Genetic variation in CRHR1 is associated with short-term respiratory response to corticosteroids in preterm infants at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
BackgroundBronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is an orphan disease and advances in prevention and treatment are lacking. The clinical efficacy of systemic corticosteroid therapy to reduce the severity of lung disease and BPD is highly variable. Our objective was to assess whether candidate SNPs in corticosteroid metabolism and response genes are associated with short-term phenotypic response to systemic corticosteroids in infants at high risk for BPD.MethodsPharmacogenetic analysis of data from a large randomized controlled trial (TOLSURF) in infants treated with dexamethasone or hydrocortisone using multivariate linear regression. The primary outcome was a change in respiratory severity score (RSS, mean airway pressure x FiO2) at day 7 of corticosteroid treatment.Resultsrs7225082 in the intron of CRHR1 is significantly associated with the magnitude of decrease in RSS 7 days after starting treatment with systemic corticosteroid (meta-analysis Pâ=â2.8âĂâ10-4). Each T allele at rs7225082 is associated with a smaller absolute change in RSS at day 7, i.e., less response to systemic corticosteroids.ConclusionsGenetic variability is associated with corticosteroid responsiveness with regard to respiratory status in preterm infants. Identification of genetic markers of corticosteroid responsiveness may allow for therapeutic individualization, with the goal of optimizing the risk-to-benefit ratio for an individual child
Large scale correlations in galaxy clustering from the Two degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey
We study galaxy correlations from samples extracted from the 2dFGRS final
release. Statistical properties are characterized by studying the nearest
neighbor probability density, the conditional density and the reduced two-point
correlation function. The result is that the conditional density has a
power-law behavior in redshift space described by an exponent \gamma=0.8 \pm
0.2 in the interval from about 1 Mpc/h, the average distance between nearest
galaxies, up to about 40 Mpc/h, corresponding to radius of the largest sphere
contained in the samples. These results are consistent with other studies of
the conditional density and are useful to clarify the subtle role of
finite-size effects on the determination of the two-point correlation function

A new approach to finding galaxy groups using Markov Clustering
We present a proof of concept of a new galaxy group finder method, Markov graph CLustering (MCL) that naturally handles probabilistic linking criteria. We introduce a new figure of merit, the variation of information (VI) statistic, used to optimize the free parameter(s) of the MCL algorithm. We explain that the common friends-of-friends (FoF) method is a subset of MCL. We test MCL in real space on a realistic mock galaxy catalogue constructed from an N-body simulation using the galform model. With a fixed linking length FoF produces the best group catalogues as quantified by the VI statistic. By making the linking length sensitive to the local galaxy density, the quality of the FoF and MCL group catalogues improve significantly, with MCL being preferred over FoF due to a smaller VI value. The MCL group catalogue recovers accurately the underlying halo multiplicity function at all multiplicities. MCL provides better and more consistent group purity and halo completeness values at all multiplicities than FoF. As MCL allows for probabilistic pairwise connections, it is a promising algorithm to find galaxy groups in photometric surveys
Cation composition effects on oxide conductivity in the Zr_2Y_2O_7-Y_3NbO_7 system
Realistic, first-principles-based interatomic potentials have been used in
molecular dynamics simulations to study the effect of cation composition on the
ionic conductivity in the Zr2Y2O7-Y3NbO7 system and to link the dynamical
properties to the degree of lattice disorder. Across the composition range,
this system retains a disordered fluorite crystal structure and the vacancy
concentration is constant. The observed trends of decreasing conductivity and
increasing disorder with increasing Nb5+ content were reproduced in simulations
with the cations randomly assigned to positions on the cation sublattice. The
trends were traced to the influences of the cation charges and relative sizes
and their effect on vacancy ordering by carrying out additional calculations in
which, for example, the charges of the cations were equalised. The simulations
did not, however, reproduce all the observed properties, particularly for
Y3NbO7. Its conductivity was significantly overestimated and prominent diffuse
scattering features observed in small area electron diffraction studies were
not always reproduced. Consideration of these deficiencies led to a preliminary
attempt to characterise the consequence of partially ordering the cations on
their lattice, which significantly affects the propensity for vacancy ordering.
The extent and consequences of cation ordering seem to be much less pronounced

Void Statistics in Large Galaxy Redshift Surveys: Does Halo Occupation of Field Galaxies Depend on Environment?
We use measurements of the projected galaxy correlation function w_p and
galaxy void statistics to test whether the galaxy content of halos of fixed
mass is systematically different in low density environments. We present new
measurements of the void probability function (VPF) and underdensity
probability function (UPF) from Data Release Four of the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey, as well as new measurements of the VPF from the full data release of
the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey. We compare these measurements to
predictions calculated from models of the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD)
that are constrained to match both w_p and the space density of galaxies. The
standard implementation of the HOD assumes that galaxy occupation depends on
halo mass only, and is independent of local environment. For luminosity-defined
samples, we find that the standard HOD prediction is a good match to the
observations, and the data exclude models in which galaxy formation efficiency
is reduced in low-density environments. More remarkably, we find that the void
statistics of red and blue galaxies (at L ~ 0.4L_*) are perfectly predicted by
standard HOD models matched to the correlation function of these samples,
ruling out "assembly bias" models in which galaxy color is correlated with
large-scale environment at fixed halo mass. We conclude that the luminosity and
color of field galaxies are determined predominantly by the mass of the halo in
which they reside and have little direct dependence on the environment in which
the host halo formed. In broader terms, our results show that the sizes and
emptiness of voids found in the distribution of L > 0.2L_* galaxies are in
excellent agreement with the predictions of a standard cosmological model with

Observations on the Formation of Massive Stars by Accretion
Observations of the H66a recombination line from the ionized gas in the
cluster of newly formed massive stars, G10.6-0.4, show that most of the
continuum emission derives from the dense gas in an ionized accretion flow that
forms an ionized disk or torus around a group of stars in the center of the
cluster. The inward motion observed in the accretion flow suggests that despite
the equivalent luminosity and ionizing radiation of several O stars, neither
radiation pressure nor thermal pressure has reversed the accretion flow. The
observations indicate why the radiation pressure of the stars and the thermal
pressure of the HII region are not effective in reversing the accretion flow.
The observed rate of the accretion flow, 0.001 solar masses/yr, is sufficient
to form massive stars within the time scale imposed by their short main
sequence lifetimes. A simple model of disk accretion relates quenched HII
regions, trapped hypercompact HII regions, and photo-evaporating disks in an
evolutionary sequence
Failures to disagree are essential for environmental science to effectively influence policy development
While environmental science, and ecology in particular, is working to provide better understanding to base sustainable decisions on, the way scientific understanding is developed can at times be detrimental to this cause. Locked-in debates are often unnecessarily polarised and can compromise any common goals of the opposing camps. The present paper is inspired by a resolved debate from an unrelated field of psychology where Nobel laureate David Kahneman and Garry Klein turned what seemed to be a locked-in debate into a constructive process for their fields. The present paper is also motivated by previous discourses regarding the role of thresholds in natural systems for management and governance, but its scope of analysis targets the scientific process within complex social-ecological systems in general. We identified four features of environmental science that appear to predispose for locked-in debates: (1) The strongly context-dependent behaviour of ecological systems. (2) The dominant role of single hypothesis testing. (3) The high prominence given to theory demonstration compared investigation. (4) The effect of urgent demands to inform and steer policy. This fertile ground is further cultivated by human psychological aspects as well as the structure of funding and publication systems
