Creating a Comprehensive Review of the Literature

Research normally begins by doing a “review of the literature” to see what has already been written and to determine “gaps” in the literature for further research. The Apollo 17 regolith

Among Apollo landing sites, Apollo 17 provides the best opportunity to study the efficiency of formation and evolution of regolith by impacts, both large and small. The mare-highlands interface is crucial to this endeavor, but the Light Mantle avalanche and presence of fine-grained pyroclastics offer additional constraints. Compositional variation among soils from different locations and depths provides a means to quantify the extent of mixing by larger impacts. Because of their variety and complex history, Apollo 17 soils have been important in establishing agglutinate abundance, mean grain size, and abundance of fine-grained iron metal (as measured by (I(sub s)/FeO)) as simple index of maturity (relative extent of reworking by micrometeorite impact at the surface). The use of graphics in the design of the human-telerobot interface

The Man-Systems Telerobotics Laboratory (MSTL) of NASA's Johnson Space Center employs computer graphics tools in their design and evaluation of the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) human/telerobot interface on the Shuttle and on the Space Station. It has been determined by the MSTL that the use of computer graphics can promote more expedient and less costly design endeavors. Several specific examples of computer graphics applied to the FTS user interface by the MSTL are described

Small-scale alcohol plants will have difficulty in supplying fuel that is competitive in cost with petroleum-based fuels. This is based upon economic findings form interdisciplinary research with a pilot fuel alcohol plant. Results of economic-engineering cost analyses and of fuel and feed byproduct returns analyses are shown. The brain's default network: origins and implications for the study of psychosis

The brain's default network is a set of regions that is spontaneously active during passive moments. The network is also active during directed tasks that require participants to remember past events or imagine upcoming events. One hypothesis is that the network facilitates construction of mental models (simulations) that can be used adaptively in many contexts. Extensive research has considered whether disruption of the default network may contribute to disease. While an intriguing possibility, a specific challenge to this notion is the fact that it is difficult to accurately measure the default network in patients where confounds of head motion and compliance are prominent. Nonetheless, some intriguing recent findings suggest that dysfunctional interactions between front-oparietal control systems and the default network contribute to psychosis. Psychosis may be a network disturbance that manifests as disordered thought partly because it disrupts the fragile balance between the default network and competing brain systems
