, measured by the acetylation status of the p65 subunit of NFκB, compared with YC. Supplementation with NMN in old mice restored EDD (86 ± 2%) and NO‐mediated EDD (61 ± 5%), reduced aPWV (359 ± 14 cm s(−1)) and EM (3694 ± 315 kPa), normalized [Formula: see text] production (0.9 ± 0.1 AU), decreased nitrotyrosine, reversed collagen‐I, increased elastin, and restored vascular SIRT1 activity. Acute NMN incubation in isolated aortas increased NAD (+) threefold and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) by 50%. NMN supplementation may represent a novel therapy to restore SIRT1 activity and reverse age‐related arterial dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress

    Forward-Backward Multiplicity Correlations in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Gold-Gold Collisions

    Forward-backward correlations of charged-particle multiplicities in symmetric bins in pseudorapidity are studied in order to gain insight into the underlying correlation structure of particle production in Au+Au collisions. The PHOBOS detector is used to measure integrated multiplicities in bins centered at eta, defined within |eta|<3, and covering intervals Delta-eta. The variance sigma^2_C of a suitably defined forward-backward asymmetry variable C is calculated as a function of eta, Delta-eta, and centrality. It is found to be sensitive to short range correlations, and the concept of "clustering'' is used to interpret comparisons to phenomenological models.Comment: 5 Pages, 5 Figures, submitted to Physical Review C -- Rapid Communication

    The development of highly fluent large language models (LLMs) has prompted increased interest in assessing their reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. We investigate whether several LLMs can solve a classic type of deductive reasoning problem from the cognitive science literature. The tested LLMs have limited abilities to solve these problems in their conventional form. We performed follow up experiments to investigate if changes to the presentation format and content improve model performance. We do find performance differences between conditions; however, they do not improve overall performance. Moreover, we find that performance interacts with presentation format and content in unexpected ways that differ from human performance. Overall, our results suggest that LLMs have unique reasoning biases that are only partially predicted from human reasoning performance.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, under revie

    Expanding the Set of Pragmatic Considerations in Conversational AI

    Despite considerable performance improvements, current conversational AI systems often fail to meet user expectations. We discuss several pragmatic limitations of current conversational AI systems. We illustrate pragmatic limitations with examples that are syntactically appropriate, but have clear pragmatic deficiencies. We label our complaints as "Turing Test Triggers" (TTTs) as they indicate where current conversational AI systems fall short compared to human behavior.     System Size, Energy, Pseudorapidity, and Centrality Dependence of Elliptic Flow

    This paper presents measurements of the elliptic flow of charged particles as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality from Cu-Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elliptic flow in Cu-Cu collisions is found to be significant even for the most central events. For comparison with the Au-Au results, it is found that the detailed way in which the collision geometry (eccentricity) is estimated is of critical importance when scaling out system-size effects. A new form of eccentricity, called the participant eccentricity, is introduced which yields a scaled elliptic flow in the Cu-Cu system that has the same relative magnitude and qualitative features as that in the Au-Au system
